What is happening.....
I just got my bike insurance bill for the next year - The rates for my 2012 S-10 have been raised by exactly $250 for the next year.
I wont mention any names - but they are represented by some white coat wearing lady on TV commercials, on every channel 24/7.
I have no insurance claims or traffic tickets for the last 5 years or longer..... My theory is that all you off road riders are crashing your bikes and sending in insurance claims, making these bikes have a bad rep in the insurance biz...
OK, perhaps I'm wrong on that, but I could use some help on finding a less costly motorcycle insurance company to use.
My 2nd bike - a 1979 Honda CBX was not raised and it is still the same @ $110/yr.
I live in Arizona. I have till the end of May to find something better.

What the bike is has probably finally filtered down the data stream after a good solid year. A very heavy dirt bike, or a rather chunky sport bike. You're probably correct; claims.
$261 for six months here. State Farm.

Sounds to me like a case of excessive advertising.

I have found out that with vehicle insurance the only way to keep getting the best rates is to keep switching. These companies seem to keep sucking their current customers dry to offer great rates to those comparison shopping.

In fact, doesn't that lady in the coat do the comparison for you? Maybe she can use that fancy gun to get you less coverage than you NEED, but for a price you can "afford"...

Time to shop around.

I was also with Progressive and they increased rates after 9 years. Switched to Allstate, bundling the house, truck, car, and bikes.

I just renewed with Progressive, and my rate dropped. $373 for the full year, including an additional $10k of accessory coverage.

$415 for a year with 1K deductible with Nationwide here. I

I'd couldn't believe when I went to insure this bike with progressive who I'd had my previous two BMW's with. Each were about $290/yr. Both '09 1200's. One an RT, and the other a GS. So the big dirt bike theory is shot. Progressive wanted around 800 for a year on the Tenere.

I think the problem here is the insurance co's see a 1200cc Yamaha street bike. In other words a 1200cc sport bike. The insurance company's have no idea what this bike is or the demographic that rides it.

up here it all depends on coverage.
Alberta has a open market system, which is ok.
basic insurance (one way), fire, theft and vandalism $375/yr
If I wanted to add collision to that it would basically double.
my other bikes carry basic insurance only, bill for all three is about $600/yr

Yeah, they are totally wrong with the way they rate this bike. It will get beat by 750 rice rockets all day... But someone must be paying it because they are charging it.

I paid 750ish for first year for my s-10 through white coat lady too. I had all my other bikes/ house/ boat/ jeep through foremost/aka farmers insurance they wanted 865 a year.
next year when its due again if its more that 750 ima drop and search else where.
I too do not have any wrecks or speeding tickets . but have only had mc license for 3 years and am 27 =/
they only wanted 275 a year for full coverage on a ktm 990 :/ it was that or s-10 no regrets besides insurance on the s-10 lol

Green Lizard user here... Full coverage, super high limits/coverage and I pay $398 a year... I dropped my old insurance company last year after I called to add the S10 and they wanted $1800+ a year!!!!
LOL I think not, I was with the old company for 25 + years. No accidents, no claims, no tickets...WTF $1800 a year!!! Happy with the lizard so far, I have heard of some insurance company's listing/classifying the Super Tenere as a sport bike? Maybe check that they didn't re classify it as a sport bike...

Best of luck to you..

Did you really just blame the riders that ride on dirt for your increase?

That is so funny. Yea dude, every time I rip down a dirt road they punish you. :)

I have seen a finite amount of reported Super Tenere wrecks that resulted in insurance claims. I might be wrong, but I think they are 100% you "street riders" lol

All kidding aside, I doubt it is the Tenere history that is affecting your rates.

By the way, for this dirty ole dirtbag dirt rider:

12 months. Comprehensive. $1000 deductible. S10, KTM SM950, VTR 1000, KLR $909.00
Crazy chick with white lab coat.

Doglegg, I live in Mesa, Az and my rates went up 50 percent with no claims. I called Progressive and was told it was due to a large number of claims made in our "area", which I interpreted to mean Arizona. I can't tell you how many fatal and near fatal motorcycle crash scenes I have been on this year, but it's been a lot. Combination of old person meets biker. Bikers are really getting pounded in our state. Most have no clue how to ride which is why they got clobbered in the first place, but insurance companies are businesses and they need to make money. My contract ends this month and I am definitely looking around for a better deal.

I went from progressive to geico and cut my premium in half. Turns out I was not really with Progressive, but with Drive Insurance which is related to Progressive, but sold through agents. Progressive Direct was cheaper, but not as low as Geico, so I dumbed Progressive.

I guess I am a lucky guy, the insurance for my S-10 is 147.00 per year full coverage and there is nothing special about me. I have only been riding 5 years on a full time basis.
