My thoughts as a current yam pannier owner and ex Jesse pannier owner is
fit a decent locking latching system
Don't tie the locks to ignition key
Offer different size options ala zega pro
Try to get as close in as possible ala Jesse, yam oem
On a std s10 that could mean custom shape lhs but "normal"
Shape rhs.
Don't make them like hb xplorers !
Make frames from stainless steel or alloy ( my old Jesse mounts rusted when the powder coat
Chipped
Makes sure keys and locks are gloved hand friendly
Looks may be important for wider sales intodays trendy adv rider market

1. I've got the stock panniers because I hate those huge metal racks left on the bike when the bags are gone that most aftermarket systems use. Compared to the BMW, the Yamaha still has a lot of metal hanging out there but at least its not the big metal tubes. Very unattractive to me.

2. Has to be toploading. Side loading is very annoying.

3. Waterproof

4. < $800/pair. I understand Jesse's are great bags. But holy crap - thats just too much money for luggage.

Something about all that extra cage, without the panniers, has grown on me.
It might be because it was such an amazing day, and the fact that Terlingua is truly a magical place at night, but my favorite picture of my desert beast is:

They must be ready to test in summer.... ::014::
Oh boy.... What to do, What to do ::010::

I'm in the need for some panier. Like right now...
And I fell in love with the Zega Pro from Touratech. Really dig the double inged/latch system.

Could you post a pic of what your creation might look like please... ::008::
thanks for your involvement in creating great pieces that LOOK good too ::008::

+1. Makes the bike look tougher, gives good crash protection and provides great tie-down points.

Yea. That's what I mean.

This bike has changed a lot of my preferences.
I like BIG now. I like steal. I like knobbys on tarmac. I like TC and ABS. I like sittin up straight.

I think it's like getting over your Mustang 5.0 days and getting addicted to a Big mean Raptor.

I would make them just like Happy Trail panniers - http://happy-trail.com - so I just buy them from them. :) The things I dig about the HT panniers...

* Top-loading
* Waterproof
* Lockable
* Sturdy
* Easy to Install
* Multi-point Mounting System
* Excellent Customer Service

I'm glad you can't destroy it, keep trying :D

No panniers yet :'( they buy a new machine to do it but is not ready yet. They hope at the end of august. Me too because I want to do a trip in the Alps and I need it... :mad:

I'm the opposite. I like the side after experiencing it. The opening is bigger so I can fit bigger stuff.

Come again? You have 2 side cases of the same dimensions. Put a door on the side of one and a lid on top of the other. How, pray tell, do you 'fit bigger stuff' in one or the other? ::)

I guess I meant I can fit bigger stuff with easier access. I'm not really sure what I meant. Must have been sniffing too much exhaust again. LOL

I will say this: the "access" to my stuff on the side load is much better in my opinion. I recently went for a trip with a guy that had stock top-loaders and I had my Pelican side-loaders.

When I needed something out of my pannier, I just flipped the 2 latches and had full access to everything. He would often be digging through all of his crap to get to anything that was on the bottom.

To each their own. I am 100% satisfied with what I have. Lots of top loaders are 100% satisfied with what they have.
