For those running sans passenger seat with the luggage rack lowered, have you found an item of luggage that fits well into this space? For camping trips, I'd carry bulky stuff in this space and I certainly could strap a waterproof duffel there, but for hotel trips, I'm thinking that there might be a pelican case or a semi-rigid tail bag that would fit this space nicely.... something that would offer most of the functionality of a top box, but not be so rearward and tall. The dimensions are approximately 22"x9".

The Pelican 1510 roller case WILL fit nicely. I use one for 1 or 2 night motel trips. I use Rok straps.

+2 on the 1510. I was looking at the LOC version, but it won't fit in my Givi topbox on the FJR.

9"x22" are the exact measurements of one of Twisted Throttles new bags.

Jeff,

Could you snap a pic or 2? I am thinking this might be a good daily top box.

I have AltRider rack, and leave the seat on. I have an 80L horizontal open Sealline bag, It does not care if the saddle is under it.

My solution
A waterproof backpack bought at Costco on sale for $20. Cut the shoulder straps off and used some other straps to secure the backpack to the racks.

Works a treat!
The backpack has a roll top and a valcro strap together with cinch straps on the side.

Thanks for all the good suggestions.

Not sure I'm going to try it, but the Pelican Storm iM2300 is looking like a good compromise between fitting in the space, but not too heavy and tall. Grab rails, of course, have to go, but I assume I can get some spacers to keep the attachment points for the factory hard bags in the right spot.

I installed the Schad Top case, cheap answer to my need for storage and a place to lock up my helmet at work.
It ran me about 140.00 shipped.
It comes with an attach plate, and installed in a few minutes on the stock luggage rack.
