Diapason has already responded to direct questions about that by saying they DO send that info to Yamaha for the purpose of maintaining the waranty...that's what would 'make people think' that. 8) No chicken little theories or speculation going on here. I know this is a long thread, but the information is already there Their development guys work in consultation with Yamaha...I think that's a good thing. ;) ...but that doesn't mean I'm all 'chicken little' regarding the other two outfits either. ;D
::026:: ::008:: who gives a shit about the warranty ::26:: mines finished in april anyway

If you want 0% risc, do not ride a motorbike, or if you do, keep it stock. Even another exhaust can void warranty, like a PC V does, etc....

i dont think the flash voids any warranty, i think its more to do with statistics, maybe yamaha would like to see firstly how many bikes get flashed, (because we are not happy with power output), and reliability after the flash,

In a presonal email to me Tosco (from Diapason) has confirmed to me that warranty is intact after the Diapason Flash, and that the Flash was develeoped in conjunction with Yamaha. Yamaha is fully aware and are informed on the Diapason flash.

I have also received written (e-mail) statement from Motoshop that warranty is maintained. I was also recently doing some google translation of the Italien Tenere forum and they were discussing the off-the-road.de alternative. Tosco replies and makes point that OTR.de flash wil not maintain Yamaha warranty. When I spoke to Daniel Palmqvist here in Sweden about ECU Unleashed flash he clearly stated that Yamaha warranty would be voided if anyone found out about it. Sorry for repeating myself on the last point there. So as far as I am concerned we only have one flash vendor who states explicitly that Yamaha warranty is maintained. Diapason/Motoshop.

For those that are curious - I just had my R1 ECU flashed by Jett Tuning. They were the first dealer for Garage Endeavors (the folks who were first to "crack" the Yamaha sport bike ECUs. It came back with the same mileage, and works fine (at least it starts, there is still snow on the ground in Omaha). I asked if they will be doing a S10 flash and they said most likely.

Do we have a Diapason in the US yet ? Does anyone know if the 'can' flash a US ECM? Do they claim the same results as the Euro flash?
I'm new here so don't flame me ! :D

Rode a few more miles last night to a Two Wheeled Texan's gathering and back.

Very impressed with the new found performance the flash has Unleashed. The bike fuels better every where and is a hoot to ride. Pulls a lot harder in the lower gears and is a lot snappier everywhere. I can really feel the difference in how it pulls when rolling on the throttle at around 4K RPM, confirming what the posted dyno charts that have been showing.

Don't have any feel for gas mileage yet. Right now it seems to be pretty poor, but I am sure that is a direct result of my right wrist testing out the new flash. What little is left of my Tourance EXP seems to be melting off very quickly.

:D You funny.... :D I know sportrider tried, I have also heard there where another one or two going over.. Ive read EVERY PAGE.. ::26:: and I dont remember a US owner that has gotten a Diapason in there bike yet....

VIN numbers: Not sure if this is similar but if own a Diesel pick up truck and you wanted to down load a custom tune to the ECM you have to enter in the VIN of the truck.. All of these units are a hand held 'type' device. Several years ago you had to manually enter in the VIN to down load the new 'hot rod' soft ware. In the last year or two the new 'hot rod computers' will down load the VIN and then on the LCD screen ask if this is your VIN to this vehicle.. You answer 'yes' and then it will allow you continue to flash your diesel truck computer. Unlike the motorcycle, the hand held unit is installed in the truck for 'gauges' or is typically kept in the truck in case you want to flash it to another tune...
With this being said about the Diesel trucks, the VIN's are not being sent back to the manufacture. I have a feeling that the use of the VIN is to 'enter' the ECM, almost like a electronic "key"... Each ECM knows its VIN, you need to know the VIN to enter its brain...
IMOP, I dont think that these companies are sending Yamaha any info about the VIN, Etc... I know that Diapason claims they are but im still dubious about that claim. Even if they do, Ive been told by Yamaha US that it has no effect on warranty..

