On the S10 80 is comfortable all day long but much over that the bike is not so happy. It can do it but just doesn't feel as good.

I averaged 47.7 doing backroads down to FL and 46.4 on the way back all highway averaging 80. No pillion but fully loaded with gear.
Since you bring up mpg my Tenere says I average 47+ but when figured out on paper it's more like 45

I dont know if its just my bike but my 2014 gen 2 model seems to cruise at 80-90mph a lot easier and less stressed than my older 2011 model did ..i know they altered the engine on the newer model making it a bit more free revving and smoother , and i,m running the same screen & wind deflectors from my old model so no change there ...has anyone else who has had both models noticed this ? ....

If I wanted to get good mpg I would cruise about 60mph where the bike will do about 60mpg....

....however I am not that bothered about mpg, but more bothered about the Feds so try to keep it to a speed where the bike is comfortable and I am unlikely to have a big problem with the law, this means in the UK 70 - 80mph when cruising, which the bike likes.

In France the speed limit is 130kph (about 82mph) which equates to an indicated 90, the S10 is still quite smooth at this pace, but mpg is considerably worse than at an indicated 80 mph (especially with all the luggage on) so this pretty much sets the pace.

Away from the land of the free ;) in the land of laws and regulations, also known as Germany, they have unrestricted sections of Motorway, the first time I encountered one on a ZZR1400 (ZX14R) I though I would be cruising at 150 all day long, soon realised the noise, buffeting and pathetic fuel range at this speed meant I was actually better off at around 110....

...on the S10 I still end up around 90mph even when no rules apply as the bike just feels at a natural cruise between 70 and 90, and a bit hurried at 3 figures.

Former LEO here. When we ran radar our general SOP was to ticket at 10 MPH and over. Anything less than 10 we did not want to go in front of the judge with. It would seem petty and we did not want to lose our credibility with the court.

With that said I stay around 8MPH over the speed limit. Love that cruise control!

Highways here in VA Interstates outside of metro areas are around 70mph.

I spend a great many hours on 81 and I can tell the is the methodology. I live dangerously with the cruise on 79. Also, Ya'll lockup folks for the weekend for anything 20mph+. Its a serious infraction, and should carry some heavy fines/points. But I've never seen any other state feel that is reasonable. Is there back history on why that is? Over zealous judges?

No, like anywhere else in the world, easy money! Nothing, zero, nada to do with your safety (while I agree that accidents are a real pain for the authorities), just plain easy cash machine on wheels.

I did nearly the same thing. On highways I would give up to 10 over, but 11+ I would stop. Out here in New Mexico the traffic enforcement business was always thriving, but law enforcement can be a bit sparse on highways. If you wish to speed this is a relatively good place to do it.

Generally, I don't do anymore than five over just to be on the safe side (of getting a ticket), plus, I don't want the added fuel consumption.

Freeway nominal for me is about 83 or so (true). Right now on the Tenere it's lower than that because I haven't yet figured out a good wind screen combo that's smooth and quiet at that speed. Apart from that, the bike is very happy at that speed, so I'm happy about that.

Guess this falls under the old LEO adage saying "9 You're fine, 10 you're mine" Having said that my bike just seems to naturally settle in between 70-80 per the GPS speed.

I thought the saying was "8 you're great, 9 you're mine!" ::019:: For parts of my IBA SaddleSore I had cruise at 93 and that tank of gas didn't last too long

As has been mentioned earlier in the thread much above 80 and it starts to shorten the tank range significantly, so 80's the cruising limit for me. Doesn't mean you can't have a quick rip up to 130 mph on those quiet stretches of finest German Autobahn. Mind you at only 130 mph you'll have 4 or 5 German saloon's up yer pooper queing up to be past...

However fast I think I can get away with. Mileage is rarely a consideration as it will always out perform my pick up. The bike serves as a time machine for me covering a lot of miles in a short period of time. Our gnarly winds probably dictate my speed more than anything.

I had a VW routan diesel for a rental over there I felt like I needed to be on the shoulder with the hazards on. Pedal mashed to the floor everywhere, just couldn't keep up with traffic.

It can be a bit of an eye opener at first until you get used to it, the difference in relative speed can be 70/80mph ! Everyone seems to just get on with it, though if it does go wrong I image it'll be on the TV news...

Wasn't that more about routing than speed? Talk about optimizing a route.

Speed limit in Montucky is 80 , I drive/ride at 70-75 during the day, at night drop another ten.
On a recent trip I returned on I-5 from Red Bluff to Woodland. I set the cruise control on 73 mph and it worked very well with dealing with traffic.
