Suggestion for a brake disc bike lock

Now that I have my new Super Tenere 1200 ES I’m considering longer, multi-week trips. Having immigrated from South Africa (some years back) I’m used to anything not tied down being stolen. Certain parts of Canada, sadly, seem to have much higher crime rates now than in past years and I don’t want to come out of a motel one morning and find myself bike-less.

A friend mentioned that “you can get a lock that goes through a hole in the brake disc” and that “some have audible alarms”.

Does anyone have experience with such bike locks? Ideally something not too heavy but still strong and with an, ideally ear piercing, audible alarm if the bike is moved, etc.

Before I was fortunate enough to have a garage, my sons and I used something similar to this. We ran the cable(s) through the frame and then around a post. Another option is to run the cable through the wheels and frame and then around a post. Obviously, not fool/thief proof, but it will stop the casual thief. Runing it through the wheels keeps them from just being unbolted. The one below is carried by Wal-Mart for $20 usd.

I "heard" that if they know what they're doing, it's easy enough to defeat. Then they just roll it away.

Something like this will do fine. I work on the thought, if they get through that the bike was getting stolen regardless of what security I had. When away on tour, I’m careful with security, but don’t stress over it.

If it comes in a case, when the lock is being used, fold and stick the case under the handlebar clamp near the ignition, acts as a reminder the lock in on the disc.

similar locks are available with an alarm.

Since this was invented... not a chain, not a padlock on the disc, will save you from theft, if the one who steals has the intention of committing the theft….and he know what he do
Padlock in a Brake disc?……the thief will cut the disc and drive away…he just has to avoid using that brake…

Yup, that's why I said nothing's fool/thief proof. They just stop the casual/amateur ones.

Right you are, a "professional" brings professional tools to the job. Parking inside a locked structure is the only almost foolproof way, and even that doesn't always work.

If they want it . . . . they're going to get it. . . . unless I catch them in the act.

Personally, I don't worry about it. My biggest fear is some drunks pushing the bike over or other mild vandalism. In the very unlikely event it does get stolen, that's what insurance is for.

Thankfully across many years of touring, and staying in some unbelievably sketchy dirtbag motels (I'm looking at you Thunder Bay), nothing has ever happened to my bike.

Ya, everyone knows that a professional thief can steal just about anything they want and there's no way to make anything 100% theft proof, blah, blah, blah. My job is to make it as difficult for them as I can. A good cable/chain and lock takes a little time to defeat and they make noise doing it. Two locks make it a little harder. Locking the fork makes it hard to push it anywhere. You have to do everything you can to make them look for an easier target.

I think an alarm along with the locks makes it more difficult than the average thief wants. An alarm making one hell of a loud sounds works very good and even better is one making some noise along with sending you a message to come save your bike.
