Why oh why do we all get so inflammed about reviews of our bikes that don't match our opinions ?

Doesn't matter what bike you ride, I'm also a member of a TDM site and people on there are getting all flustered about current web based article.

Bottom line is I like and thoroughly enjoy riding both my TDM and my S10. I couldn't care a flying f*ck what other peoples opinions are. They choose not to ride bikes like mine and I choose not to ride bikes like theirs.

I sometimes wonder if those naysayers are worried that they may have personally made a wrong choice of bike and criticise others as a way of self delusion and self support.

I agree that a bit of cross manufacturer banter can be humerous (S10 vs BMW)

But please let's all not get all anal about the opinion of others.

Big Dave got it, most don't.

I read these reviews and know they're going to be based upon someone else's "opinion", and we all know that "opinions" are like assholes, everyone has one and they all stink.

That said, I can only imagine that people who read reviews and get upset have self-doubt about their purchase and need someone...anyone, to help them feel good about what they've committed to.

Ever gone to someone's house and had them drag you out to the garage to show you their new bike (car, sled), only to be asked "What do you think?" I usually ask a few inquiring questions, but the most telling to me will be, "Is there anything you don't like about it?" The honest, pragmatic person will reply "Yeah, I don't like the piss poor minivan motor they put in this thing (my personal case with my '08 Wrangler), but it does so many other things very well(also my case). Nothing is perfect and I'd much rather have something that does a LOT very well than something that only does SOME things well.

I really "like" my ST, it does a LOT of what I want and need at a higher level than any bike I've had before. I have realistic expectations.

I too don't care, reviews are more entertainment, if I read a bike mag it is to pass time on the bog / in the bath.

I may look for some useful info, and one thing he missed was how small OEM luggage is, he mentioned Metal Mules and gave them a nod, which is great except most owners budgets will not stretch to them.

Other reviews from more experienced off-roaders have praised how well the ABS works on dirt and even mentioned the fact that the BMW would be useless without turning it off, OK serious off-roaders may prefer switchable ABS but the point is it works off-road.

I also tend to read more than one review of a bike I am interested in which shows up common agreement in some areas, and contradictions in others, I have seen reviews praising the off-road ability Vs GS, whilst others say the GS ios better, same goes for on tarmac, this failure to agree even telss me something and that is there can't be much in it!

Also in the UK off-roading is not a big thing, people who ride off-road tend to use off-road bikes and many of them do not ride on the road at all, we don't have many trails and tracks, adventure bikes are becoming more popular (Thanks Ewan) as a posing tool, and many are finding the comfort and practacality a good thing, but as a nation we are still focussed on race reps - and UK magazines employ guys who love race reps, often using ex-racers for reviews as well.

Until a few years ago I also believed any bike incapable of less than 150mph was useless, a tyre smaller than a 170 section indicated the bike was incapable of handling properly and if it weighed much more than 200kg it was no more than a huge chunk of scrap metal. This BS was forced fed to anyone reading bike magazines as I did as a younger man, firstly I had to have a GSXR-750, then it was a FZR1000R, then a Fireblade, then an R1, then a GSX-R1000, then an R1 again, then the Blade, then the R1, now it is the S1000RR - you get the picture.

Bike chassis and tyre technology started to rapidly exceed the talents of mere mortals in the 80's, I know I would go little or no faster on an S1000RR than I would on the first Fireblade from 20 years ago, especially on the road.

Things are changing in the UK, and the press are getting better at recognising bikes cannot be judged solely on lap times, power and speed.

Cool! ::008::

Same here Rasher, Got back from a big ride one day, realized that I was A bit sick of having to miss this road because Mr Ducati didn't like it because it was too rough, couldn't go there because Mr BMW didn't want to get his bike dusty, couldn't go here because there were too many police for Mr RRRR. Got a bit boring after a while.

Then I remembered the fact that I used to do lots of interesting stuff on my older bikes, back when they were more General purpose and decided to dip a toe in the ADV world. Had to push myself to get back on dirt roads etc for a while but once I had it has been a good thing.

Agree with what you say about reviews. If you read between the lines what you see if often the reviewers are really reviewing themselves.

I found the MCN review spot on. Couldn't have said it better. As for the Metal mules, perhaps someone needs to send him a set of Micatechs.
Really? Then you might as well find a way to disable the traction control because a bike with 'only 100hp' doesn't need it. Great reasoning....yep 'spot-on' with that I'd say. Also, I travel down a road paved with deep gravel on the way to work and have no fear of squeezing the front brake with reckless abandon..know why? Because the S10 just stops with no drama... This guy bags on a specific strength of this bike's ABS after half-heartedly playing with it maybe what...once? ...yep he's 'spot-on' with that assessment as well. Egad, if I felt the same way this guy did about the bike, I'd have it up for sale.

It seems the road that leads to the adventure bikes is a common one. I had similar experiences lead me down this path, except my friends were all named Mr Cruiser. None of them have followed me either, much to my dismay. Like I said in another topic, different strokes for different folks, I can hardly hold it against them.

:D :D It's the coffee's fault..I was up all night writing papers I'd procrastinated on. :-\ O:) The article starts out characterizing the bike pretty well. They were hitting some bullseyes, but for whatever reason their perspective became myopic and their reasoning was getting looney near the end. This 'departure from the pattern' seemed to correlate with where their knowledge and experence was lacking....off road. Still, with the wet tarmac in the background, the TCS comment left me dumbfounded.

Agree with the comments from big dave, Paul and others. I didn't buy my SuperT to make others happy or to gain their approval. I bought it for ME (and also my lovely bride)!!

I bought my Tenere so I could become a chick magnet, show off my skin tight leather pants, and impress the snot out of all the biker dudes.

I've decided to keep it anyway. R ::008:: ::022::