Something to chew on that I would like to ask the guys with the flash... I know that I run the (mid) grade fuel all the time and there has been no issues at all. I have also used the low grade in a jam where I could not buy anything else. I bought this bike to ride to Alaska / Mexico / South America. We all know that there is some really sketchy fuel quality down there.. Ive spoke to several Super Tenere owners that are really doing there home work on the flash's. They have confirmed (and read on this post) that many / all the companies are altering the timing. This is great and exciting, with the correct fuel it will work 100%... Has anyone with a flash tried a lower grade fuel ? I would like to get the flash performed by one of these business one day but I wont be getting this service if it means I cant ride the bike where I want too, the whole reason for buying the bike. ::008:: Anyone willing to try a few gallons of 'low' octane fuel? OF COURSE I would do my own test if I had the flash performed ::025::

Im sure people know that Yamaha has a 'factory'ish' after market ECM they sell for the R* / R6 / R1.. Has anyone come across any info that they might offer a "off road" ECM for the Super Tenere ? Ive got a few feelers out, I suspect they will... ::017::

Power and Torque experience sounds good, thanks!

I don't care too much about fuel efficiency if the bike goes like a rocket, but would certainly hope that at a steady speed of, say 120km/h, the efficiency would be similar to pre-flash? My S10 has done over 450km on the open road between refueling

Warranty is being voided is a rather broad statement. I would agree that the warranty on the ECU is voided. But when was the last time any remembers a modern ECU failing? The risk is probably pretty low of having a problem. As far as voiding the warranty of the whole bike, that is crazy. Yamaha would have to prove that the ECU caused the failure. Say you had a wheel bearing fail in the warranty period. Warranty on the wheel bearing is not going to be voided because the ECU was flashed.

what if someone were to buy a spare ECU and send that for a flash? How would this process work then?

I would agree that steady state speeds on the highway should yield similar fuel economy to the stock ECU programming.

If you go the ECU Unleashed route why would you need a spare? I shipped mine last Monday and had it back and was riding the bike on Thursday night.

I work for a manufacturer of engine driven products and engines. I can assure you that if you have an engine failure, the claim would be declined if the reflash is known. Not sure how Yamaha controls work, our service tools can download a file from the ECM and it likely would show the changes if Yamaha supports this same capability.

The motorcycle world is different than the other fields, your dealer is more committed to you and almost every employee of the dealership is an enthusiast, it's more than a pay check. I am confident my dealer would have my back.

That said, if my ECM comes back with a pretty sticker announcing to the world it has been tampered with, I plan to remove it!

If a pretty sticker comes in the box, I'll stick it on the beer fridge.

I am sure Yamaha would try to wriggle out of warranty claims if they know the unit has been tampered with, I know some ECU's have a checksum (hash) and this can give away when an ECU has been altered, some very clever tuning outfits can re-write these to match again and thereby stop an alert when the dealer plugs in, I have come across this with cars, but don't know for sure about the Tenere, but in this day and age it is likely Yamaha could easily tell, not so sure about dealers, the bike world is still a way off the car world when it comes to plug in diagnostics and such like Although BMW and Triumph are quite into this stuff)

The point is Yamaha can't just void a warranty because you have done something they don't like, certainly UK laws are not written by Yamaha, so if something breaks that should legally be covered the onus is actually on Yamaha to prove your reflash caused it, although obviously this can be a real ball ache as if they declined a claim you would have to take them to court (or at least be prepared to) and you could lose, but I think for the most part unless the fault was obviously caused by your mod you would get a result.

In the UK the sale of goods act covers motor vehicles and the term "fit for purpose" means just that, you would not expact a bike to fall apart or go wrong when almost new (i.e. in the warranty period) and if it does it is most likely not "fit for purpose", having explored this avenue when having warranty issues on a new bike I learned a lot (Luckily for me through a "friendly" barrister who provided council FOC)
it was amazing how quickly people who had previously not given a stuff about my issues moved when they were asked to provide all further correspondance to said barrister.

I still go with the ::021:: theory.

Although definately think the fridge is the place for a Diapson sticker, espeically in the UK where as well as warranty issues you have the potential for accident claims to be accredited to your mods, I have no idea how a remap would make my bike harder to see, but you can bet some arsehole from the drivers insurer will try to blame your reflash for his client twatting you off!

In the US Yamaha would have to directly link any failure to the modification to decline coverage, however in the event of an engine failure that linkage would be apparent.

I am not going to concern myself, my ECM is at AF1 right now and I have the YES coverage, so a total of 5 years to "worry". If I have something happen I am concerned about, I'll ship it back down and get the booger un-flashed. But I already discussed some mods with my dealer and the impact on warranty. His response was not to worry, we are your dealer and you are our customer. For Yamaha to become engaged directly it would have to be something truly out of the ordinary.

I just cant wait to ride it, I am jealous of SIMMONS1 and the others that have had the chance to experience it.
