Just got back from a fantastic 2 week trip through France and the Pyrenees mountains and twice I ran the tank nearly dry...was on reserve for 40km or there a bouts both times but could only get nearly 19l of fuel back in.
So the question is where is the other 4 litres of fuel?.

Re: Real tank size

Part of it is taken up by the pump and float and there is an air gap for fuel expansion designed in when you fill it that is hard to get fuel in. When they give you fuel tank quantities, it's like dry weight specs...part BS.

Re: Real tank size

This tank does not vent well when filling. A friend added three additional vent holes at the top of the filler tube. There is a thread that tells you how to simply do this.

How do you fill your tank? Do you put the nozzle directly into the tank and press down? This will give you less gallons per fill-up. Pulling back the vent seal and slowly pumping the gas will get you a full tank. If you want that extra .05 gallon put the Tenere on the center stand.

Re: Real tank size

A normal fill, to the bottom of the filler neck insert, will get you 5.6 G or 21.2 L usable capacity.

Re: Real tank size

This brings up an interesting point of how far can you go on a tank if we can only get 5.6 gal. in the tank. I say this because I haven't gotten through my first tank yet. What range should I expect?

Re: Real tank size

I ran the tank down pretty low and even after taking my time filling to brim only got 19 litres in.Maybe there was still 2 litres left though as only did 40 km on reserve.
As for mileage on a tank I have found I can empty it after 180 miles if booting it but getting 200 miles if riding sensibly.

Re: Real tank size

Bummer. I'm hoping to get more. Even riding sensibly. Looking for 250 miles a tank. What kind of riding do you do?

Just a note here... Judging from the post counts of the two guys here in this thread asking questions, you are both new here, right?

May I suggest you try the forum's "Search" function, as both the subject of the tank capacity/way to fill it to max, and the range various riders get have both been discussed extensively and in great detail. Lots of info here if you bother to search for it, and it keeps the same subjects and thread titles from being restarted again and again. You will also get much more complete answers and information regarding the questions you're asking.

Just FYI...

Just another note, Ive got 56 scary kilometers out of my reserve, its amazing how fuel efficiant you can ride when the thought of pushing this beast becomes a real possability....

Dallara..best you get off that high horse before you fall off and get hurt lol.
Find it hilarious you judge what someone knows about a bike by how many posts they have on a forum..get a life and ride the bike lol.
I don't need a forum to tell me how many miles I get out of a tank..I fill her up and ride until empty lol to find what my bike will do...especially handy when I know the minimum it will do ie fully loaded,2 up and riding it like I stole it which was 180 miles which compared to several other big adventure bikes I have owned is very good.

Re: Real tank size

I've put 22.9 litres in mine after going 120km on reserve so tank capacity for me is accurate at 23 litres... I think you under estimate how far you can go on reserve.

Cheers,
Dave.

Re: Real tank size

Thanks for the info...might run the tank dry this weekend to see how big the reserve is.120km has to make it the biggest reserve I have ever seen on a bike.

Wow, I did 60km on reserve and thought I did well. Maybe there were a few more left in it.

No high horse, Redsoul... Other than the one you're riding.

You were asking a question - where is that last bit of fuel that is supposed to be in Yamaha's advertised tank capacity - that has been asked, and answered, many times before. I was suggesting that if you did a search you might not have had to ask the question. What, did you really think you were the first to experience the phenomenon? Obviously not, or you wouldn't have asked the question, right? Ad a search would have taken you less time than the typing you have done in this thread... ::025::

Or are you too good, with too much experience, to do a forum search?

No one was casting aspersions on your riding experience. Read my post again. I said it appeared you were new to the forum, and as such you might not know the very question you asked, as well as the range various Super Tenere riders could go, had been discussed, hashed, re-hashed, etc. ad infinitum, and that you might find those discussions enlightening. But go ahead, ask the same tired, redundant question rather than do a search... But a search will show you a lot more owners have responded to the same question than you're getting here.

And if you can go as far as 180 miles then you're not really riding it "like you stole it"... A Super Tenere properly caned won't go 150 miles to empty. ::025::

Whatever you say, Red...

But I'm not the one asking redundant, already answered questions, nor the one who refuses to do a search. ::025::

Don't be scared Graham, I've gone 105km/65 miles on reserve. Can't have been much left!

My 2014 ran out of gas around 60 miles into reserve which was a half mile before the exit I was going to take to get gas. So close!

IIRC, that was just about what I got when I deliberately ran it dry.

Re: Real tank size

I ran mine 30 into reserve, it looked like I had about 1/2 gal left when I filled up to the top..... Always good times running it down to the last drop ! ::26::
