Re: hard down shifting

To test the the dry pivot... shoot a bit of WD-40 in the pivot. Guarantee it will shift but...

Lube the shifter lever pivot. You need to remove the pivot bolt, clean it, lube it with water resistant grease, and reinstall it.

hard or no down shifting after a long ride, won"t even down shift after stopping
On mine, after I stop, if it is hard to get into a lower gear, I just keep a slight down pressure on the shifter and let out the clutch slowly. It will eventually drop into gear (on mine, anyway). Then pull in the clutch again.

The thread titled " Problems shifting" is a stickie in the Technical section.

It's the first thing to pop up when doing a search.

Maybe we should take a survey on how many people on this forum know of this issue and how to trouble shoot it? ::020::
So far a few besides me, and I found out by reading another post on the same subject. ::003::

Hey CW, how about starting a sticky about known 'issues' and solutions for those, that way, newbies can just find out about these before they arise, could be a first, letting people know about the 'problems' that the S10 has, not a big secret like other sites, until you bought the buy and find out the hard way, just my opinion.

Or maybe a search option would be nice...

Re: hard down shifting

For you folks who have been members for a longer time, each time a new member signs on now, we send them an email with a couple of basics. One is that you get more out of the forum if you are involved, so I am not criticizing the OP and am glad he posted to be part of the community. Another thing in the email is to point out that the search function works well here and that since the model has been sold for 5+ years, the tech issues and common modifications are very well known and documented.

Hey, if a guy neglecting to search is our biggest problem then it's a pretty darned good day. My bad for expressing frustration. Rock on!

;)

I'm new here and usually go to the "Home" section to see what's recently talked about. (I have used the search here and it is a great one. A lot of sites' search function just tires you out).

Thanks to the suggestions here, I sprayed a little WD-40 on my linkage and it was like a miracle!

I'll properly grease it this weekend.

Good to hear itlives. The first time this happened to me I was half way to Las Vegas. Turned around and went home then caught a flight to LV. Oh the shame on my face when I returned home to try the WD-40.

A couple day ago FireFighter showed me an adjustable shifter that could prevent this from happening. The adjustable has a nylon bushing that is fitted to the pivot shaft.

It amazes me at how many different things someone will come with to separate us from our money! My next purchase will be some crash bars. I came the closest to dropping her yesterday when I stalled at a four-way stop - it was the first time I stalled it.

And it feels like your about to drop a full size side by side refrigerator freezer doesn't it? ???
I had mine slide out from under me on two trails and when it hit the ground sliding ten feet in front of me I was freaking on how fast this bike hits the ground moving.
No doubt about it it's a heavy beast when things get out of your control! :'(

Yes it does. A full-size frfidge full of frozen frozey things!

I hope I never drop the fat lady! On a trail wouldn't be so bad though - is expected.
On the road in an intersection is instant embarrassed!
Funny how you (I) think of pride before actual damage!

Re: hard down shifting

thanks for the advice. the hard shifting started after about 3000 miles { 6 days} on a long trip , had oil changed but it still was hard to shift down. But after a day of regular riding {barstow to san diego thru big bear } it was fine again, maybe it's going 100 miles with out shifting that caused it, thanks jim.

Thanks for the original post and pictures. Just came back from a 600 mile ride through the Smokies and on the last 60 miles I couldn't downshift anymore. Took me a little while to figure out how to "nudge" the shifter up between downshifts so it would re-engage. Will follow your instructions and lube the bolts. BTW - my bike has 7,800 miles, so I guess I should have done this at the 6,000 mile service interval.

Good reminder. I just returned from a 1,200 trip. The last two days had a lot of rain and backroads can be dirty. Will give the Tenere a on year birthday present... remove and clean the shifter bushing, reinstall, ride.

You should have come over https://goo.gl/maps/h5jBeDDY8xx . You are always welcome. You would have enjoyed the CA-36 and really enjoyed all the surrounding roads of all surfaces.
