i'm replacing the rear shock with an ohlins. i don't have a shop manual so i looked over the bike. is removing the shock as easy as it looks? any gotchas? anything i need to do in particular? i'm not johnny-mechanic, but i enjoy doing what i'm able. on the surface this appears to be something i can handle, but i don't want to bite off more than i'm able to chew.

Wasp has done this already and he posted info with pics. I think it is somewhere on here or in his thread on AdvRider. Seems it was pretty straightforward. Congrats on the shock!

No problem. Glad to help. I will volunteer to take the Ohlins of your hands if it doesn't work out for you... ;)

you've got dibs. :) i wish i could get by with the stock shock, but given the loaded weight of the bike, it's just not going to suffice. i reckon i could lose some weight, but where's the fun in that? hehehe.

Hi Jason.
Congrats, and enjoy... Do spend the time reading up on adjustment, and take the time to understand what the suspension is doing underneath you to set up to suit you.

To remove the old and install the new, you must:
remove the cable guide on the inside of the R/H subframe member,
remove the two suspension tie links.
Have someone move the wheel/swing arm up and down very slightly to remove the bottom shock bolt and also to replace it.

Pretty easy job realy but the Ohlins cable routing is not that well thought out... Does the job if you feel you dont need to tinker with it.

Greg.

thanks, greg. i looked over your ohlins thread and it helped a lot. also got some shop manual info from a member which confirmed a few things. i should have some time this weekend to install the shock. and, yep, i'll get this one dialed in correctly.

it gives me pause too! one of the happiest days of my life, though... a nice haircut and shave and the knowledge that they didn't scramble my noodle after drilling a hole in my noggin and extracting the cyst.
