Sigeye, I sure hope the clutch switch turns out to be the cause of your cruise problem, if it does it would be interesting to have the old one tested to learn if it has a bounce or resistance. If you don't have an analog VOM maybe send it to mebgardner, he has nothing to do now that the dealer is going to fix his bike... <sarcasm>. ;D
I do feel the pain of having to allow the dealer to do the work, I too did all the diagnosis on my bike (after the dealer told me there was nothing wrong) but had to cooperate with the dealer in order to keep the warranty. It all went well for me this time and I have no complaints.

Here is a picture of the old clutch switch diassembled. It is pretty dirty inside but the push switches seem to work ok.

I do have a digital multimeter...can I test with that? Can you guys tell me what to specifically do?

I think you can do a satisfactory resistance check which would find a problem such as gv50 had. You will want to read the resistance across the Yellow/Black and brown wires. The reading should be very low, well below an Ohm. As I recall gv550's was around 9 ohms. I don't think you would be able to detect the "bounce" that mebgardner found with your meter. You really need the needle to be able to see it.

I followed mebgardner's advice and used an analog ohmmeter, never tried my digital VOM.
A digital meter should show any abmormal resistance across the closed contacts, but I doubt you will see a bounce if it exists.
And, the bounce was only noticed when I was moving the brake lever very slowly. With the switches removed from your bike it will be difficult to move the contacts slowly.

Re: My bizarre & seemingly unsolvable cruise control issues...hoping for new ideas.

Didn't get to do the long ride I wanted to today, but I put on another 165 miles with zero cruise control malfunctions! That's 205 miles without an issue after replacing the clutch switch with the new part number.

Remaining hopeful but I still don't feel confident enough to say it is fixed. Just a month ago I had about 450 miles between malfunctions. So as I approach and pass that I will feel more confident.

Fingers crossed!

If it's fixed, I wonder how long before you set it and forget it?
Or, I wonder which comes first.....the baby sleeping all night, or you BELIEVING it's fixed? Lol

Happy for ya, either way.

I've got a good feeling. After what you've been thru I'm hoping you got to the bottom of it. Yamaha R & D should be sending you some tokens of appreciation.

Haha thanks guys. Yeah I feel like I'm so gun shy about believing it is fixed and I hope that feeling goes away, if it is in fact fixed. I have had this issue for roughly 25,000 miles...so I've grown accustomed to it failing at all the most inopportune moments. Hopefully the faith rebuilds much faster!

Still sidelined waiting for Yamaha to approve (or not) warranty claim. Checking with dealer tech daily now. OEM customer service is part of the ownership experience, hmmm?

From my side of the eyeballs, it's very frustrating to me, having the repair part in-hand, and not installing it.

Mebgardener,

Procedures. A close cousin to rules.
No doubt their existence is necessary, but my "outlaw" gene has a native aversion.
I try to keep the battle in the arena of harmless. Lol
The bigger stuff, I just keep my sword sheathed. I'm too old for taking on the authorities. :)

I feel your pain on this aspect. That's why I finally just pulled the trigger and ordered/installed the parts myself. Granted, I'm well out of guaranteed warranty and it was just a 'goodwill' in my case (of which I'm very thankful for).

Sigeye,
I started to go back and re-read parts of this thread just to get confirmation, but I think it will just be easier to ask you since this thread has more twists and turns than Deal's Gap, LOL. Anyway, assuming it is fixed now, ultimately all it was, was the clutch switch? Does that mean that the one that you said you replaced (in your first post) was defective?

Yes sir, that is correct - this is my 2nd installed clutch switch (which was why I didn't quickly circle back to it). The clutch switch I just installed last weekend was a new part number that superseded the original, and I believe that is perhaps a sign that they found a flaw and improved it.

I will keep this post updated as I put on more miles and gain confidence that it is fixed. I'm so used to it failing that I get anxiety every time I use it. Even now while it's working great. I really hope that feeling goes away.

I'm hoping the new and updated clutch switch fixes your bike too.
But..... you'd think if Yamaha knew of a flaw and went to the trouble of updating it with a new part number that their technical service rep would have replaced this first, and certainly before replacing the main harness on their dime.
My bike has a build date of November 2015, I wonder if I have the latest clutch switch? Not likely.

Re: My bizarre & seemingly unsolvable cruise control issues...hoping for new ideas.

Over 300 miles with the new clutch switch now and still zero malfunctions! Planning to put on 400 or more this weekend to continue verifying too. Hard to rack up the miles I used to with Sonora in my life haha... But I wouldn't change a thing.

I am so thankful to all of you that have participated in this thread and have helped contribute with ideas and troubleshooting methods. Even the sympathy has helped! Such a great mix of personalities and technically minded folks on this forum. I am so thankful for all of your input and also to Yamaha for trying to make this right.

Darn good motorcycle and now I finally get to enjoy the icing on the cake again, with cruise working.

If this new p/n clutch switch proves to be the fix, I sure hope that this thread provides value to anyone with similar issues now and in the future. Heck of a lot of great technical info encompassed in this thread.

Keeping my fingers crossed!
