This tank does not vent well when filling. A friend added three additional vent holes at the top of the filler tube. There is a thread that tells you how to simply do this.
I am looking to do exactly this but can't find the thread you mention, can you post a link please?

I punched a few holes in the filler neck and it makes filling faster and more than a few drops more into the tank ::008::

Re: Real tank size

Redsoul,

How do you know you nearly ran dry

I know many guys who insist they can only do 100 - 125 miles or something stupid on an @18L-20L tank.

Normally they are not brimming (and the tank is widest at the top on most bikes so that couple of inches they leave can easily be 3-4L their missing out on)

The other thing they tend to do is shit themselves when the light comes on and insist on filling up at the next fuel station at which point they probably still have 3-4 litres left, so in effect they are wasting a good 1/3rd of their range.

I find I can only get about 17L-18L when the light first comes on when brimming right to the top, I also know the bike will easily do another 40 miles at a reasonably brisk pace, or comfortably top 50 miles if you cruise at 60mph or less (I have managed 40 miles at about 80MPH)

Never done a run dry, but others have (had you used the search facility properly you would have known this ::))

I think the best thing if you are that bothered is too do this, although in my mind I am not convinced it helps, if I cock up and are doomed to run out I would probably want to cling to the hope I will make the next fuel stop than know I will conk out exactly 9.65 miles short of where I wanna be.

My respect.

Actually I was stunned on Sunday riding home from PA on the highway and I finally dropped down from 3 to 2 bars at 186 miles. I've never seen that happen before. I told my wife that's a true sign of a boring ride...and it was.

A true indication of the versatility of the S10. Flower sniffing or hooliganism, it can do both, sometimes on the same ride. ::008::

BTW,,,, for those interested in exactly how many gallons one can get into a Tenere's tank,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I found out fer sho yesterday.

I ran it completely out yesterday, barely made it to a station {had to push for maybe 15yrds so lucky there0} and like I said,,,, it was as "out" as you can get without pulling the tank, physically shaking it out and drying it out.

Verdict?????

It held 6.22gals of fuel!

So,,,, juss apply what fuel mileage you normally get to that 6.2 gals and you have an approximate range. I got "caught out" a smidge short because I had recently been getting fairly good fuel mileage numbers "for me" of around 47-48mpg manually figured {computer had me getting around 50-51mpg} and had no issue going 280 miles. This tank averaged a bit over 45mpg so yep, caught out a smidge there.

The numbers manually figured were done so because I've noticed the bike's fuel averages {reset on each tank BTW} are a smidge optimistic by around 5%. Manually figured and as precise as I can be filling up {I basically squeeze every last drop in I can till it simply will not hold any more}, I might get 48mpg but the computer's average might say 50-51mpg. That difference has been pretty consistent and repeatable. If I let the fuel pump shut off automatically and the final fill was inconstant,,,, I could see the discrepancy and I would accept it as my error but like I said, I've been very precise and consistent with my recent fill ups and I'm betting "filled volume" doesn't vary much more than .1 a gallon from fill to fill and .1 a gallon isn't enough to make for an appreciable difference in my numbers,, maybe 1% max and I doubt that.

So, if you take the time to top the take completely off and you are averaging 50mpg per your bike's computer,,,,, you should be safe out to around 280 miles in accounting for slightly different tank volume production differences and slightly different fuel average computations. If you are easy on the throttle and once again, topped off that tank really well, one might could get a safe 300-310 miles. After dat, yer own ya own.

So putting that into meaningful numbers = 23.5L ::008::

Gallons vary around the world, Litres don't - unless you guys spell it wrong  but at least the volumes are the same as well as being how the Japs specify tank sizes.

I am surprised you managed to get in a bit more than the spec, assuming your fuel pumps are accurate - in the UK they are tightly regulated so tend to be very accurate, I am not questioning so much the extra 0.5L, but in my experience of running out of fuel (which is fortunately quite limited) it is not always possible to run the tank completely dry, especially with injected motors which stop the second the fuel is not being fed in at pressure so you cannot wiggle about and keep the bowls topping up like on older bikes.

Makes me feel good knowing it will probably go further than I allow for if need be - I always knock 1L off the claimed tank size when working out max mileages, I get 10-11 miles to a litre most of the time which indicates 230 - 253 if I can use 23L.

Yep, fairly tightly regulated here too. I have pumped 6.1-- gals several times, 6.2--twice and at different fuel stations so I would think it's fairly accurate, say to with-in .1 of a gallon or so over that 6 gallons. I'm somewhat bugged at the fuel computer's apparent error, wouldn't have figured it would be that much but I have to admit,,,, when I see the dash saying I'm averaging 51, 52, 53mph over a tank,,,, I personally call BS as I just not a rider that usually gets good fuel mileage numbers. While I know the bike is capable of those sorta numbers and more, that 47-48mpg is more like it realistically for me and the way I ride.

