I’ve signed having been caught twice in 2 years. I was doing 26mph the first time and paid up to do a speed awareness course to save putting points on my licence and the second time, I was allegedly doing 25mph, (I am sure I was below 20th as I was using the speed limiter function in my car), but I was fined £100.00 and collected 3 points on my licence.

Back in the day, I would even stop anybody unless they were 14mph over the posted. And I still stayed busy. Our judge wouldn't even accept anything less than 10 over the posted.

The issue, here at least, is not the accident caused by someone fully entitled, competent and sober exceeding the speed limit, it’s the drunk/drugged up/thieving kids travelling at excessive speeds (and always will) that kill and maim and no reduction in speed limit will ever change that. Reducing speed limits is a blunt, unimaginative tool.

Speed, by itself, rarely is the cause of fatal crashes. But there are too many outside influences on the road to allow everyone to just go as fast as they want. Too many drivers failing to yield the right of way, changing lanes without signaling or suddenly slowing/stopping to go fast without negative results.

I presume these are town/villages 20mph limits? Is it common and throughout Wales? Is it enforced by average speed cameras, static or mobile cameras, or a mix?

The 'normal' speed limit in Wales is currently 30mph, we already have 20mph around schools and other built up areas but from the 17th September the 30 will be dropped to 20 unless a separate sigb is in place.

There are other changes too, we are seeing more and more 40 and 50mph limits replacing the 60's, it's nothing short of ridiculous.

Rob is right, the problem is that there are some very fine roads in Wales, (fine roads are also available in other countries too), that are very accessible, but they have been popularised by TV programmes such as Top Gear and 5th Gear and the like. So, because of accidents and indiscriminate driving practises, the speed limits on these roads have dropped from 60mph to 50mph, 40mph and even 30mph on some roads. The by-pass near me had a 60mph limit for years, but recently, there have been a number of fatalities and, especially on weekends, motorcycles literally flying up and down the road in between 2 way traffic. The limit is now 40mph and average sped cameras are being installed. The result of this is we are now treated to motorcycles riding at high speeds pulling wheelies through our villages here!

From your description bikers are already speeding in relation to the current speed limit. Will reducing it further stop them from doing so?

Speeders are gonna speed. Whether it's against the law or not. Out in West Texas the posted limit is 80mph. There's a section between Austin and San Antonio that the limit is 85mph. Even I-20 & I-30 through Ft. Worth and Dallas is posted at 70mph. The only time that crashes are plentiful is rush hours in the morning and evening, and it's not because of speed; too much congestion.

I see what you mean, I went through loads of 20mph village/town speed limits over the past couple of days.

Reducing speed is a road policing tool that no sane person can argue with. I'm sorry, it makes sense,
True but when its really sneaky and its in places which are more about revenue collection than safety then im not for it.
Thats why i like the Highlands and the places i ride in Wales. I dont take much notice of the speed i just ride how i like. Freedom is what its all about.

"Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose, and nothin' ain't worth nothin' but it's free" from the song Me and Bobby McGee sung by by Janis Joplin (written by Kris Kristofferson/Fred Foster).

To be honest we are going in the wrong direction over here with the tech survielance. Especially facial recognition. I simply can not trust people with other peoples data. It seems like we are more interested im making money from motorists than catching criminals. Rant over.

My dad used to play that song, although I think it was the version by Charlie Rich or Pride?

Labour MP Mark Drakeford doing his best to ruin Wales.Labour are going to lose a lot of votes in Wales over this.I rode around the Highlands of Scotland for a week this year and did not see any camera vans. Unfortunately we have lots of them in North Wales raking in thousands of pounds every day from reckless riders/drivers pottering along at 36 mph.
