Well, I can make it consume some. Not sure if it burns it or vents it to the intake, but long sustained 85-95mph run across West Texas will drop the level a bit.
Not enough for me to consider unexplained, or to even worry about.
But most service intervals (4000 miles) require no adding of oil.

The only service interval that requires a dealer's expertise for me would be the valve clearance check at 26,000 miles. The rest is DIY.

I noticed if I do higher rpm downshifts and compression braking a lot of oil ends up in the airbox. If I slow down using brakes more no oil in airbox. This may be your "oil burning"issue.I have a 2012 with 13k on it.Jim

4000 in the USA. I think it's longer everywhere else.
And yea, you don't need a dealer for most service, but I bought a 3 year unlimited mileage service contract. I have them do EVERYTHING! lol
All I've paid for in 36,000 is 2 sets of rear brake pads. They pamper me like I bought the GS. :)

At your miles... km, is about where my 2012 started to use some oil. It used ~ 8oz between changes of 6,000 miles. Now I have 61,000 miles = 98,170 kilometers on this last trip NC to Baja, Mexico and back at 8,000 miles = 12,875 kilometers I had used about 3 ounces of oil... I didn't add any I just changed oil when I got home.
So your 2012 could just be ready to start using a bit of oil.

BTW: I've only used oil on longer trips loaded down... here at home in the mtns of Western NC no oil loss between changes! Also on the trips about 9,000 miles into a trip I get up and start the bike as I start to ride down the road the oil light comes on... I coast to a stop and turn the bike off... I turn it back on NO oil light. I add 4 - 6 oz of oil later in the day and no problem.

Mine... I'd love to think has pretty much stopped using or slowed down using oil... is that possible?
I do love this Super T! Enjoying the hell out of it! ::015::

The 2014 ES model comes with a center stand and lots of other extras for $1000. more. Following the oil consumption though. No such worry on my 2012 with 46,000kms. Looking to upgrade to a 2014 or 2015 ES.

Yours sounds like mine. Start up and take off the oil light will come on. If you have to do this ride it very easy for about 5 minutes while it warms up. Mines a cold blooded beast, she likes to be nice and warm, before putting it in gear.

Hola Juan:
Soy Antonio de Mexico, thanks for your very useful information, I´m changing from a R1200GS 2012 (lost in an accident) to the new ST 1200Z (the only model coming to Mexico) I´m picking it up today.
I heard it does not have a centerstand, nor the passenger handles, it does have a mini skidplate and no other protections. (sad)
I think my driving conditions here in Mexico are very similar to yours, dogs, chickens, potholes speed reduction bumps (topes), taxis, pedestrians, and above all, a very limited and poor motorcycle respect and deference.
Thanks to you, the first thing I´ll be checking is the steering nut and all other bolts and nuts.
I´will let you know my impressions and new additions, I think the first has to be the engine and covers guard and the skidplate. any other suggestions?
Saludos
Hola Antonio and hi to all.

I visited Mexico and traveled the whole country in 1999 in one GS 1100, also with my wife.

Beautiful country, with same road se conditions as Colombia. Nasty Off road and damaged paved roads, pot holes, rivers, mud, unexpected speed bumps,....... I been there many times, I am also an Alpinist, so I have claimed most of Mexico's mountains. .

So, the XT1200Z comes without centerstand. 2011's model fits perfectly. One needs to order the set of 2 bolts and nuts 2 springs, 1 rubber pipe for the springs, the rubber top and the stand. To mount the kit is just a matter of 15 minutes and few tools.

No passenger handles. I am sure they are really needed, however I had ordered a set of side bags from Colombian manufacturer MASTECH and I suppose that the side cases supports will help to hold the hands of the passenger. Having said that, I did about 300kmts of nasty off road, she as passenger, and she claims what is needed is a support for the back.

It comes with an small skydplate, or a plastic protector for the carter and lower section of the engine. You really need a strong one, do not wait for it. Bike is not very high, and it has short travel on its suspension.

