Thanks

What do you need to consider?

Hmmmm, let's see;

Gas, yea, that's important!! You're gonna need that every 200 miles or so.

Tires, another important item to consider. Mileage varies here but you're good for at least 5,000 miles on the Tourance EXP.

Ooh, farkles! Yea, those are paramount!!!!! See link below -

http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=2509.msg42458#msg42458

What else???

Nope, that about covers it!!

Oh, blue!! Get the blue!!!! They're faster. ::024:: ::024:: ::024::

Joe, welcome, but your question seems a little open-ended. Are you interesting in information to help you decided if the S10 is the right bike? General things to watch for when buying a new motorcycle? Discussion on how to reduce costs and get he best deal? Specific things about the S10 to watch out for? Advice on accessories?

Anything mechanical I need to know about? How is the reliability? I haven't found anything bad through my searches, but I hope I am not missing something. I have found a black for $12,950 and a blue for $14,000. I am thinking black as blue isnt worth $1000 to me. Black will be plenty fast compared to the blue...I just know it! I know farkles are important, and I need to buy them.

Tires and gas are good.

Thanks
Joe

Check your spokes.

Put petrol in it.

Change tires occasionally.

Give it 4000 Km before you make a final decision on any vibes.

But most of the problems with the S10 comes from choosing how many farkles to buy with the money you saved.

Cheers

Things i have learned since i got mine:

Reliabilty is Top notch.

There is a factory recall on a fuel pump O-ring that may have installed incorrectly on some models. Check to see that your model has been inspected and repaired. If you are buying from a reputable deal;ler they likely have already done this.

There have been some instances reported of "Hard Starting" which has symptoms of being flooded. There is a useful thread here http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=2149.msg50050;topicseen#new to read up about it. Thankfully my Tenere Has been free of any of these minor issues and has been a complete joy to ride.

You coming from a Duc MS1200, I would be interested to hear your impressions between the 2 Bikes after you get the S10.

Good Luck! Enjoy the new S10 ::022::

I owned a 2005 Multistrada S. It gave me an appreciation for long travel suspension. The S10 is quite a bit heavier than your Multi but once you're moving, handles like a much lighter bike. The riding position is more relaxed than the Multi. Reliability should be better too.

As has been said above this is an open question. There have been very few people dissapointed in this bike and the ones that are are usually supremo (or so they say !) motocross riders. On top of that, reliability is top notch. I have still yet to hear of one breaking down where the rider could not get it home and they have been around for 18 months now.

My advice, if you do decide to buy it - and I do recommend that, (but not for motocross - it's an adventure bike,) is not to buy the yamaha bash plate, large screen or panniers.
The Yamaha bash plate is only a stone guard and if hit by a rock will hole the sump. The large screen isn't its the same size but a bit wider at the top and the panniers are too plastic. They can easily snap off during a fall and the locking mechanism needs a lot of TLC, i.e. oil and locktite and still only has a plastic catch what can easily be broken into. There are now plenty of aftermaket alternatives to these and a search here or on ADV will show them.

Good luck

I sold my Multi 1200 after getting the S10. The S10 is little heavier, and rake is relaxed compared to the Multi, lean in is slightly slower, but it holds the line through corners really well. It will go a lot farther on a tank of gas. Bottom line for me, very easy to work on, easy access to battery and electrics/fuses. Gas tank tilts back for easy access to airbox and anything else under there.

You can toss the chain oil.

Hey Joe, ::004::

I assume you’ve taken, if not take a test ride... addictive.

Read the forums, here and on advrider. Also consider that often folks who aren’t having issues are out riding/racking up miles and not racking up the forum entries. On the forums, check out so many of the pole questions and especially ride reports to get a sense of how many people are racking up the miles and are very satisfied.

As I’m sure you’ve done, consider/compare the features/function-technology = ABS, TC, UBS... and so for the $; a great value! ::022::

As for the saving $1000 - it sounds like the black one is prolly in your future. I'm blue but wouldn't hold that against you one bit. ::008::

And so if all the goodness you’ve been hearing about isn’t enuf, Also think about the YES(Yama Extended Service) program - for a few hunna dollars you can get years of extra ‘comfort’.

The S10 is a deep well of ride-ability, road-ability, serviceability – look to rack up the miles and adventures.

