Much better and clearer pics than mine, Elwood. Post more (even of the Ducati booth!)

Okay, can one of you tech. heads explain "automatic decompression"?

I think Ducati is using too much plastic these days ;D

I think the Auto Decompression just leaves the exhaust open a bit longer and letting some air escape when cranking to allow the pissy little starter a chance to get the engine turning at low revs. Less air in there is less air to compress. Maybe less air also equals too much fuel for the amount of air.

Except with that explanation the first compression on the starter should be a bit tough.

Maybe they forgot about that bit on the EFI circuit as well. too much fuel and not much compression = not perfect.

Just another wild speculation to add to the Hard start issue.

Auto decomp has some small pins that act just like the cam lobes. It cracks the valve open, slightly. Once the cam is spinning fast enough (engine running) the centrifugal force on the auto decomp cams retracts the pins and only the main cam lobe touches the bucket.

This is nothing new but it does allow for a smaller starter motor and all the associated crap with that.

I'm sort of on the fence about it. The pins visibly scar the buckets over time.

S10 engine cutaways from IMS Long Beach. Caution: the last one was taken at Kawasaki booth. It was taken while this great "accessory" was hopping off the seat. I've been told the maintenance cost is too high.

I wish Yamaha would make a poster of that engine. It would look good on my garage wall

Love those cutaways. If they had that at Dallas IMS, I missed it. Thanks.

Hands down one of the best posts/threads I have seen on any forum. A picture is worth a thousand words and a glimpse into the inner workings of the beast is invaluable.

When I was a kid, my Dad and I built a model I received as a Christmas present. It was called the "Visible V". It was a model of a V8 engine with a clear plastic block etc. So you could see how an engine works. Assembling it and looking at it gave me my first understanding of how engines work.

Same here when I was a kid. Seems like starting at a very young age, we kids were exposed to a lot of various internal combustion engine fundamentals. Be it helping dad with his car/truck in the driveway, building a go cart from a B&S nabbed off a victim mower, or maybe riding around on grandpas tractor.

Lots of models, displays, and photos in my life.

These kids nowadays aren't even aware they have a jack & spare. Much less participating as a part of the drivetrain by mastering a clutch.

Anyways, yea, i would love a nice poster of these shots. If someone pointed at a source for high rez copies, i might make me some.

I was at the Cleveland bike show and got pictures of the same cutaway engine. I was going to post until I seen it was already uploaded.

One thing I realized by looking at this engine is our twin actually has (4) spark plugs. I would have suspected I was getting ripped off the first time I went to replace them if I had not noticed this.

Oh, and here is the Cleveland Ducati chick. I conned her into standing in front of my buds vintage triumph flat tracker. Made his day for sure. I'm sure that thang is fast........or at least I would be riding it :)
