Super Tenere 2014 faults and problems, early fixes for them. (also legacy problems from earlier mode

I open this one to discuss about specific problems with the 2014 model, so new owners can be specifically aware. I do have an XT1200Z.

So far, after some 1000 kmts including some 600 PM off road:

Adjustable windshield moves a lot while off road, specially if you have a GPS. Screws get loose. Fix: use loclite medium strength.

Also, screws of the head light, dashboard, a d other screws of the head got loose. I have to re-tigthem them all. Same fix, loclite medium strength.

Very dangerous, the top nut on the steering got loose, rendering the bike useless. I was in the middle of nowhere in Colombia, where I live, and it was impossible to find the right size bit to re-thighten. I understand this has happened before to other ST models, as reported in other forums and by Yamaha Colombia. Fix, re-thighten at 130 Nm, use loclite hard strength.

And really annoying, the bike does not have a cebterstand, big thing, specially when you have the main steering nut loose or, as in my case, a flat tire (regardless of the tubeless type)

So far that's my report so far. I hope other members can contribute to problem specific for XT1200Z 2014 and fixes.

The biggest problem is your dealer. They did a crap job setting up your bike. They should have gone through it and made sure all the bolts and fasteners were torqued to spec.

That might be true, however I and collecting here problems and faults and the purpose of this topic is solutions and early warning. For that, the steering nut loose is a problem that has happened before to other people, as well as the 100 ml consumption of oil each 1000 kmts, or water coming into the driveshaft..... So go and figure who's to blame, my point here is early warnings and mitigation fixes.

I don't know if I'd go as far as citing simple loctite fixes as a fault or problem, especially given you've ridden over half the bikes mileage offroad.

In fact, the steering bearings are due for a 600mi (~1k km) looseness check at this time anyway following what I'm guessing is a similar service manual to the 2012 I'm referencing. What's the book say on checking the other fasteners? My 2012 shows 4k miles, but no doubt it'd be in your best interest anyway to do that much sooner if ridden offroad regularly.

The center stand complaint is equivalent to driving a 2WD truck in the mountains, then saying it was annoying it didn't have 4WD when you could've got the model that did.

Not a bad idea to start a 2014 model specific thread, but I don't know what else to say about your problems ::003::

Glad to see the thread start for V2 of the Super Tenere. But gotta say, I thought it would likely be a repeat of V1 issues. You know, a loose spoke. A headlight harness....wait, that one is probably not gonna show up.

Anyways, the new windshield mount is completely redesigned. Hope it's up to task for off-roading.
Loose steering stem nut. Yea, that gets reported often enough. But I suppose that is tough to completely get rid of because of the nature of those bearings setting in and thus requiring early attention. Especially if ridden off road during the initial 600 miles.
And finally, the missing center stand. Hmmm. I gotta say a center stand is NOT an option on the Tenere. Even if Yamaha has decided to make it one. I won't ever have one without it. So problem solved.

I too feel like having lots of things coming loose is indicative to less than ideal make ready attention. But I also can reason that if I took my 2012 off the show room floor and rode it like I often do now, it might have had some loosening of a few things before the first checkup too.

Oh, just remembered, the oil consumption too. That too is not widely reported by many of V1. Less than an impressive early report for the Tenere we have come to know over the last few years. Will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Good catch on the oil consumption, snake. Especially considering some of the new and reworked internals on the 2014. The fasteners coming loose are kind of a gray area, some call "offroad" merely non-paved roads, whereas folks like you call offroad "OMFG@#$@! I can't turn around". :D

Each case of offroading is relative to the different meaning of the word, and along with it perhaps a bit more of an intensive first service check over making sure you've still got your nuts.

Off road means here a road where you take a 19 " front tire and 190 mm suspension travel bike and you pass without worries. For the harder stuff, buy an enduro bike. I had before an XT660Z.... A different story.

Nonetheless Colombian roads are big time, not in the best shape, even paved roads have this f..... holes.....

I have to admit that first check should have been done at 500 km, but I was so happy offroading that when I went for the check, my bike had already, 1025 kmts. I agree that for that use I gave to the bike I should have done the checkup earlier.

And I just got my new center stand. 2014 model comes without it.

The 2014 ES model comes with a center stand and lots of other extras for $1000. more. Following the oil consumption though. No such worry on my 2012 with 46,000kms. Looking to upgrade to a 2014 or 2015 ES.

I have 70,000km and no oil consumption issues. I also get the impression the bike was not put together properly.

Hi Redcat, I need to indicate that I'm Colombia as of today we only have one model, the XT1200Z.

BTW, the 2011 kit for center stand fits perfectly the 2014.

I seem to remember reading about a change to the valves and to the rings in the '14. Perhaps a solution.

Yamaha may simply emulating the boxer motor with a little designed in oil consumption so it has a familiar feel to former GS owners. ::025::

Re: Super Tenere 2014 faults and problems, early fixes for them. (also legacy problems from earlier

Hola Juan:
Soy Antonio de Mexico, thanks for your very useful information, I´m changing from a R1200GS 2012 (lost in an accident) to the new ST 1200Z (the only model coming to Mexico) I´m picking it up today.
I heard it does not have a centerstand, nor the passenger handles, it does have a mini skidplate and no other protections. (sad)
I think my driving conditions here in Mexico are very similar to yours, dogs, chickens, potholes speed reduction bumps (topes), taxis, pedestrians, and above all, a very limited and poor motorcycle respect and deference.
Thanks to you, the first thing I´ll be checking is the steering nut and all other bolts and nuts.
I´will let you know my impressions and new additions, I think the first has to be the engine and covers guard and the skidplate. any other suggestions?
Saludos

I'm an owner of an oil guzzling Tenere! Day to Day, it's fine. When I load it down and hit the hwy or ride hard in the twisties, she burns oil almost as fast as it burns gas. Hopefully they fixed this in the 14's.

Wow! First I've heard of this problem. Never met anyone that owns an S10 with an oil burning problem.

Another S10 owner I know says his also uses oil when ridden long distances at high speeds on the highway.
