It's reading ambient air temperature that enters the airbox. So, it's warmer than actual air temperature. I think.

Well if it never changes at all, you might have a problem. Because of placement of the sensor, you won't see the same temp as outside, but the temp should change.

Mine definitely changes, depending on ambient temperature, if I'm moving or stopped, accelerating or steady speed, stuff like that there. R

Is 43 perhaps the lowest it will go?

Well there we have it. What have the temps been like in Calgary?

:D Yeah, I suppose a city known worldwide for 'stampeding' might be a bit unique in a few more areas. How aboot it, 'Calgarians' ::015::

So, there we go. If the temp stays fixed @ 43* it's prolly got a bad sensor. As the airbox warms with engine temperature, the temp reading should rise some over ambient. That should be one of the sensors that will effect your mpg as well. It tells the pcm how dense the air is for fuel mix.

Whats the point ? Why would I care what the airbox temp
is while riding down the road ? If it reads a little high I would
feel warmer or hotter depending on the season .

That's a point made early on, one of the glitches in an otherwise beautiful machine. They didn't give us a dedicated ambient sensor, boo-hoo. ::010:: Yes, you're right, it is a silly thing to put on the dash. If it's hot or cold you feel it. But, it should be accurate first thing in the morning, thus confirming your... dedication? when it is 22* out side.
But it is part of the EFI system and should be working.

Has anybody figured out a correction factor yet?

Seems much of the data isn't accurate but I can compensate enough in my head. I've only got 1500 miles on mine but so far (first day) I figured out how far off the speedo is at different points (that was easy) but now I know how fast I'm really going. After about ten tank fill ups I've figured the correction for my average mpg close enough to be a useful tool for me, even though it reads wrong it seems fairly consistent. I figure the temp gauge is going to be more difficult, even throwing out readings when idling or slow traffic as engine heat really affects this, once at cruising speed the gauge seems to settle down but I would need a known good source of temperature to compare to. Could take quite a while to gather this data.

Besides curiosity I found this tool really useful on my BMW during winter riding as wet road gets nasty below freezing and I'm often riding that range of temperature. Of course I always watch for ice in these conditions and got by for years without an electronic aid, but if it's on the bike why not optimize its use?

Agreed. The engineers had to use some temp as a default in case the senor went bad and this may be it.

As for the error when it's working, every time I check it against a bank or other source, it's consistently 5 degrees F warmer. (Unless just starting out after having shut off the engine.) I can do that math in my feeble head easy enough, so don't see why it's a big deal.

While on the subject of glitches and temperature, I still can't get over the fact that they gave us the ability to toggle between MPH and KPH, but not Degrees-C and Degrees-F. ::010::

I mean really, how hard would it have been to add that simple function to the firmware? ::007::
I may start a petition. What are the chances Yamaha fixes this detail if a bunch of us ask for it (assuming anyone else but me actually cares)? ::009::

Temp was definitely cooler than 43 degrees. Maybe that is the coolest it will read on my bike. I'll know more when it gets warmer here. Its a U.S. bike so its bit of a jaunt to get it checked out at a U.S. Dealer. Cdn Dealers apparently arn't happy with us Canukians buying less expensive U.S. bikes. ::009::

Whaaaaaa. Honestly, how long did they think we would continue to bend over for them? Enough is enough, and that's nuff said.

You can toggle temps, I've done it, I'll tell you how - I hit a bunch of buttons on the dash, in some combination or other... ::025::

I'll worry about it when I'm next in a metric country, but if you need to do it you should be able dig up the procedure in the manual somewhere.
