For Sale: 2013 Matte Grey Yamaha Super Tenere. This motorcycle is basically brand new and in excellent condition. Only has 1283 miles and comes with the matte grey color scheme. Recently registered in Arizona with registration good until the fall of 2014, and I have clean title in hand. Existing warranty transfers with the bike. Has never been off the pavement. I am moving to California, and due to emission standards, cannot register this model in that state (49 State). It breaks my heart because this was my dream bike and now I have to sell it. Willing to part with the bike for $13,500 OBO. Will accept reasonable offers. Cash in hand and valid motorcycle driver's license gets you a test ride. Will also accept a cashiers check, with a meeting at a bank of your choice, which can be arranged. I will be back in Scottsdale, AZ from October 11-14, so that is the best time for me to show the bike (Preferably on October 11). Call with questions or to set up a time to see the bike.

Dave (949) 689-9261

Thanks for looking!

...you can register it in Cali once it reaches 7,500miles. Can't you keep it registered somewhere in AZ until you get to that mileage?

Have you verified this in Cali? If I understand it correctly if it is registered in your name when you move you CAN register it in Cali but you can't buy one registered to someone else under 7,500 and transfer it.

Not true. spacemanspiff is correct. 2006 I was going to buy my first used KLR from Maine but it only had 4,000 miles. The seller would not agree to to leave the mileage incomplete on the title. 7500 miles or more makes it a used vehicle.

I get that. My point is he's not a CA resident buying it out of state, it's already registered to him prior to becoming a CA resident.

If I recall correctly (lived in CA for a few years and looked into buying bikes out of state) they impose the mileage rule in part to keep you from flying out of state to make a purchase.

In other words - I *think* it doesn't matter if it's registered to you or not, you need 7500+ miles on it. I could have done a temporary registration in TX.

Just call CA DMV though...they'll tell you what you need to do.

I also vote keep the bike. It's the perfect machine for California. Pay someone here airfare and I bet they'll ride it 6000 miles for ya real quick.

It's registered through fall 2014. Just keep the AZ plate on it and ride it 6218 miles before it expires.

I don't think I could ever move somewhere that wouldn't allow my motorcycle.

How can such a gorgeous state be ran by such anti-freedom nonsense.

A motorcycle that is 100% compliant everywhere else in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, is illegal in California.
They should be embarrassed. Who or what are they protecting from that evil Arizona Tenere?

I know we rednecks are the joke of the world. But you gotta understand, we just have to die and be replaced by folks that can make sense outta that crap.

Sorry for the hijack. Best of luck selling your bike. And hope you have a long and prosperous life in LaLaLand. Geeze.

Thanks for all the great support responses. Unfortunately, I didn't do thorough-enough research and tried to register the bike about a month ago with the CA DMV. They informed me that this is a "49 State" bike and didn't meet CA state emission standards. They also informed me that because it was below 7500 miles, it was considered a new bike and could not meet the loop hole requirement. To add insult to injury, they concluded that because I attempted to register it in CA, the VIN number of this bike is in their DMV system, and I would never be able to register this bike in CA, even after I pass 7500 miles. I received a letter 2 weeks later telling me if I was caught riding this bike in CA, I would be fined. You know it's comical, if everyone in CA rode a motorcycle, there wouldn't be a need for emissions standards.

Again, thank you all for the support. I want to keep the bike, but at this point it's not worth the headache. Please reply to this thread or call/text if you have interest in the bike.

WOW...
I'd try calling a different DMV... Something is wrong....
That's so hard to believe... Holy nightmare...
What happens when a military kid gets moved stations?
I even find it hard to believe there's a thing as a 49 state vehicle anymore... thought they would all be 50 state legal ! I did it in 09 with my G8 GXP and was worried but it's a 50 state car.. still had to get smogged...

Such BS on the 49 state thing, although nothing state/federal government-wise surprises me anymore. I'd try calling the DMV one more time and ask what advfirefighter brought up.

Good luck with sale if it doesn't work out. Nice bike, Dave.

It does not surprise me, California is a disaster. It is a shame, because it is a beautiful state. For example, I just priced a rental car for 5 weeks. The price was around $500 for the rental, and around another $600 in taxes, Really600?
Good luck on your sale, but as others suggested, call around.

There are loopholes for military personnel or incidents where the exempt vehicle can replace a wrecked vehicle from an accident - Neither of which apply to my situation. I even called Yamaha N.A. headquarters (In Orange County, CA) and they confirmed that they and many other moto manufacturers make two versions of motorcycles due to the strict emissions standards in CA. DMV is locked in their position, no budging. Such a shame, a bike like this belongs there like anywhere else.

Thanks again for the support guys. Please tell anyone who may have interest in buying soon to contact me!

<FACE PALM> OMG what a nightmare!
Dave, can you set-up an appointment with a DMV manager? And (calmly) explain that you certainly weren't trying to skirt around any emissions requirements or sales tax issues --just that you are moving from AZ to CA and are trying to get your vehicles registered, one of them just happens to be brand new. I am sure you it goes against their bureaucratic nature, but maybe a plea for some sanity and logic?

I hope you get this sorted --there is some great riding in California!

I hope you get to keep it, SC, but if you don't .... this is a gorgeous bike. I have the same bike ... well, not the SAME bike but it's a grey 2013. Awesome. Just awesome. If it MUST be sold, someone should grab it quick. R ::008::

Want to "sell" it to me? I'll title it in NJ, and then "sell" it back to you. You can put whatever mileage you like on the title.

You cover tax/title/reg and mail.

Unfortunately that is a very true statement and it has happened to friends of mine. Once you attempt to register an "illegal" vehicle in the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia the VIN is flagged in the DMV's system. They want their SMOG requirements met and they want their tax money!!

I believe if you are an out of state resident moving in you should not have a problem registering it.

I believe that is correct. I moved to Kalifornia with a 1 month old car without any problems other than I had to SMOG it, but that was years ago. I would ask the DMV since you are not a CA resident yet. The "new" rule only applies to CA residents, which you are not yet.
