Went to the Progressive (give 'em props for sponsoring) International Motorcycle Show in Seattle. Cool cutaway display of the ST engine with a poster on the heritage of our machines. HoebSTer wanted to take it home and make it part of his ST shrine in his garage!
Here are some pics. Sorry about the quality - only had a crappy camera phone. Anyone have any better ones?
By the way, the Ducati booth personnel were of vastly better quality than Yamaha's (if you know what I mean). :pI hear they are really high maintenance as well, though.

Transparant Aluminum .. now that'd be a farkle. Nice photos, very cool cutaway! Makes the cam chain look a mile long :)

Glad everyone liked this. Pretty cool and like having X-Ray vision. Here are some more. Again, sorry about the quality. I think that the plexiglass got in the way of the auto focus on the phone camera. Be nice if there some quality photos somewhere. Hard to believe how they can compact a 1200 cc engine and transmission. Great marketing by Yamaha! ::022::

Boy, our cam chain looks long to reach cam's from the crank. ??? Anyone know the stroke on this torque monster?

I thought the clutch had one big nut in the middle. This one appears to have six on it. Did I misunderstand something?
Or is that just a top plate of some sort?

A sign on the cylinder says the stroke is 3.13 inches (not sure if each cylinder is the same).

That outer ring is the spring portion of the pressure plate. And it, of course, is pushing on the pressure plate. The discs and plates are enclosed. The one big nut you might be remembering is way down inside the basket and holds the basket to the crank.

Bore x Stroke of the Super Tenere engine is 98.0mm (3.86") x 79.5mm (3.13") - http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/products/modelspecs/651/0/specs.aspx

As has been mentioned, that's large flat plate is the actual clutch spring on the Super Tenere. Those six bolts secure to the basket. Essentially underneath there the clutch is pretty much the same as most conventional multi=plate wet clutches have been on motorcycles for decades and decades. That's one reason it's so easy to convert the S-10's clutch to six conventional coil springs if you like... Barnett makes a kit, for instance, using a conventional outer floating pressure plate and the six springs mentioned.

In theory, a single diaphragm spring (like the S-10 has) *should* be superior in operation, but many don't agree with this and think the *feel* and engagement threshold, etc. is better with the coil springs.

Yes, the stroke for both cylinders is identical. Can't remember any production engine ever that didn't have identical stroke for all their cylinders...

I hadn't read where these where VVT, Variable Valve Timing, so compression release fits. partsnation.com doesn't even show the assembly in their fiche.
