Over 70mph (actual) the mpg drops significantly in my experience, due to the drag coefficient increasing at the square. When I'm on trips my mpg on two lanes is usually around 45-48, and on interstates it is 40-42, due to the higher speeds. This is usually at altitude here in the west. I usually get blinking light at 180-200 miles and count on a 1 gal reserve.

What revs do you you guys getting less than 40mpg run around at? I'm 145lbs and typically run on the back roads at 50-60 in 5th and 6th gear, but also am aggressively coming out of most corners and accelerate at times at WOT. My mileage has never been worse than 43mpg. Once while going across Kansas I watched the instant readout at 36mpg (80 indicated with a horrible head/cross wind at 101 degrees) but the tank was still 38 as calculated. My best calculated was at 60mpg in the Rockies. And typical 70mph speed limit (so 80 indicated) gives me about 48 avg.

I would think you should be pushing 50mpg running between 50 & 60 in 6th. Knock off a few for the hard acceleration.
My best tank was 46 riding 2 up at 80 and below indicated.

Well, remember that an *indicated* 80 MPH is really only about 72-73 real MPH... Maybe 74.

I use my GPS for truer speed readings, and down here in Texas our posted limit on most highways is now 75 MPH. And if you don't run a *REAL* 80 MPH you'd rapidly become a hood ornament on a Suburban or a big, diesel pick-up. I regularly a GPS 85 MPH, which is spinning more than 4,500 RPM, sometimes for hours on end... and 90 MPH is not uncommon, especially running a radar detector (as I do). At those speeds getting 35-36 MPG is the norm, not the exception.

And if you toss in some of South Texas Coastal winds hitting you head on that can drop to 30 MPG real quick.

There are times when we really get to rockin' and rollin' in the Texas Hill Country you'll see you just ran 100 miles at an average of 28 MPG. ???
