I'm looking for feedback on if I should add a dedicated motorcycle camping board. I personally like doing it, even though I never seem to get out as much as I'd like.

So how does everybody else feel about it? If enough folks are into it, I'll throw a new dedicated board up for it.

I've used Ted Sherpa's facilities, but never carried the camping gear with me. Ted makes his rounds to various Rally's and provides a tent, air mattress, sleeping bag and a fold up chair, not to mention coffee in the morning and a charging station for your cell phone.
I think it's a great deal for 3 days @~100.00.

I think it would be good to have a camping section. I'd be interested in hearing how people pack and land at campsites throughout the country.

Camping , well, depends what classifies as camping. Now my ideal is going CABIN to CABIN around the country. We have done it many times. The bad part is planning far in advance to get the cabins for certain. The good part is knowing how they will be and the amenities that are included.

Been camping off the bike for years, my favorite way to travel. Camping gives us a lot of flexibility, we ride till the sun is about down then look for a place to throw out a tent. All campsites are good, it's just somes better than others :^) We camp on BLM and USFS ground a lot, free is a good price.

I don’t camp. On the road I stay at those budget inns, which seem to be most everywhere. But that doesn’t mean I’m not interested in what my motorcycling friends are doing. If that’s camping, I’m interested. A lot of good topics and trip reports arise from motorcycle camping adventures.

Yeah, I would like to see a camping board. It may not get used all that much, but it would make it easier for us to find info when needed.

I did this once. At one of the first STOC events in North Carolina. I camped a lot as a yougin with the Boy Scouts and not much since. Not my cup of tea I suppose.

I think it would be a good idea.

Because I camp a lot less at the moment than I would want to, I would really like the best cheap stuff reviews.

I could buy a decent $60.00 tent and frankly as long as it works well for at least 4 trips (probably over 2 years) I don't care.
I'll buy another one with the money I saved not staying in hotels.

The other thing I like about MC based camping forums is the fact that weight is not the be all and end all of a decision.

Hiking has similar parameters as far as packing efficiency goes but weight is less of an issue with an MC, unless you want to unload at the end and hike.

So it would be valuable IMO.

Cheers
Graham

A big part of the fun of Motorcycle/Touring Camping on an adventure bike is getting all the gear! Like farkling all over again!!
Light, Comfortable, Convenient, etc. is a lot of fun picking all the stuff. Plus everyone has their opinion and advice for what is best. Just ask me......

Tend to alternate between hotels and camping on a trip. If I'm going to hang around an area I always camp. Have gone with cheap tents with no real problems. Did spring for a Kermit chair after my old el cheapo finally died. The Kermit is pricey but much smaller and very well made. Use a Peak coleman stove (about 10yrs old now) and usually buy chunks o' flesh to grill on the fire. To me, one of the great parts of the day after a ride is to sit around the fire with some libations and re-hash the day/ride/places and roads we've seen..... :)

So (as to the original question... :D) yes a camping thread would be great!!

That nails it for me. Nothing like sitting around having some beverages until everybody goes into shutdown mode and stumbles off to the tents. I usually hate myself to varying degrees the next morning but I just can't give up the night.

This is just how I feel about camping with biking. The most scenic camping is remote off the main roads.

Interesting timing, I posted that camping thread this morning. Got to thinking about the thread on this site and most were about the bike or things for the bike. I have been thinking a lot about how I am going to use this very versitile machine. Yes I am all for a camping thread... how we can load this bike, stuff to take, camping trip plans and reports. Let's talk :D

Glad to see the new Camping category. I enjoy it, but haven't been doing as much as I would like since there are so many mountains close by, we go do 100+ miles and/or 8 - 10 hours of riding in the mountains then are home for the night. This year, I've committed to doing more overnighters even if that means riding out one afternoon and riding back the next morning. There is something about spending the night out that makes it such a different trip, even if the hours in the saddle or miles under your tires are fewer.

My wife switched from street-only riding to dual sporting last year and I also finally talked her into camping for the first time in here LIFE last year on a float trip. I made it clear to everyone that if she wasn't comfortable and didn't have a great camping experience, it would be the last time she would go. Needless to say she had a blast and now is asking me when we are going to take the bikes and go camping this year. ;D

Camping is all I do... can't stand hotels now... they don't let you build fires... well, they don't like it when you do anyway.

That's great that she's into these things and enjoys them. Well done, my friend! I've pretty much decided my wife is never getting on my bike, but we do go camping as a family.
