I still say if looking at used bikes, it's quite different looking at a GSXR with 10K listed by a 27 year old, vs a Super Tenere with 10K listed by a fat ole fart like myself.

10K on a Tenere is like 10K on an F350.
10K on a GSXR is like 10K on a Mustang GT

So i started this post to try and convince myself to buy an S10 with 10k miles. Since i come from sportbikes this seems like a lot of miles to me ( especially for a bike that costs $10.5k). Looks like i should pull the trigger and stop worrying.
After breaking in two S10s I can say I've enjoyed the bikes much better after the 5K mark. Buying one with 10K means you've avoided waiting for the bike to reach its potential. You're buying one that's ready to go. My wife's has 19K and at 17 months old I still consider it a brand new bike. Go for it.

Hadn't seen that second one, i sent the seller a pm. Thanks.
Both are sweet bikes. The second one has barely been ridden. And has my favorite crash bars. I was waiting to get them at a discount someday.

Been trying like heck NOT to give Tabasco all my money. But he has my second favorite sump protector. (The OTHER frame mounted one) Built like a tank but looks like Roman Armor. Not nearly as good looking as the one he built for himself. :)

Heh, first time I was in his shop he told me he doubted anyone would pay the labor charges associated with duplicating his! It looks like a giant took his "regular" plate and squeezed like a lemon!

Agreed, my Tenere completely changed between 5k-6k miles. That is the true break-in milage.

I put on 10,000 miles in the first 10 weeks and since then have divided my time with some other bikes.
My Tenere now has 26,000 troublefree miles.

19,000 trouble free miles here. Would have more but working 70 hours a week in my own business and our riding season is rather short here. I really like this bike, it does everything I need .

Sail2xxs will probably have us all beat for a while. Seems like Salty is up over 50k too, not sure what he's up to. I'm at 43k w/o issues. After next summer I'll probably be over 60k easy.

I'm about a week away from hitting the 70k mile mark. Knowing that I would put a fair number of miles on the bike, I bought the extended warranty shortly before the original one expired. The bike has been trouble free with the exception of two recurring issues - headlight wiring harnesses and rear differential oil seals - all taken care of under warranty.

20,069 miles: right headlight wiring harness and differential oil seal
43,112 miles: differential oil seal
54,002 miles: right headlight wiring harness
61,971 miles: differential oil seal
67,538 miles: left headlight wiring harness

This time around, the tech (TJ at Romney Cycles) added an extra ground wire directly to the battery for the headlight harness. Based on experience thus far, it will take roughly 13-20k miles to see if this makes any difference. At Yamaha's insistence, the main wiring harness was replaced under warranty as well. Looking at the old main harness, neither of us could find any reason for doing this - there was no visible corrosion, overheating, etc. anywhere on the harness.

The oil seal issue is very puzzling - none of the three seals showed any nicks or damage, and each started to weep after approximately 20k miles. I do ride the bike offroad whenever I get the chance, and it is not unusual for it to be completely covered in mud by the end of the day. However, the third seal had a relatively "clean" life, which weakened our conviction that the seals were somehow being affected by dirt/grit getting in. In two instances differential oil was on the outer side of the differential, and the 3rd instance it was both on the innner and outer sides. I rode the bike approximately 1500 miles after noting the weeping the third time it happened, and the weep developed into a pea-sized droplet of differential oil which collected at the bottom of the differential.

I'm extremely impressed with the way the bike is holding up, and wouldn't trade it for anything else I've ridden. From an operating cost perspective it has been absolutely stellar, and from a reliability standpoint it has been awesome.

For anyone interested, I keep a maintenance spreadsheet for the bike and can send you a copy. Just pm me with your email address.

Chris

Hey Chris, great to hear you're still going strong. On the differential seals... I'm in Mexico now at 30,000 miles, had a seal replaced in San Diego at 22,000. I'm carrying a spare but maybe I should have 2! Looking at your results and mine, there seems to be about 20,000 miles between seals needing replacement. I wonder if this is going to be a wear item? Seal is cheap at $10, and the dealer would have charged me $145 to change it, if it hadn't been covered by extended warranty. Maybe something I need to learn how to do myself!

I don't off road as much as either Sail or DC, but I find it interesting about the diff seals. No issues on mine or the headlight harness so far. How often do you wash the bike, and how? Garden hose, pressure washer, etc? I've never washed mine.
