these are not young guys at action. they are grown men working in there, apparently with decades of experience. east coast yamaha rep vouched for them. technically since he works for Yamaha and all warranty on the east coast goes through him, he should know who is good and who is not. I met him at the bike show. as soon as I mentioned the phrase clutch basket he knew who I was ::025::
I can reluctantly look the other way on loose clutch line, unnecessarily cut oem zip tie clips, incorrectly routed harness if the mechanicals during transfer were properly done. I say reluctantly because I was very specific with them about taking as long as they want to do this big unusual job and go over the bike several times and not to work on it unless they are in a blissful state of mind. ::015::
There are pages in the manual that have pictorial on how to route wiring for f@cks sake. I guess they didn't look. That begs the question how was everything torqued down. Of course they said they did. Then these pistons. Why in the f@ck would they change those just for the hell of it? That means I am back in a break-in period sort of at 33K miles? And then of course the valve clearance which they can't recall if they did or not. I took het out for spin today, short but exciting. It feels great riding ST ::012:: ::001::
lets see how she performs over the next several months, she is under warranty til 2018, but if she lets me down again like that or starts eating up oil, Yamaha will have to keep this lemon.

jeager22, how many mile do you have on that beast?
Paul, 47,7474 trouble free miles. ::012:: (Except for a couple of minor self induced issues requiring engine rebuilds! :p )

It is interesting that they replaced the pistons. A couple of thoughts. If for any reason the rings or pistons were damaged, either by trash in the oil from the failed parts (unlikely because the filter should have caught it first) or during tare down, they would have to replace the sets. (As I noted above you can't buy just the rings). The second is that it is VERY difficult to get the pistons and rings back into the cylinders. I have replaced many pistons in the past and never broken a ring but I broke rings TWICE on the S10. And I was following the service manual exactly. The bottom oil ring is a three piece deal and the outer rings are paper thin. So they are very easy to catch and break and not even notice. The first time I didn't notice and everything seemed to go together just fine. And it ran great. But it used excessive oil and got worse over time. It continued to run fine and got me coast-to-coast and back but used 6 qt of oil from Albuquerque to home (Orlando). ??? So out came the motor again and in went new cylinders, pistons, and rings. But even knowing the issue with the oil ring and being very careful, I broke ANOTHER #*$&& ring! Fortunately I had a spare due to the double order issues above. It took me most of a full day, a lot of swear words, and contortions to finally get them all in right. So the moral of this story is DO watch your oil consumption closely after a rebuild involving new pistons and rings.

A good reminder. The parts request for my CCT (jumped timing) repair included pistons. note: my engine used oil (below the window) just before it jumped timing.

"Check Oil Before Every Ride" is part of a check list in the Service Department.

Hey man! I'll be in NM in august! ::008::
Davis guys cleaned out the engine and replaced the clutch basket, they didn't touch anything else. They said motor was clean. Filter got everything. No issues on the way back whatsoever.

Thanks for the info jaeger. oil watch is #1 on my list. putting new pistons/rings into a used cylinder heads is what concerns me, especially if that was uncalled for. just a matter of getting those warm days for long rides. im talking 10-12 hrs days at 80-90 mph. i am going to put this work to the test.

OK with want was done here yes.

But with a normal bike, no special maintenance, you change the oil and put the right amount in, do you need to check the oil more than after the next good ride after the oil change, on a regular basis? I was planning to let the low oil light guide me once I was 100 miles or so after a change.

Why put all of your eggs in one basket ... Hoping the light works? Can you give a good reason why you shouldn't spend five seconds before a ride taking a look at the oil sight glass to be sure you see some oil?

The filter is only going to filter the oil going to the crank, cams, transmission shafts and and a few other parts. The cylinder walls aren't lubed with filtered oil. If the trash is too big to go through the screen on the pump, it stays in the crankcase and gets splashed on the cylinder walls.

Spoke to the service manager about the pistons. always good to call months after the job, something new always pops up.
When I picked up a bike, I was told that they replaced them because they could and Yamaha sent them, which sounded odd because Yamaha sends what is ordered. And it was said in a manner as if they did a big favor for me by replacing them. Anyway, today I was told that based on foggy recollection something had happened to one of the pistons' ring or rings during the transfer and they had ordered all new sets to get replaced. I then asked about cylinder walls. Response was that they do hone the walls in the shop, but the mechanic is on vacation and there are no notes on this project so he'd have to ask the mechanic if it was done or not. At this point I am not sure the info is credible, but is certainly collectible.

You are working yourself into a tizzy, nothing matters unless the motor is not knocking or going thru oil. ::021::

If Issues come up, then deal with them then :)
