That should be the headlight wire harness recall. I did that on my 2012 when I had a 2012! Should be done!

I just checked my VIN and no hard start recall there BUT there is one for the head light. I guess it's time to call the service center. That would probably explain why I've got one bulb out. :D

I checked my VIN and found there's a recall on my bike regarding the transmission!

"In affected motorcycles, the shift cam segment stopper on the transmission shift shaft was incorrectly manufactured with a sharp edge on the inside of its bend, rather than smooth radius. As a result, the stopper may crack at this sharp edge after continued operation due to fatigue caused by concentrated stress. In the worst case, the stopper may break, which could prevent the transmission from shifting properly which could result in a crash with injury or death."

Searching further on this, for bikes having DP05Y in their VIN# (are these the ES models?) only 19 units are affected, last three numbers 123 - 142, mine is 080, so I'm not sure why this recall is showing up for me?

I hadn't heard of that one! I checked my VIN and nothing shows.

On a side note, if and when the recall does show up, I vote that a new sticky thread is started with the recall details so it doesn't get mucked up with the rest of this thread which is full of conjecture and misc info.

Good point - we will do that.

Search is your friend to find the thread. It applied to very few bikes, many of which Yamaha and their dealers still had in their own possession.

Thanks for that site. It seems my headlight connector was already replaced through a recall and that I just need to replace a dead bulb. :p
Thanks for the link. I just found out my dealer didn't do the headlight harness recall on my 2013 replacement Tenere after hitting a deer with my 2012 in October 2014.

Thanks, yeah, I read that thread that's where I found the VIN range information. I still may check with my dealer just to be sure though.
What dealer are you using? Not too many good ones around here.

Well I have a choice of 2, there is Cal Coast in Ventura where I bought the bike and Santa Barbara Motorsports in Goleta close to my work.

I have had several of the hard start situations on my 2012 which took varying degrees of effort to get the bike going again. The second (and worst one), I had to have the shop remove the carbon build up on the valves to get it going again. RonH you may be at that point and the valves are sticking open.
I only had a few hard starts until I had the last one when the cam chain jumped timing. I too had the heavy carbon build that they found when searching (scope) for the hard start problem. They replaced most of the moving parts including the crankshaft. With 52,200 miles on the 2012 I traded it in on a 2015 ES. No regrets other than I recently have had a few attempted hard starts. Was thinking the cold weather was a consideration. Will be checking with the Dealership for the Recall to discuss the attempted hard starts.

I was able to create the hard start last weekend cause I wasn't going to go for a ride, just needed to check the battery.
35 degrees started the bike and only let it run for about a minute not enough to warm it up.
Shut it down, hit the starter and I could tell right away it wasn't going to start.
Hit WOT and it started right up.
I was experimenting based on what I've read.
Based on my non-scientific test the same thing plays out with my lawnmower, weed eater, and snowblower. Not letting them run after hitting them with a full choke tends to piss them off.
But we don't have any choke adjustments on the S10 so it would be interesting to see what Yamaha says.

I'm playing the hooey card on this mandatory recall for hardstarts. Was at my dealer, he looked it up, no recall. Remember what, Abraham Lincoln once said, "Don't believe everything you read on the internet". Really now, have you ever heard of state BMV's refusing to renew licenses unless a recall was done?

When I talked about pulling the number four fuse to shut off the fuel injector pump, he said the ECU shuts off the fuel injection in the start mode if it is WOT.

Um, there's a recall coming. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw the recall notice at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

Yeah, I bet Abraham Lincoln also had an iPhone :)

Joking apart, I wonder if the statement that "the ECU shuts off the fuel injection in the start mode if it is WOT" is correct. That would be interesting.
