I have been on BMWs for 30+ years and over 200,000 miles but there is a high likelihood that the replacement for my current bike will be a Yamaha. My current rides are a 2002 BMW R1150R that recently turned over 86,000 miles and a Yamaha WR250R. I entered the dual sport riding game rather late in life and what has piqued my interest in Yamaha for a street bike was replacing my first dual sport bike (a Suzuki DR650) with a WR250R. It is a very well put together bike and has been a hoot to ride.
I thought the Yamaha FJ-09 was going to be the replacement, with the Super Tenere 2nd but after going out west from Western NC a month ago and covering almost 6,000 miles in 15 days, I think the Super Ten might have returned to 1st place. Trips like I just did sound perfect for the bike, with mountain roads and a few FS gravel roads thrown in. I think it would pair nicely with the WR.
Although the BMWs have served me well over the years, all 4 major issues I have ever had were all on the current bike and in researching and talking to others, I just don't think the current crop of BMWs are as reliable as they were in the past. My trust level is low. Besides, I can buy a leftover '15 Super Ten and have enough left over from the price of a new GS to add a FZ-07! , although I am not sure the wife will buy that argument!
Not sure when I am going to replace the R1150R but joined so I could ask some questions and get some info on the bike from actual riders. So you might see me popping up in some forum discussions picking the collective's brains.
