Im getting a bit of lower back ache after about 30 mins of riding.
I find that if i slide a bit further back on the seat from my natural riding position it helps.
Its as though my lower back is getting compressed.
I will play around with tilting the handlebars forward or back etc but wondered if anyone has any better ideas?
Perhaps an airhawk or are they just for numb bum which i dont get.
Tried seat in both height positions with no difference.

Do you have stock handlebars? I've heard the more intense sweep angle causes the shoulder blades to come together and arms to sit further back. That might be forcing more weight down to your lower back, versus having your arms more forward?

This may be way off, but I see more back pain due to weak core than anything else (I teach exercise).
Are you in good shape? Do you ever do any exercises strickly for the core?
If not, you probably should.

::026:: What he said.
As someone that lives with constant back pain to a point where I don't notice it (crushed 3 vertebrae 27years ago deadlifting) and having recently had complete hip replacement in both legs (again, weights) it is very important to maintain physical health, especially riding a motorcycle or you will feel more fatigued and just not enjoy riding. I do find myself re-adjusting my posture on long rides as I tend to slouch, so, do core exercises, wear some kind of waist support, no not a corset , unless you really want to ::025::

Hey I resemble that remark about weak core. As someone said on the forum, if we were meant to bend over, God would have put cake on the floor! ::025:: I see more lower back ache when I start riding in the spring (longer, and longer distances) and less as the riding season goes on. I also have two torn disc's in my back, but that's another story. You are very correct in your description of the weak core condition.

Seems like plenty of us on here are old crocks with damaged backs..I've suffered with advanced Spinal Stenosis since 2004/5 and sometimes the pains hurt like hell, but I know plenty other folks a lot worse off

AKC maybe you should consider some risers which may help :)

::026:: for risers, I fitted a set of 30mm risers on mine and it sorted out most of my ergo' issues.

+1 on core strength. Almost all motion eminates from your core. Strengthening those muscles solves a multitude of maladies a lot of us suffer from. It takes a little work, but well worth it.

WHAT WORKED FOR MY BACK ISSUES

I have a few spine issues (neck mid back lower back)
See a Doctor. Get X-ray and MRI.
Do your Physical Therapy and if it fails try yearly injections.

On the Bike
1. Set the shocks, springs, tire pressure to a lower than max level
2. Try bar risers to straighten the posture
3. Take a break every 150 miles

Take your time and stretch before after and during rides

Best of Health

Just another suggestion. There are yoga routines specifically for back issues.
BTW, no spring chicken here at 59 y.o.--- 30 yrs of Martial arts has taken its toll on my joints.
Starting up yoga a couple of yrs ago has really helped me.
I have some suggestions of DVDs you can do at home e if interested.

Hydration is the number one reason for lower back pain, core is second. Most people are horribly dehydrated in the US

Try a motocross kidneybelt. I was having back fatigue (not pain though) and it's a non-issue with a kidney belt and I can go all day. Although I've been wearing one for a while (before the Super Tenere) so likely not bike related for me.
