Oil change sticker shock...

Picked up the items required to do the first service on my Super Tenere and was shocked at the prices the dealer charged for the supplies. The Yamaha semi-synthetic 10W50 oil was $84CAD for four liters ($21CAD ea) and the oil filter was $21.97CAD. That's $14.79USD and $15.47USD respectively for a total of $105.97CAD/$74.63USD. Does this seem out of line? The one oil I expected to be expensive was for the hypoid gearbox and it was only $14.08CAD. On my Vstrom the Suzuki filters were $12CAD and 5 liters of Rotella T6 is $40CAD.

Out of curiosity I cut apart the filter to see how well a $22 filter was made. It was a little disappointing. The filter doesn't even have end caps, just what appears to be hot-glue. Even FRAM filters have cardboard circles. The Baldwin filters I use on Kubota and JD equipment have metal media caps - maybe I'll switch to those.

I normally just use the regular 10w-40 Yamalube. I think it is around $32 for 4 litres. No way I am paying $21/litre, that is just robbery. Motul full syn is probably cheaper than that.

Shell Rotella 5 40 synthetic. Mahle oil filter are your friends. You are close to the boarder. The oil is available in a 4 qhart jug at walmart. $20 US dollars. There are filters sold there that will work. Perhaps some others will edify us. Make a run and stock up.
Thanks for the information on the Mahle filters. I will definitely look into getting some OC575 filters.

Mahle filter and either Rotella T or Delo 15-40. Lucky [!] for me, Tenere and FJR take the same filter so I stock up once a year from Rock Auto.

My dealer has 10w-50 Yamalube for $8.99/qt. I think the filter is $10. IIRC, it was about $65ish for the kit.

Seems most dealers believe they can mark up parts well over list price, and maintenance items such as oil ect are even worse on the mark up. The dealer I bought the Goldwing from was 300% list price on things such as oil, antifreeze ect. Needless to say, that didn't pan out well over the long term as no return customers and word spreads quickly. Now as with everything here in Colorado, that dealer is closed and another 300 unit apartment complex is there instead. Can never have too many apartments.

I run and recommend:

Rotella T6 5-40 About $20

with a Mobil 1 M1-108 filter About $10

Best price for pick up is Wal-Mart on both items (for me).

(My local store) Wal-Mart has Amped up there buying power with Mobil 1. They have WAY MORE oil and filter choices now, and my local Auto-Zone has stopped carrying a lot of Mobil 1 products.

**Just FYI, if you don't run a skid plate or you might have a skid plate that will allow it; The Mobil 1 M1-110 is a little longer and you get more internal filter for the same price as the 108. I believe both of these filters are part of there 'long life' series of oils and filters to run 20K miles. I run my Tenere normally 7-8-9K miles on each oil change. It could easily go 10+++K miles with the info Ive gotten from oil analysis. The guy cracked up when I said I changed at 8-9K.

OK, that's what I suspected. I'm willing to pay a fair price for items and I understand that dealerships have rent and labour to pay but this is ridiculous. As you say, word gets around. I guess this is why my local independent motorcycle shop is always booked solid. I was going to baby this bike and feed it only the recommended fluids, filters and dealer service but now I think I will just go back to my V-Strom model of doing most everything myself using filters and fluids based on experience and consensus and only take it back to the dealer for any recalls. Money is hard enough to come by - no need to give it away.

I paid 42$ tx inc. for a Yam Lube 10w40 at my dealer and 17,90$ for the filter. He warn me that it goes up a little so maybe I’ll try something that fit (napa or mobil) . Normaly I use Yamalube because its easier to get around my place and I think the price is fair . Or Motul 5100(or 5700..?) same price for the jug. The Walmart near my place don’t stock automotive product like in states. And I think the T6 at the Shell truck is overpriced.

Another Rotella user here and have used a lot of Mobile 1 even if it doesn't have the right JASO MA/MA2.

Two things to watch for on filters:
#1. MAKE SURE to look at the bottom of the filter before installation. Some have a convex bottom which will prevent the filter from seating.

#2. If you have a skid plate like most of us, longer filters may be too long and the plate will be pressed against the filter end.

More info is in this thread:

And of course:

o_O So. . . . M108. . . . or M108a? There has to be a difference. . . . the M108 is $3 more, although it looks the same.
I’ve used the 108 for about 19 years. The last few filters I’ve bought are the 108A. Other than the out side sticker, they look exactly the same to me. The sticker now says good for 20K miles. Or something similar.