I would strongly suggest to regrease all bearings: those of the bones and relay in suspension, rear arm, front steering and both wheels. I will do mine soon, will talk about them. This advice I just because our countries are wet, rains a lot, even in towns we get 20 to 30 cmts lakes on the roads. Deep mud on roads, and high pressure washing.

Hot bearings drink cold water like "garganta de lata toma vino", even with the best seals and gaskets.

BTW, Mastech has awesome crashbars, fog lights and luggage, for a fraction of the price of Swmotech or Touratech..... I had try them and they are just fine. I had the ir crash bars and their skydplate. I had droped the bike twice so far, once in tarmac and once in a cross track where I train. They are strong and as good as any other brand. I believe they export to Mexico. Believe, check their website.....

I also made some sliders with old roller stakes wheels.

In regards to the OEM tires, the Bridgestone Battle wings, so far the rubber is fine, they grip well on tarmac, and on dry, off road they perform decent. They climb well on debris, they grab fine on hard packed dirt.

But the suck on mud, as expected by just looking at them. Wet offroad gets the shivers about of me, and the grabbing on loose rock is juts to bad.

It's a more tarmac oriented tire.

I will change them next week, either for a Karoo 3 or a TKC 80...maybe a K60. Nor sure. That would be a different topic.

Iam just loving this bike, it is smooth, quiet, no so much vibration, narrow, your legs are not spread, smaler, good in twisties, good milage so far, Im going for the Skidplate, the crashBars and the centerstand as as first approach.
Juan how many kilometers did your BattleWings lasted?
Thanks for your input

Re: Super Tenere 2014 faults and problems, early fixes for them. (also legacy problems from earlier

I just got my ST and rode it some miles(Just 20 minutes ride), great, great surprise, it is really smooth, very easy to handle at low speeds, I cannot feel the weight, it is so silent, (point for the ST) the ride is so soft, a lot less engine vibration, therefore handlebar vibration as well, (point for the ST) great grip at low speeds, the engine sounds a little forced when revved, but I think is a brand new engine ???, the ST ABS let the back tire slip a little more than the GS, on the GS the ABS did not let any tire slip at all, maybe, because of this, the stopping distance is better in the ST.(Point for the ST)
Regrets: No center stand, no passenger handle bars, the top rack is too small, I think it will need an additional top rack for a decent Top case, I did not like the gear indicator, the gear number disappears every time you pull the clutch, a dash appears instead, why do I need a dash when I´m standing in a red light, with the clutch in, and I don´t know which gear I´m in. (point for the GS).
Great experience so far, I´ll let you know more later.

Hola,

Today I am replacing the OEM Battlewings with Karoo 3. I just used the battlewings for 1300 Kmts. I red somewhere that they can last up to some 9.000 kmts.

I will keep the BW for a on road oriented trips. I will use the K3 now and will report in the proper K3 thread. Anyway I will let you hours know about this tires.

I am training with the bike on black dirt and debris, normal, easy mud and general off road. I am not quite happy on getting on heavy mud with it. Nonetheless, we are in rainny season in Colombia, and this weekend I rode the ST on a mx track, after we turned the mud around with our Enduro bikes so it dried a bit. The BW where not as bad as one may think but they skated anyway. Nothing happened to me and the bike.

I like the "smooth and quiet" report. Do you mind if I ask what other bike you are comparing this too? Thanks for the feedback.

THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT"

Do not get to excited. Water and mud comes in. I am carrying there the user's manual (inside a zip lock bag), one head lamp, one reflective light vest, and a tire calibration tool. Al messy now.

Just to let you know.

I just got done replacing the auxiliary DC fuse (3) , which took me all but 2 minutes to do :D The strange thing was after I replaced the fuse, the engine struggled a little to get started, which has never happened before. It's okay now, but it took a couple of starts to get it back to where it was before.

Thank you, that puts things into perspective. The 2014 S10 sounds very encouraging.

No idea. I've had the bike since November and as far as I remember, every time I've tried to plug something into it, it never worked. It's not biggie really, but I went to the dealership to pic up a spare fuse and of course they were out lol

Most bikes burn more oil when doing high speed long jaunts.Found this to happen on several of my previous bikes when riding around Europe which didn't normally use any oil .
