"Lash"

My only complaint about my 2012 Super T is what I call a "lash" when cruising through small Midwest (US) towns at speeds between 20 and 35 mph. If the bike were chain drive, the clunking/stuttering would be from being in too high of a gear and/or a too loose chain. With my Big T, I reduce to 5th, then 4th gear, and have switch to S mode to smooth out things. I suppose I could also engage the back brake, but that shouldn't be necessary. This issue never existed with the 5 Beemers I've owned over past years.
Has anyone else had this problem? Or, is this even a problem? I'd appreciate comments. Thanks in advance.

I think it is a symptom of shaft drives. I’ve only had one other bike with shaft drive kwac 1000st which was the same. I found that this lash becomes more of a problem when riding off road

Could be, MattR. I might have to live with it. I'm guessing that it might be an unavoidable result of a big twin with cross-plane (plain?) timing.
Thanks.

. . . . I reduce to 5th, then 4th gear, and have switch to S mode to smooth out things. . . . .
Try the opposite. Go up one gear and/or switch to "T". I never leave "S", but if I'm just chugging along in town behind traffic, going up one gear smooths the throttle.

Thats interesting. Thanks. But, actually, the throttle...the engine...is okay...runs smoothly in the low speed chugging in traffic. But the drive shaft is lashing. Going up to 6th makes it worse. Spinning it up in 4th S or T eliminates the problem, but I'd rather chug at low revs in town....as I did with my boxer Beemers.
I can live with this, but wondered if anyone else had same experiences.
Thanks.

Well, I'll have to pay closer attention now. I thought it was throttle sensitivity, maybe it's driveline. I always have my music on, so I don't hear anything.

Chains are way 'lashier'. I was initially going to say gear selection but being a 2012 you may have something playing up. How many miles on the bike?

Same experience as yours with my 2012 T, Axel. The immediate approach to my home includes a half-mile stretch of a slightly downhill street I take in 3rd gear at about 20 mph/2000 rpm,
and the backlash in the shaft drive is clearly audible in that configuration. Bike approaching 70 k miles and it never evolved into anything more alarming than that, so I'm not worried.
My 40 Y old, 200 K miles shaft drive Guzzi twin never did that, though. Progress is fine, but not always ALL it's cracked up to be...

I too have a Gen1 bike, which I’ve had for 7 years and around 42k miles. It’s the only shaft drive bike I’ve ever owned. I can’t say I’ve experienced anything like you’re describing, nothing noisy or odd at all in the driveline. Sure the bike doesn’t like too high a gear at low speed, but I’ve found that true of all twins that I’ve owned. Fours are a bit more forgiving in that situation.

I really don't know what gear I'm in around town. I just go by feel. If I'm in too high of a gear, she tends to vibrate a tad, and I down shift.

This has virtually everything to do with being in 5th or 6th gear and doing 20 Mph............... You have no issue.... The bike has no issue...... Try using 2nd gear doing 20Mph..... If you have this noise or any type of chatter using the correct gear "you then might" have an issue...... What you are hearing is 1-2-3 doing there job for a normal smooth job...........

These engines dont like to be bogged down or putt-putt-putt around town......... These valve will cake up if that is someones style of riding....

Down shift, get the RPM's pumped up and get those revs, revving....... It revs to 8K with a rev limiter..... it's good to see 6-7-8K EVERY RIDE ! ! ! ! ! ! (for the motor health)

Good luck !

My 2012 did the same thing yours is doing. What mine did though at any time i tried to hold a steady speed with a light throttle it stumbled so bad it shook the drive line. Speed didnt matter and gear didnt matter. The lower the gear the worse it was. Again only at very light throttle. Light throttle at 55 you could still feel mine doing that. I got a new DR 650 that did the same thing. It was easy to fix though it has a carb. On the super T i opened both bleed screws 1 3/4 turns and this helped a lot. Most on the forum just go 3/4 turns out though. Then i got a booster plug that fools the ecu on air temperature. It pulls smooth and will easily pull me through parking lots or through down town at any speed. I have been running this set up for years and it will pull 20 mph in 4th easy. Of course it has been said a ecu flash will fix that too. Just my experiance. More info to think about. It did help mine tremendously.

To me, lash is the free play that is taken up by the drive as throttle is added from tick over. The more free play the drive has the more lash there will be.

Yep....

#2 keep tight tension on #3... The #3 male, can rock in a female pocket on #4... This is the "lash" sound and feel.... The spring is there to allow the "allowance" for #3 & #4 to give the rider a smooth drive and ride..... I hear it the most while im off road. If Im on the gas and in any type of off-road where the rear wheel is chattering over bumps or im accelerating over braking bumps, Etc. it chatters crazy....... This #3 & #4 will chatter like a mad man..... It's just loading and unloading....
Another time I hear it is if you're off-road again and I maybe standing and going around corners aggressively or even aggressive in the forest. When I might be hard on the throttle and also have my foot on the rear brake. I might hit the rear brake into ABS, to help pitch the attitude of the bike and then hard on the throttle... Some times the rear wheel (spinning) might be in a state of "off - on - off - on", during this situation this #3 & #4 are chattering away and causing all types of racket.....
I make note of it because I can hear it............... But it's no big deal... it's working properly........................ (this is always with TC turned OFF)

Probably still quieter than the chain slap on my Orange bike (which scared the shit out of me the one time I rode without ear plugs).
