But, pricewise, the dealer has a price that they'll take. No one is beating them up and taking it for less than they want to sell at. The goal is always to find that true price - why pay more than they are willing to take? The idea of "it's best for the industry...," "it's best for the resale value...," or similar arguments only hold up if everyone is willing to forgo what's in their immediate best interest for an abstract, long term, benefit that may never be realized.
Personally, the part that drives me nuts is that me and the dealer both know what we're going to end up at and whether we'll make a deal or not... but, you have to play the game and everyone's time is wasted. I've been trying to find some enjoyment in it lately, but it still feels silly.
Oh, and honestly, this time of year cash flow can be more important than markup. It makes sense to always try to get the best deal, and let the seller decide what they need to get out of something.
If the dealer is willing to take a 'loser' deal to move a unit, then so-be-it. It happens sometimes - and it's their prerogative whether to take the offer or not. There's no harm in testing the low-side of what a dealer will take.
