Basically, I have a relay with five terminals (85, 86, 87, 87a, 30), a relay plug harness with a wire for each relay terminal, a violet wire from the CC unit, and a yellow brake wire that I need to connect. The diagram indicates that I want to go from violet to NC on the relay.
On your relay:

Terminals 85 & 86 are for the pull-in coil. When current flows thru 85 & 86 the relay is energized.

Terminal 30 is the 'power in'.

Terminal 87a is the 'normally closed' terminal. Current flows from #30 to #87a when the relay is not energized. Terminal #87 is 'dead' at this point.

Terminal 87 is the 'normally open' terminal. Current flows from #30 to #87 when the relay is energized. Terminal #87a is 'dead' now.

Here is a schematic of the inside of a 5 terminal relay. Most relays do not have terminal 87a.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. I feel reasonably confident that I have the relay wired correctly. Now I'm having a new problem...

I'm trying to do the initial diagnostic tests with the LED next to the dip switches, but the LED is not lighting at all. I do have power to the control pad, but no diagnostic LED no matter what buttons I press. I have checked all the physical connections and everything appears solid. I even tried routing my brown wire directly to my fuzeblock temporarily to ensure that I have a good power source, but no change.

What should I check next?

The clutch switch has to be disconnected to do the diagnostic test.
You should have three 12V positive supply connections.
What control pad are you using ?
All the diagnostic does is verify 12V is present, that the control pad functions work, that your brake circuit ground is completed and that your VSS is picking up your wheel rotation when you spin the wheel by hand.

Does you control pad light up ?

Check. I have not connected the light green wire (don't plan to since I have the clutch jumper fuse in)

On the subject of unconnected wires, I also have the orange wire hanging, and the black+gray plug for the "optional signal generator" not connected. And the 87 terminal of the relay is not connected.

You should have three 12V positive supply connections.
Is this right?

Brown 10A line spliced into brown/red ignition wire (verified 12V at fuse with multimeter)
Red 4A line spliced into brown brake switch (verified 16v (?) at splice with multimeter)
Violet wire into relay (verified at 12V at relay terminal with multimeter when brake is pressed)

What control pad are you using ?
It's the same one the guy on ADV used (looks a little different from yours). It has six wires out.

Yes, the control pad lights up. I took it apart and verified 12V going out the gray wire. Not sure how I would test to make sure the buttons are working...

Please let me know if you have any other suggestions for me. I really appreciate you taking the time to help. I'll ride up to KY and buy you a beer sometime.

You might try temporarily connecting the violet wire straight to ground, bypassing the relay. (just for testing)
The cruise control unit needs to see a ground path thru the violet wire, not 12 volts.
If you have your three 12v supplys and a good ground connection for the black wire and the violet connected straight to ground.
I would be suspect of your control pad or its connections.

So if violet is not one of them, what are the 3 12v supplies?

1 - Brown/red switched ignition
2 - Brown brake switch
3 - ?

the 3rd 12V+ is just for the backlight in the control pad.
I dont know what color that is on your control pad, IIRC mine was light blue as shown in the wiring schematic.
This will not stop your cruise from working, its designed to be connected to a dash light that could be manually controlled by a dimmer switch.

Rostra cruise control kit contents

I probably missed this some where but looking on Amazon dot com I see the Rostra 250-1223 but it looks like the control switch is a separately sold item while in your picture of the parts of the kit, it appears to be part of the kit. (your picture at http://users.tpg.com.au/roger38/Rostra%20XT1200Z.htm).

Does anyone know if this is an AU versus US difference and over here we have to buy the switch separately???

Great article and instructions. I think I'm going to finally have my first CC on a motorcycle. I wish I had had it for the last two trips to AK :)

Thanks

My understanding is that Rostra only sells individual components, but many people (myself included) by a kit from this reseller:

http://www.murphskits.com/catalog/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=64&products_id=369

... that includes a control pad. I don't believe the control pad I received from Murphs is actually a Rostra product.

I can't speak to any potential AU vs US differences.

Good luck with your install!

Just an update here...

Unfortunately, my replacement control pad did not solve my issue. I've since pulled the wiring harness out of the main CC unit and verified 12V on the hot wire. As this was the only explanation offered to why the LED would not light, I attempted to contact both my reseller (murphskits.com) and the manufacturer (Rostra).

Murphs did not respond to my email from 12 days ago. Rostra did not respond to my email from about a week ago. I called Rostra today and spoke with someone who said they cannot troubleshoot motorcycle applications at all, end of story, call your reseller. So now I've called Murphs, where I get a message that I can't leave a message and I need to send an email. I leave a voice message anyway, and send another email. What do you think are the odds that I get a response? Strange how they have no trouble processing communications with credit card numbers in them...

At this point, I'm going to reassemble the bike and see if my local mechanic can figure anything out. More money down the drain probably. Unfortunately, I expect I'll be using my right wrist for cruise control on the trip to Colorado in two weeks.
