I have been on BMWs for 30+ years and over 200,000 miles but there is a high likelihood that the replacement for my current bike will be a Yamaha. My current rides are a 2002 BMW R1150R that recently turned over 86,000 miles and a Yamaha WR250R. I entered the dual sport riding game rather late in life and what has piqued my interest in Yamaha for a street bike was replacing my first dual sport bike (a Suzuki DR650) with a WR250R. It is a very well put together bike and has been a hoot to ride.

I thought the Yamaha FJ-09 was going to be the replacement, with the Super Tenere 2nd but after going out west from Western NC a month ago and covering almost 6,000 miles in 15 days, I think the Super Ten might have returned to 1st place. Trips like I just did sound perfect for the bike, with mountain roads and a few FS gravel roads thrown in. I think it would pair nicely with the WR.

Although the BMWs have served me well over the years, all 4 major issues I have ever had were all on the current bike and in researching and talking to others, I just don't think the current crop of BMWs are as reliable as they were in the past. My trust level is low. Besides, I can buy a leftover '15 Super Ten and have enough left over from the price of a new GS to add a FZ-07! :) , although I am not sure the wife will buy that argument!

Not sure when I am going to replace the R1150R but joined so I could ask some questions and get some info on the bike from actual riders. So you might see me popping up in some forum discussions picking the collective's brains.

::004:: from Oklahoma. Talking about late in life, I think the average age of a Tenere rider is over 50....

Wncrider... Welcome from Morganton, NC just down the road from you! I'm on my second Tenere' and loving it. I had a 2012 that I put 80k on and wanted the ES so now I ride a 2014ES. this past July I rode an FJ09 around the Alps for 20 days. It is a fantastic bike. The Tenere' is just a bit better for a long distance road bike. But the FJ09 is so nice and light in the curves it is exceptional! I'm of an age where lighter is better. I'm hoping to put an FJ in my garage... hoping!!!!
Being that you are only 65 miles away we should ride!

Hi and welcome. I too had a beemer. Mine was a 2000 R1100R. I chose the Super T over the other adventure bikes because it rode so nice like the beemer. I looked at the GS also but like you thought the Yamaha was so much more bang for the buck and is pretty much bullet proof. You won't be disappointed.

Ride On!

Brick - technically, I am a Knobbie too but since I seldom come down to breakfast, you wouldn't know it. :( The club used to help me when I managed the end point for the Ride for Kids, so I have come down a few times for breakfast and rides.

Edited to add that the last time I showed up at a Knobbies breakfast, there were 3 Super Teneres there, ridden by former BMW riders! :) The seed was planted!
