Thinking I will sell my OEM side and top cases. As I recall Yamaha supplied the keyed lock cylinders with the bike, so anyone purchasing the used cases should have their own keyed lock cylinders on hand. Is that correct? Is there a way I can get my keyed cylinders out of the cases intact? If not, how would the new owner go about replacing the lock cylinders?

They will come out but you need to use extreme caution or you will be hunting little pieces all over your garage. The first thing you need to do is to secure the latch. Look for a screw hole at the back of the latch hook. You'll have to open them all the way up and put the little wood screw back in. This is how new ones come from the factory. Then, it's 2 security torks screw on the inside of the box- it's a plate that attaches to the lock tumbler.

Don't take the lock out without securing the latch hook!!!

Why not just create another key from your own, check for operation and send the boxes away with a key? Like if I bought them off of you I am in So. Cal with my own Tenere. As long as your info is private I doubt you need to worry about security. If you sell them let me know ;D, I am teeering on something here concerning panniers. Unless there is something I ought to know about the Yami panniers.?

Much has been said about the Yamaha cases. Essentially, they are smallish and have fiddly/touchy mechanisms. They work well enough. In my personal judgement, they are sturdy enough, although that has been questioned too I think. For me, as I tour in all weather, have a CPAP (medical equipment) and a large camera kit (dSLR, tripod, 3 lenses, bag of accessories), and sometimes carry camping gear as well, the Yamaha cases are just not big enough. If you are looking for around town use, or light (weekend) solo touring, in my judgement they could be a great bargain.

I wasn't planning to sell mine until I have the Jesses in hand (see my other thread). However I am getting some PM's in addition to your inquiry. This forum is not the place for a sale, although I appreciate the inquiry. I would suggest that anyone interested pm me for details, as I am not ready to list them in the little pimpin' section yet.

As for the keying suggestion: I would just leave the lock cylinders in if I couldn't get them out. Not that I am worried about someone having a copy of my key, but I know I would want to use my regular key rather carry an extra that looks the same and be constantly fiddling with figuring out which was which. At this point it seems I should be able to get my locks out. I would prefer to keep them in case I ever want to go back to the oem boxes, or for whenever I might sell the bike.

Thanks for your thoughts and inquiry.

I think there may be a helpful photo of the little wood-screw hole and the backing plate that bloodline is referring to Here (first photo in comments section; the hole for the wood screw is at 11 o'clock). There’s nothing else holding the cylinder in place. It's kept from spinning around by notched slots in the plastic body of the case. Once you secure the locking arm and remove the backing plate, the cylinder slides out by pushing on it from the inside of the box. There's a reason that he's emphasizing that the latch needs to be secured before trying to remove the cylinder. It's really all held together by the spring loaded pressure against the cylinder body.

Interesting. My dealer installed the bags for me. I didn't get those nice covers over the lock mechanism and never knew about them until now. I also didn't get the "wood screw." I see the hole, but will need to find something to put in there. Might have to see if the dealer will do it, since they didn't give me those back.

Thanks!

have the buyer (who owns a Tenere) swap them for his at a dealer and use his old wooden plugs on yours so all of your parts are intact. Ask him to give them back. its worth a try.

It actually says to retain the rubber covers in the installation instructions. They go back on once the lockset is installed.

The screw is just a #6 or so, about 3/4" long.

There are several other fasteners that were removed and replaced with the installation of your factory boxes. I hope you have a bag of bolts...

They gave me some stuff with the top case, but nothing with the side cases. I will be talking to them about that, but I suspect the Jesse luggage I am getting has what I need.

The Yamaha bags are now listed in the for sale forum with pics.

The bolts that the side case rack mounts up with replaced the passenger grab rail bolts. I can't remember if any of the fasteners around the passenger footpegs got replaced. I know several were added. You need a torks T50 security to remove the rear bolt on the side case rack, BTW. And if your dealer followed the instructions, it'll have loctite on it too.

Yep! I am planning to install the Jesses w/o the passenger grab rails. I think everything will work out, but if I have to order a few bits from Yamaha it shouldn't be too big a deal.

Thanks for all the help!

It took me less than 5 minutes to get the cylinders out. No problems with losing anything, however if you close the case lid with the lock out it can be a challege to get them open again. Trust me.

The dealer has found the missing hardware and agreed to take the lock cylinders out for me! The mechanic will also show me which parts to remove and include with the cases.

Well first, kudos to South Valley Motorsports. They very graciously removed all of the lock cylinders and mount kits for me, returning the bike to stock condition with respect to the cases. Now I have to make sure I have everything and it is all sorted properly to go to it's new owners. Since I never saw any of this stuff loose before, and don't have a parts list or instructions I could use some help.

First the Top Case:

This was on the bike (and I believe belongs with the bike):

I took it off and saw (does any of this need to come off and go with the top case?):

I also have these parts loose ( I think the bright metal screw, washer and nut go with the top case, don't know about the two painted screws and washers):

So, what goes with the top case to the new owner?

Ok, now the side cases:

I got this stuff...

I think this is everything? Yes?

Thanks,

Jan

I don't have a top case, but that second picture is the base for the factory tail rack, so that's a keeper if you're putting the factory tail rack back on (as opposed to an Altrider rack or something like that).

As for the side case mounting kit, there's a photo and list of everything in that same post I linked above. Looks like all the major parts are there.

Ok then, using Bill's parts list, if I put these:

in with the side case mount kit it is complete. Yea!

That means that the top case is shipped with no extra parts. The new owner just removes the old rack cover and is good to go?
