So the seller of the 2014 just texted and has decided not to sell the bike. Guess I'm going with the 2012 or will look around a bit more. Or maybe I should take it as a sign, lol.

Be patient Padawan. A good bike, to you will come. Don't settle; learned my lesson that years ago.

the raven black are the best teneres known for being sneeky fast.... well, I just like the color, with the red cheek decals always reminds me of a black bird.... at 13000 miles that bike is probably still in the break in period .

I wasn't aware of handlebar changes on the 2014+? I did notice an actual riser vs the one piece triple tree built in riser on the Gen 1 bikes. Are the handlebars different? I have compared and like others, noticed the Yamaha handlebars do have more of a sweep look rather than a motoX or even like the BMW GS Adventure. But....I like that sweep, especially coming from a cruiser bike.
Yes, they are different, but I haven't compared them enough to make an expert comment. I know they are set back about 10MM closer to the rider on the 14. I've read where it is a stronger bar than on the early models.

Don't get in a rush over getting a bike. I There will be new deals that come out from time to time. Be patient and vigilant.

Ok so here is where I'm at:

2012 Gen1 $8k - 13k miles, add ons: Touratech Zega Panniers, Seat Concepts seat, Madstad Bracket, Aftermarket windshield, Side wind deflectors, heated grips have been added, skid plate on.

2014 Gen2 $8k - 6500 miles, add ons: OEM yamaha luggage panniers - the rest is bone stock

So my thinking is this, the 2012 has items on it I will need on the 2014. Items include Seat Concepts, Madstad Bracket, Aftermarket windshield, Side wind deflectors. These total = $580. But...the 2012 has the Touratech pannier setup, which alone is around $1400, and I do like them. Also, regardless of which bike I get, I will be adding AltRider crash bar, Rox risers, and AltRider rear rack plate. This items will cost = $760.

My huge hang up is cruise control. I REALLY like it on my Harley. I know I will use it. I've investigated the Kaoko throttle lock, and if I go with the 2012 I will use this, but it's not the same I'm afraid. So it looks as if $580-$600 is what is holding me back from buying the 2014. Plus the $760 I will be spending in addition.

What would you do? Is cruise and a Gen2 worth $580?

That's how I've broken it down. Opinions respected. Thanks!
Mine is a 13 and no issues but I would definitely be willing to pay the extra $580 for gen 2 !!!

Now down to 2 possibilities:

2013 - asking price $9k; needs a skid plate, diff windshield
2014 - asking price $10,500; needs tires, Rox risers, and seat

The 14 obviously is a Gen 2 with cruise. This is a second bike for me, so I originally had a budget of $8k. I'm slowly approaching beyond that, in hopes that I will not make a mistake and buy the "wrong" bike. Also I feel the resell on the 14 would be higher. It's a $1500 difference now, yet could yield a better return down the road. These are asking prices only.

I appreciate all the responses and all the feedback so far. I like to just think out loud, and putting it on paper or putting it here allows me to do just that.

The 2013 is a little higher from the going price than the Gen2 seems to be IF they are in similar condition with the same number of miles.
If accessories get factored into the price of a used bike, they usually are at 1/3-1/2 of new. Plus, everybody has different ideas of what is desirable, so dealers want them off when taking in a trade, because they want the bike as close to stock as possible.

There is a 2014 on AdvRider in SC for $9k with every farkle imaginable including Jesse Luggage. It's a steal at his asking price. I've owned both a Gen 1 and Gen 2 and personally it's worth the extra money to upgrade to the newer model. Lots of refinements in the Gen 2 and believe me you want the electric cruise control if you ride any distance at all. It's Amazimg.

I agree. That looks like a good deal and isn't terribly far from from the OP. I just bought an identical bike with less miles (2200), but far less farkles and no warranty for just a bit less than that. If you could do that with your budget, it could be worthwhile. On the other hand if you're not in a hurry, I'm guessing that you will see more deals of that nature come up over the next few months. Bikes are not moving very well unless they are aggressively priced.

I can do $9k. I messaged the seller. Bike does have 27k miles, yet does retain YES warranty valid til 2020....that's crazy and certainly gives piece of mind.

27K miles is nothing for this bike. As long as the regular maintenance has been done. I would question about the valve check, which is a 26K item. Most of the S10's will still be within tolerances, but some like mine, two of the exhaust valves were just a little out.

I have 44K on my '13, and I think it runs just as well as new. About the only thing with mine, if I cruise 80+, it likes to drink a little oil. Below that, none at all.

Mark, thanks for the reply.

Curious to anyone who can clarify. I've only ridden the 2012 Gen 1, which is what attracted me to the Super Tenere...never ridden a Gen 2. Are the physical attributes of the bike the same? I've heard the handlebars are slightly different? True? I'm only asking for the clarification as I might end up driving a few hours to buy this 2014 and want to know beforehand as this could be a potential buy "sight unseen" per say. There are no 2014+ bikes for me to just go hop on and take long test ride.

Thanks again for ALL the great feedback. I promise once I get a bike it'll just be ride pics from here on out ;)

If you were limited to just 1 word to describe the difference between gen 1 & Gen 2, Id suspect the word "Refinement", with a capital R might be appropriate.

And it's something you can feel immediately.

You can add some of those refinements retroactively to a Gen 1. (example: clutch basket)
But some you can't very easily. (Pistons\rings and awesome cruise control)

Snake caught the difference well, with the Refinement word. If you liked the Gen1, you'll really like the Gen2.

Had to put purchase on hold while I traveled to Utah on the Harley for annual bike trip. The whole time I kept thinking of all the dirt roads I want to take the S10 on. I'm not your typical "cruiser bike guy" or "Harley guy"...meaning I ride mine, and at times it goes places other Harley owners would cringe at, lol. So the S10 will prove way better on forest service roads then a StreetGlide.

Ready to purchase and I've decided on a 2014+. PLEASE post any links if you know of any good deals while I'm scouring CL and cycle trader.

Thanks so much for all the replies and advice here!

I looked for 6 or 8 months, the "deals'' fell through, I ended up buying a brand new 2016 es for $11700.00. Now I have broken it properly and should never have major problems. My thinking was after losing out on the deals with farkels the PO may have wrecked the bike already with improper break-in, oil, final drive maintenance, torque specs, spoke maintenance, etc. Am I spending money on it yes, but my risers are torqued, the brake and clutch line extensions are perfect and secure. Just my thinking, but at my age this is probably the final bike purchase of this type and I want it mint and I effin deserve it. Just my 2 cents. Sorry to ramble. Scott
