The only down side I can see with this bike is that it seems to be octane and or corn sensitive. I notice this after the motor is warm and blip the throttle off idle.
I can get a ping and stall at times at stop signs and lights before taking off.

I have a habit of a blip of the throttle just at take off (my style) and have had this happen at least 2-3 times per tank full. Sometimes it recovers and about 2 out of 3 times it will ping cough and die.

I filled up this weekend in Bryan Texas on a trip and the thing ran perfect until I filled up in Baytown on the way home and it started doing it again.

Has anyone had a similar problem

Unfortunately fuel quality is a factor.

What's up these days? My 2003 Chevy Tahoe has a tractor motor-doesn't matter.

The stuff that goes into a high performance motor , does.

Me too.
And mine has been fed since new with non oxy (no ethanol) premium. I also have the flat spot off idle reported in another thread. I think it is a bit too lean down low.

has happened to me twice. Ping is not a nice sound....

overall, most of the fuel injected bikes I've had have had off-idle issues - mostly abrupt response both off and on

I think my first fuel injected bike was 2001 GSXR1000.......had a few inadvertant inputs going over bumps.

My 2008 CBR1000RR took ALOT of getting used to & must be very careful getting back on throttle in corners.

The Super Tenere (and my 2004 R1) are gems........it doesnt get much better (although my 2009 HD Road King is pretty smooth).......doesn't explain the "ping", but my technique has been adjusted & ping hasn't happened again.

I had a bit of us on my FJR. Sometimes just raising your idle speed a small amount makes all the difference in eliminating the slight stumble.

Not yet!
I will on the next fill up and see what happens. What brand of additive do you recommend Jaxon? Many to choose from and I am sure some boost it more than others.

If that doesn’t work, I think I will try what Rod recommended on the Idle up a tad thing. I have had this same thing happen on my FJR a few times too. (Thanks Rod)

Well I fixed the problem. STP octane booster. :)

I rode close to 250 miles today and did not have one ping or stumble. This stuff worked. It is good for about 4 tank fills. Easy...1/4 of bottle each fill up.

I am one happy camper. I can't complain about a thing with this bike now except not enough ride time. :(

This work stuff keeps getting in the way of my play time. :'(

93 octane premium wasn't enough? You had to boost it even further? ???
I always fill with 93 but some stations seem to be worse than others on the octane or corn level. I mostly noticed this condition in the heat of the day. It didn't happen today at all even with a 106 deg intake temp. and 2 fill up's 8)

Cool. Since you're using octane booster, could you get away with just filling up with regular?
I read something (forget where) that not all octane boosters are the same and some don't boost all that much. Boosting from regular is difficult without the really good stuff (ie, $$$). And that STP was at the bottom of useful octane boosters during a test. An Internet search on "octane boosters" will provide some interesting hits.

You are right about STP on the low end of boosters but looks like Lucas is much better.

Just my opinion, but I doubt this problem would be affected by octane booster. Doesn't make technical sense. There are a lot of variables involved here and I'd bet that something else changed, possibly the engine just needed more miles. Regardless, glad the problem is solved.

I understand what you are saying Mark, but I can tell you for sure It is associated with fuel and or quality at least with my bike anyway. If my bike has learned then it has forgot it did every time except the fillup in Bryan and the two in a row with STP boost.

I am going to switch to Lucas from STP and see if the Lucas works too. In cooler weather I may not need the boost but for now I am going to stick with it.

It is hot as Hell right now In Texas. :(

It would be interesting to discontinue the additives for a tank or two and see if the behavior comes back too. My bet it won't, but you never know without trying it.

Good Idea.

I will try it on the next tank full at the same Exxon station in town that I know It did it before to just see before I purchase the Lucas.

I thought I was the only one having this problem - apparently not - still breaking in the S10 and brought it back to the dealer to see if there was anything wrong with the motor. They tried another S10 that was just about to go to a new owner and it did the same thing - they said not to worry - but it was documented.
Will try the STP or Lucas octane booster and hope this will eliminate the problem.
Thanks for sharing
