FJR13's seem popular round here for both Police and biker Paramedics.

I'm guessing this is more reliable and has cheaper operating costs than BMW.

They also have a fully marked up R1, which is used for promotional work, shows and training days. :)

A friend of mine rides an S10, and not long after he bought it, was chased down and pulled over by an officer on a Kawasaki Concours. The guy apologized for stopping him, and said, "I just wanted to see your Yamaha, I think these would make good police bikes." He spend the next 10 minutes asking him all kinds of questions about what he thought of the bike.

My next door neighbor is a Portland motorcycle officer. They are on BMW's. We talk bikes a lot, although he shows absolutely zero interest in my S10. I don't know why, maybe just not his style.

I know a Maryland State Trooper who has no interest in motorcycle discussions and his work bike is also an RT-P. He has said many times that riding all day every day, he just wants to get away from it when not working. Can't blame him.

Surely if riding is what he does all day, I don't blame him if he want to run away from all of it at the end of the day.

I was just thinking the S10 would make a great Police bike when I saw this thread. I'd like to see Yamaha market them here in the States. As for the factory boxes I put them on my '14 and they work just fine. Perfect size for a 2-3 day ride or just riding around town. Not too big, not too small, no complaints here.

Not sure where to place this, but I ran across this thread about police bikes - but in this case a Zero electric bike that has dual sport aspects to it. I am really excited about these bikes and am already anticipating getting one when I get out of grad school to use as my local commuter and play bike. I'll keep the Tenere for more extensive rides but I am really intrigued by these Zero bikes and hope that the technology improves and prices decline in the meantime. This is a video that I found that shows this electric dual sport police bike in CA. The rider does some urban ADV riding on some stairs and a good bit of trail riding at the end. I can just see getting rid of the boxes and other crap off that bike and putting some D606s on there so that I can go tear it up in the dirt.

Old thread I know, but this seems the best place to put this. Yamaha were showing a Roland Sands Designed police Super Tenere that the Redondo Beach Police department will begin using next year. I failed to take a photo but the bike is equipped with soft bags, top bag, bash plate built in laser and hand held radar gun and weapons holders. It also had full Olins suspension. The bike looked very trick. Currently they are using Honda STs and will continue to use them as they are only taking on two of the Teneres for evaluation. One of the officers from the RBPD was present and he thought that with the Tenere they can easily cross curbs and medians without damage, unlike the STs. Maybe someone else snagged a photo, can't find anything on the RSD website.

Back in the day, when we were transitioning to BMW, I attempted to get authorization for using a GS v. RT. For those very same reasons; top speed wasn't an issue. THEY wanted a conventional look. RT it was. At the time, Yamaha wasn't interested in the US police market due to our propensity to litigation. (main reason that Kawi didn't change the KZ1000p for 28ish years) After years of high maintenance costs, we went Honda. Great workhorse. In my opinion, Honda dropped the ball when they discontinued the ST1300. More and more departments were switching from BMW to Honda. Ft Worth TX was ready to go full Honda, until the bike was discontinued; now they're on BMW. 20 of my 25 years was spent on motors. I think the Tenere would be perfect for LE work; except for the OE bags. Honda latch on a Yamaha bag would be wonderful.

That's interesting. I was at the Long Beach IMS on Sat and the Redondo Beach Dept had two officers chatting up people at an inside display of two Honda Africa Twins in full LEO pimpness. I asked them about how they were going to deal with tubes and got a blank look. ::)

Someone mistook me for a traffic cop. White S10, me on Neon Green High-Vis Jacket waiting at the traffic junction and then this guy in a scooter beat the red lights just as mine was turning green and then kind of slowed down and rode like a goodie person. He was waiting for me to pull him over but I just went pass him. Must have a sigh of relief for that bloke.

The S10 has the potential to be a police bike, asked that bloke :)

I also have them on my 13 and had no trouble what so ever so definitely not junk, each to there own.

I too have OE boxes, and I am totally satisfied with them. BUT, the latches ARE the weak spot. I don't think the latches would hold up to being opened/closed 40+ times a day. FJR, RT, ST1300, etc. bags can be opened/closed without having to lock/unlock them EVERY time. The rest of the bike is perfect though.

I was at the IMS show on Saturday, and talked to the Honda rep. They are still selling and supporting the ST1300 for the police, but for whatever reason, not interested in selling to the public. The VFR line is the current replacement. They seem to sell them out of demand, not want on the manufacturer side.

Interesting. I stumbled across this (https://ultimatemotorcycling.com/2017/05/24/honda-donates-africa-twins-redondo-beach-police/). Looks like a shoot out in Redondo! Gut tells me RB PD will find the Super Ten a better compromise for their needs.

You got me curious. So I started searchin'. The official Honda website still shows the ST1300....as a 2012. ??? For $18,230?! And the LE version doesn't list a specific year. It was my understanding, from a Honda Rep, that the CTX was the replacement for the ST. And the website shows the CTX as a '14. So....Glad I don't have to worry about it anymore. ::001::

I still wish I could find one of the top boxes that replaces the rear seat on the European police S10. Tried searching but could never find a link to it. Bummer because I'd love one on my bike.

I believe you are talking about the French (blue) Gendarmerie bikes which have custom top boxes that you won't find on the aftermarket.

fwiw - The French watched too many episodes of CHiPs, as when I see them, there are inevitably two and they ride perfectly side by side.

Those are the ones! Someone makes them for the Gendarmerie so you'd think they'd be available somewhere?