All the best.

dean ::001::
Blue - August 2011 -8000 miles and counting. Super satisfied!

You really shouldn't make these unproven statements about the OEM accessories. Like all these things it is a matter of personal choice, finances, and how you are actually going to use the bike that determines whether something is any good. Do you have any proof that the bash plate will hole the sump if hit by a rock or is this just conjecture based on other peoples opinions on the forum? Also, if you're never (or very rarely) going to take the bike off road then this isn't an issue. Do you have any proof that the boxes easily snap off during a fall? (I have seen direct evidence that they don't) and I don't have any problems at all with the locking mechanism on mine. In my opinion the OEM boxes look the best so if aesthetics is high on your wishlist then they fit the bill perfectly. The screen, I can't really comment on but then I'm quite happy with the standard screen so won't be changing it. I'm 6'-0" and find the standard screen very effective. If you're going to give your opinion of something try to just do that rather than tell people not to buy stuff just because you personally wouldn't buy it. ::) :-X :-\ ;)

Welcome to the forum Joe! If you haven't test rode one, I would suggest you do, although many here bought theirs during the PDP and placed their order before actually seeing one in person. No regrets in my case!

As for the color, they are both good. If you add your location to your profile, perhaps someone here can help you locate other pricing options if you do prefer the blue.

Good luck!

My advice is to go on a few hundred mile road trip, because once you get on ,your not going to want to get off. Take some time and adjust the suspension to your liking it makes a big difference in handling. Oh and Black really is the faster color, those with blue bikes are in denial. ::001::

Welcome on, Joe. Better getter done. It is highly improbable and totally lacking in credibility to suggest that you might be disappointed. Where are you ???? We always send a welcoming of 12 bikes to greet all ... OK, kidding. Let us know when the deed is done. Again, ::004:: . R ::022::

Joe, if you haven't made the decision about whether this is the right bike for you, I'd get a copy of the latest MCN which has a comprehensive GS vs. S10 test and also read this Motorcycle USA test:

http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/12/11079/Motorcycle-Article/2011-Adventure-Touring-Shootout.aspx

I'd also read the following advrider threads:

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=545850
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=742407
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=585995

This is a site for S10 owners, so as you'd expect, it will tend to be overwhelming positive. I'm also positive about the bike, but it is certainly not without fault and you'll get a little more balanced view with these other sites and articles.

I think the biggest thing you want to think about in a transition from your current bike to the S10 is the increase in the physical size of the bike (the S10 is much larger/taller) and the weight (the S10 weighs 90-lbs more). Some folks will be fine with these sort of change, but others will find the larger bike unwieldy.

Accessories are such an individual decision, I hate to make a blanket recommendation for anything. My suggestion would be to buy the bare bike with nothing on it, and then let accessory decisions come to you over time when you've had a chance to see what you think you need and a chance to see all the opinions. (If the dealer is willing to give you break on accessories purchased with the bike, I'd negotiate a percentage off the price for any purchased within the next six months or so - they should be willing to do this.)

Good luck and hope to see you around.

- Mark

Depending on where you live, you can get one from D & H cycles in Alabama for $11,999 if they have any available since many were on the PDP program. Farkles come next. Great bike. Pretty tall though. Reliability should be good since it is a Yamaha but extending warranty available too.

"You really shouldn't" launch into a diatribe based upon an assumption about how somebody got their information. The stone guard warning was free advice, based upon recorded incidents of the OEM skid plate putting a hole in the sump because of a poorly thought out mounting system. Even if you don't plan to ride off road very much, why by the OEM plate when there are much more worthy options in the same price range? Asking for a link with the info might be a better plan than showing how surly you can be.

As of last Friday D&H Cycle in Cullman had a black and a blue S-10. I bought the blue one. 148 miles over the weekend convinced me I made the right decision. Any one interested in a moderately used KLR or ST1300?

Well I talked to the dealer today. They are offering me $8000 on my multi which is enough to pay off the loan on it and get me on the Tenere. I also am thinking of the blue model over the black. I will know for sure on saturday! Very very excited. I am not going to be able to test ride because we just got about 7 inches of snow. I am not concerned as from what I have read and watched it seems great. The horse power is up over the multi, but the weight is a bit more. I am content and feel really good about the bike. Besides...not having to mess with the valves every 7500 is worth it! ::012::

Is it saturday yet?
