Good catch. Sorry, long night with a toddler... Probably shouldn't have been talking to anyone this morning, much less reading and typing.

But, pricewise, the dealer has a price that they'll take. No one is beating them up and taking it for less than they want to sell at. The goal is always to find that true price - why pay more than they are willing to take? The idea of "it's best for the industry...," "it's best for the resale value...," or similar arguments only hold up if everyone is willing to forgo what's in their immediate best interest for an abstract, long term, benefit that may never be realized.

Personally, the part that drives me nuts is that me and the dealer both know what we're going to end up at and whether we'll make a deal or not... but, you have to play the game and everyone's time is wasted. I've been trying to find some enjoyment in it lately, but it still feels silly.

Oh, and honestly, this time of year cash flow can be more important than markup. It makes sense to always try to get the best deal, and let the seller decide what they need to get out of something.
^^This^^

If the dealer is willing to take a 'loser' deal to move a unit, then so-be-it. It happens sometimes - and it's their prerogative whether to take the offer or not. There's no harm in testing the low-side of what a dealer will take.

The search for bottom dollar is a worthy pursuit. I get it. So don't misunderstand me when I say as I have gotten older, it just means less to me.
Or put another way, what I want has changed from "getting the cheapest price possible" to "buying exactly what I want" and with the least amount of grief.

Purchasing goods and services are so much more enjoyable for me now. Riding this bike for the last few years has brought me so much sheer enjoyment, it just dwarfs any concern I might have had over bottom dollar.

The Tenere in question is gonna take it's next owner just about anywhere they dare to dream to ride. And I suggest it will deliver the same experience as a brand new msrp one would. So it's an economic sweet deal at $8-9-10-11K....

I just picked up a '13, new. I'm 5'9" and have 30" inseam - I can't flat foot it. It was actually one of my big hesitations. It's a heavy bike to hold up on tippy toes.
I'm 5'7", 30" inseam. One foot down works well for me.

creggur, this is what I am thinking may be my best strategy. This is a high-class BMW / Triumph / Moto Guzzi dealer that probably got the S10 as a trade-in when someone wanted a GS. I imagine they probably just want to get the S10 off the floor to make room for more of their high-dollar bikes. I'm hoping they may take a low offer to move the bike and get a little cash in this dull time of year.

So KBB has my '07 FZ6 listed as $2,600 trade in value. Ultimately my plan is to get a deal on the S10 of $6000 out the door. So whether they want to only come down to $8,600 on the S10 and give me $2,600 on my FZ6, or accept my $8,000 initial offer and only give me $2,000 for my FZ6 I don't care. The means to get to the final price is largely for them to decide, I just want that $6,000 price. They could put a $5,000 price tag on my FZ6 if they took the trade and probably sell it in a heartbeat.

I agree with snakebitten, I hate wasting my time and trying to "play the game." I'm ready to buy the bike and the dealer is 1.5 hours from me. If I'm riding my FZ6 that far to go look at the bike, I sure as hell better be riding the S10 back home that evening.

Another note: If I can't get them to budge much on the price, has anyone ever had a dealer throw in other goodies instead? What if I ask them for a new battery, a couple cans of chain lube, a new helmet off the shelf, a pair of boots, or other accessories? I know some of those things aren't worth as much as a price drop, but I bet the dealer would be more inclined to give you a new battery and some gear instead of coming down $500.

What do you guys think?

By the way, thank you all SO much for the help and advice so far. Some other forums refuse to help when I post questions, you guys totally rock and are really making my decision easier ;D ::015::

I think you should skip the chain lube on this shaft-drive bike. ;)

Personally I would go for something that only costs them labor, like a free service next time the valve clearance needs checking.

Hahaha brain fart! :D

Should I trust a non-Yamaha dealer to do something like that?

Oops, I forgot that it was a BMW dealer. BMW does have some good riding gear, maybe they can cut you a deal. But I personally would first go for a price cut on the bike.

I would go for the price cut first too. But considering most gear is marked up at least double in the first place, they're probably willing to throw something in if they won't budge much on the price.

First off, $8995 would be a great price for a S10 without any farkles. This bike already has hard luggage, crash bars, LED lights, TBR exhaust, etc, close to $2,000 in extras, so it is an even better deal. If you paid their asking price, you would be getting a very good deal. You should go ahead and start talking to them and maybe getting an even better deal, but you won't know until you start talking to the dealer. The longer you procrastinate, the better the chance that someone else will take this incredible deal.

I agree it is currently a very good price for what it is. I won't be upset if I can't get them to budge on the price, but I was just saying it can't hurt to try bartering ;)

And to be honest, I really haven't been procrastinating. I've only been seriously considering this bike since Friday, I couldn't make it to the dealer on Saturday (since they close at 3pm!) and they're closed Sunday and Monday. They open at 9am tomorrow and I plan to call and ask about my trade-in before I waste a trip.

Fmscott2,
No worries. We aren't busting your chops. :)

You just haven't been in TenereWorld day-in and day-out for years. So you had no idea that your original question came dangerously close to a "duh?" for some of us. Lol

I think I've only seen one deal on here that was better. (my opinion, of course) That bike was very low mileage, heavily farkled, and even had $3,000 worth of suspension upgrades.

Nobody actually asked if it was a good deal.

This is a crazy deal. I look at that price and compare it to what else you could buy with that money, and then compare it back to the Tenere.. WOW.

I have a 2008 fz6 that I've been trying to sell for $3500 with only 1 inquiry. If the dealer gave you $2600 for it, I'd be surprised.

$9k for the bike you describe seems like a reasonable price to me.

I do not believe the previous owner was a member here. If he\she was, they never posted any pics.
Yea, now that I see the bike, they are trying to hose you. What a ragged out XT. :)

Not bad. Offer them $8K and make sure they have the stock muffler for when the TB falls apart. ;)

I thought it was the carbon TB exhaust that fell apart? This one appears to be stainless.

Well I still haven't pulled the trigger on the bike. The dealer lowered the price to $8799 (not OTD though :(). However I was thinking about my test ride on it.

I only got to ride around a deserted mall parking lot and got into third gear once, but there seemed to be a particular RPM range where the bike seemed to pick-up in vibration. It wasn't a high RPM, a little after the bike got going. Coming off of my inline-four FZ6, it seemed very harsh. But I've never ridden any other bike before, so I don't know if this vibration is normal for a parallel twin.

Can anyone comment on whether this vibration I was feeling is normal? Remember, the bike has 25k miles.