So... you do know your odometer is off too, right? And the Speedo...

You must be a skinny guy and ride naked. :D I ride loaded up and am a fat bastard, so 42 mpg is more normal for me. Sometimes less when running at the legal 80mph for extended periods. My mpg is with a corrected speedo, but the odo is still off a bit, so like any number on the internet, take it with a grain of salt and what's 'normal' for you is your benchmark.

I have gotten 6.1 US gallons in the tank a few times and 6.2 when I ran it dry, (in 165 miles).

Somehow I've lost some or my data, so I only have 63 data points to tell you that my average distance before getting gas is 195 miles. The shortest is 150 miles when I was going fast and only got 37 mpg. The longest was 232 miles when I got 50.8 mpg when I was touring around on some back roads (my average is 44.4 mpg)...2012 model.
Hojo, you said you only got 150 miles out of a tank averaging 37mpg. You must not have ran it out because that's only just over 4 gallons by my math. At 37mpg you should easily get 180 miles out of a tank.

My fuel light or gauge seems to always come on at about 145-150 miles. I've gone 30 more miles and never been able to put in more than 4.9 gallons. So that leaves .7 gallons still left in the tank. BTW. I've never got over 40mpg's on my bike for an entire tank. 35-37 is average for me and that's riding solo. But I'm a big dude at 6'5 and 270lbs.

I don't know why I get less Meg's on every forum I've ever belonged to. It's the same with trucks. I've owned a few different diesel trucks and pulling trailers I always seem to get about 5mpg's less than the rest of the world gets. I'd like to see how some of these guys getting 280 miles out of a tank on a Tenere do it. Or even 220. I don't think it's even possible on mine and I always run Supreme Unleaded gas.

My last commute to work which is 360 miles each way I has my fuel gauge start counting up at 140 miles. This is straight I-15 freeway miles at 75-85mph. Albeit it is a windy corridor.

I average ~42 MPG and I get the blinking final bar at ~160 miles. Based on y'alls numbers, I should be able to last on the last bar for a loooong time.

With a 5.6 gallon fuel tank at 42mog that's 235 miles thereotically. That's 75 miles once your trip meter starts counting up.

220 is easy, at an indicated 85-90mph with 3 boxes fitted and the Mrs on the back mine still manages 10m/l (not doing gallons as they are different from one place to another) and with 23L should see 230 miles.

Take the Mrs off the back seat and remove the boxes and I get about another 1m/l sticking the range up to 253 in theory.

I have (briefly) cruised at around an indicated 60mph and the mpg on the dash jumps right up, never ran it like this for a whole tank, but I reckon those sorts of speed with gentle acceleration (or managing to avoid altering speed at all) would most likely see 280 miles on a tank.

The best I managed was 200 miles before the light came on in the Alps, on the sort of roads where the speeds are never high, quite surprising though as with so much 2nd / 3rd / 4th gear work and lots of acceleration out of tight bends I would expect it to be poor, but year on year it does better on slow roads like these - the only time I pay attention to miles per tank etc is on holiday as I have nothing better to do than gather stats whilst the Mrs gets ready for our evening meal.

The odometer seems to be fairly accurate going by interstate mile markers. The speedo is roughly 1-2mph off around 65-70mph with new tires verified with GPS.

The numbers I gave are for local commuting, no high speed interstate, bags on, no top box and I'm sitting around 200lbs with gear. The higher numbers were fairly sedate commuting only. That last tank {the one where I ran out :D} had a small amount of mountain playing mixed in. When I initially bought the thing I was pretty disappointed in the fuel mileage as I was seeing low 40s and mostly high 30s at first which was pretty much all highway speeds {75-90mph mostly}. One tank went bellow 35mpg if memory serves when I was hitting high 90s/low triple digits in Texas. At the time, I had not gotten used to the pessimistic fuel gage and I was stopping like every 150-175 miles for fuel if memory serves. I noticed I was only putting 4.5-5gals of fuel in but it's hard to ignore that damned gage when you are in unfamiliar areas ain't it! :-\

236 mile at 70-75mph before I sputter to a stop at the side of the road. That was riding with empty panniers and only, OEM screen on a Madstad bracket, and 225lbs on the riders seat, no pillion. The bike had an Arrow can and a reflash. Another time we limped up to the pump at 238 miles... I that guy that squeezed every drop he can into the tank!
