Hello everyone,

Just got myself a 2014 Tenere ES. It's only 2 weeks old but I have already run 6000 KMS on it!! How come??? Well this is the story.....

I used to ride a 2012 BMW F650GS twin (800cc) until April 2014. Thought of upgrading the bike for a planned trip to Los Angeles this July and a cross country trip in 2015. I started researching on a suitable 'Touring' bike and finally bought the supposedly'best in the market' a fully loaded 2014 BMW R1200RT Liquid Cooled. As most of you may have read, all 2014 BMW R1200RT owners received a "Do not ride" notice on June 5th and all bikes have been grounded globally since then due to an issue with the rear electronic suspension unit.

After almost one month's silence, BMW finally gave a few options to the owners which included a buy-back option. Recall repair would take 3 months at least. Given my urgency I took the buy back option and returned the RT for full cash refund. I had one week to decide on a new bike in preparation for the LA trip.

I was done with BMWs and touring bikes by then and decided to return to adventure bikes again. I had narrowed down my options to KTM 1190, Triumph Explorer, and vstrom 1000. Tenere was not in my radar as I had assumed it was too tall for my 29" inseam. But I was surprised when I tested it. Both KTM and the Vstrom were in fact had taller seats than the Tenere.

The Tenere had all I wanted including the long awaited 'peace of mind' experience. (Beamers gave me nightmares whenever I had to visit the dealer). The s10 also looked better ('mean and manly' like my wife said) and had a better finish. More importantly, it's a Yamaha. So you can't to go wrong I guess?

I bought it instantly and had 3 days to break it in, complete the first service and embark on a 9 day/5000 km journey through Pacific Coast HWY (101 and 1) all the way upto LA and then back through Eastern California, Nevada and Eastern/Northern Oregon. I didn't have any time to add any accessories other than the two OEM panniers , wind deflectors and a GPS. The bike did exceptionally well throughout the journey and absolutely had no issues at all. The power was adequate for my kind of riding and the wind/weather protection was excellent. Leaning the bike on twisties didn't feel as crisp and steady as a Beamer, but it did better when it came to tight maneuvers and rough roads.

My only gripe was the braking power. I may have been spoilt using Brembo's on Beamers, but I think the brakes are weak on the S10 even in Japanese standards. The rotors also produced a 'hiss' sound each time I hit the front brakes. Is this normal? That's what the dealer said. Are there any aftermarket brake upgrades available? Do you think steel breaded hoses would help improve braking? Appreciate your thoughts.

I think the Tenere is a keeper. I have decided to do the cross Canada trip on it next year. So its time to start the farkling. Any mandatory add ons or upgrades I should know about? Please let me know. (I will be riding 80/20 on/off road)

Thanks in advance for your support.

Congrats on the bike. There are many threads here on farkles. One of the nice things about the bike is the ability to tailor it to your needs. I have a 2013 and have not noticed a problem with the brakes and I come from a BMW and Aprilia background. There have been those that have switched out the oem brake pads for ones with a more aggressive compound.

Welcome! Good story. Read the reviews here before going crazy and spending money on farkles.
Thanks. A good skid plate and engine crash bars seem to be next priority for me. Almost ordered the OEM ones. Will read reviews and decide.

Thanks. Could be just my bike, but the brakes definitely have a problem. Apart from the weak stopping power, the sound it produces reminds me of engine (muffled) brakes used on larger vehicles. I have never heard such noise in any of the bikes I have used in the past 20 years. Hoping to talk to the dealer again during the weekend.

Thanks. Agree. I would not have so much fun and peace of mind had I done the LA trip on my Beamer.

Welcome from neighbours across the straight. A nice introduction post there.
Brakes on my 2012 make the same noise from day one. The wave rotors perhaps. I don't even hear it any more. As far as stopping power pretty good but definitely not brembo's. Maybe they have changed the pad material on the 14's.
Enjoy the new bike

Welcome to the forum. Great first post.

My wife & I got home Friday from a similar trip down the PCH to San Diego and back home by Lake Tahoe, McCall Idaho, Montana and Waterton/Glacier National Parks. 7,300 kms of faultless performance. It's a great bike.

Oh, if I only had a dollar for every time someone has started the thread with "I used to have a bmw..."

Well welcome to the wonderful world of the Super Tenere and all the really decent people that ride them. Hope you'll come down to Seattle and ride with us Yanks, look us up on FB under "PNW Super Tenere"; we're over 100+ strong and get together monthly for some decent events...and we're looking for a Canadian representative to invite us up (less all our firearms) to BC for a weekend of mountain riding...maybe you could be that person?

Welcome aboard.

Hello all, just to let you all know that I did a 5200km run on my then one week old Tenere down Pacific Coast upto LA and returned through Nevada back to Canada all in 9 days. The Bike was in stock form and it performed flawlessly all along. I had great fun. This bike is a keeper.

Welcome, Tenerester! Glad you are enjoying the Super Ten so far. I must say, I have not noticed any brake issues with my 2012, except for premature wear of the rear brake pads. There is a thread on this forum about that, and it appears to be a result of the linked braking system (I am not by any means a heavy rear-brake user - quite the opposite.) As far as farkles go, the sky is the limit. I have a Givi sump guard and Givi crash bars on my bike, and together, they afford considerable peace of mind. There are quite a few others available on the market though, so you will just have to see what best meets your needs and pocketbook. ::008::

Cheers,

Bruce

Welcome. Come on down south of the border and ride with some of the Pacific Northwest Super Tenere Owners Group. There is a Facebook page to get information. A ride this weekend in Cle Elum.

I did an adventure training course a few weeks ago and learned that feathering the brakes on the ST is difficult on slow speed maneuvers Seems to be all or none. I had read that as well somewhere.

A big ::004:: from here in the UK. My wife has cousins near you, in Salmon Arm - we really must get over there for a visit.

What a disaster the R1200RT has been. To think I nearly bought one in January. Instead my hard earned went into a 2012 BMW K1600GTSE. The experience with the K16 has been dire too - whatever the warranty might say, nothing can prepare you for the grief that so many failures/problems can cause. Sadly no buy-back with my Lemon - if only we had the law behind us here in the UK, like some States in the USA. So I am now left with a bike I cannot trust, even with it's new gearbox & front suspension - what will fail next. To think this bike cost over 19k sterling new fully optioned, yet was released on a unsuspecting public without being shaken down properly. It really is a disgrace. Those smug sales guys melt away every time I turn up at the Dealer.

Still, the Super Ten seems pretty bullet proof by all accounts. Let's enjoy the ride...... ::001:: ............. KEN

Thanks Jeff. But we had already planned rides to Whistler and Harrison's Hot Springs this weekend. Probably next time. You guys have some great clean roads down there.

Thanks Bruce. I swapped by bike with a BMW F800 GS during a ride with my buddies for a few minutes and only then realized how good the brakes on the Tenere were. Guess it was a just matter of breaking in.
I like Givi products too. Will take a look.
Cheers

Harry
