Re: 2014 Non ES Factory Heated Grips

I upgraded to the OEM heated grips on my 2014 today.
Purchased the four needed parts from http://www.georgiawatersports.com for $237 shipped to CA.
Thanks to Tupperware for sharing his copy of the Factory instructions.
I wanted to add an additional photo from the OEM service manual and video of how the wire is routed in the throttle housing.

Bad Link, I think you mean these: https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/koso-apollo-heated-grips

I'm in the same boat, looking for heated grips or trying to decide how to do my '15. Remember that the control for the heated grips is built into the ECU. You do need to pay extra for oem heated grips if you want to use the oem controls.

Many of us have picked up the OEM Yamaha parts for a little over $220. They are plug-n-play with the left handlebar switches and the display console.

The Oxfords and maybe other brands may have a little more heat, but will not plug-n-play because the resistances are different.

Thanks CW, and for merging with the main heated grip thread. ::008::

I would prefer to use plain elements and the grips I like, but find the appeal of the oem controls. :( Oh well, buying a heat-troller and grip elements comes close enough to buying the oem separate parts that I caved and ordered the oem parts. www.partshark.com is currently cheaper, costing $225.26 plus $16 shipping for me.

After typing this and nearly pulling the trigger on the parts, I realized that I don't actually know if the 'used '15 I bought has heated grips or not. It's a Std, so probably not, but the original owner could have done it as part of the purchase for all I know.

If the US dealers won't ship, where would you buy a fairing, cam chain, or other Yamaha part? Are you saying that you can't order 4 individual part numbers?

Having ordered the four parts a while back, I finally got around to installing them today. Had some difficulty with the heated grip throttle tube and the rear cable... until I realized that the throttle tube was broken, a piece that retains the cable had gotten broken off at some point, so the cable would not stay in position.

Well, F**k. :-[ Since I spent the cool morning hours working on the wife's bike and lunch time doing a Rumbux install for a nice guy from AZ, the hot part of the day was reserved for working on my bike. Not bad, only 100F in the garage. (I have got to add A/C to the garage on the next house!)

Removing the good throttle tube from the non-heated grip was easy. Getting the broken throttle tube out of the heated grip was more challenging. You can't get an air nozzle in there easily and you don't want to stress the heated grip much, or risk damage to the element. Oh, and it's glued to the throttle tube pretty nicely too. In the end, I used a hack saw to cut the cable end off the broken throttle tube, then scored the inside of the tube until it was juuuust close to being thru, then used the needle nose pliers to break out the tube from the heated grip. After the first few small pieces, the rest came out in a couple of big chunks, leaving the inside of the heated grip in excellent condition.

Since I had paid attention to the orientation of the cable to the throttle tube, it was easy to just press the two together and again I had a nice throttle tube with a heated grip on it to install. Fussed with the wire guide and wire orientation a bit, (thanks Al-n2it), lubed it all up and put everything back together. With the cables routed, tied down & plugged in, the bike fired up and recognized the grips just fine. Turned them on high and they heated up nicely. ::013::

Stick a fork in me, I'm done for today.

My control unit went on mine a few weeks ago and I replaced them with Oxfords so if anyone needs a grip or the throttle housing you can have them.

Hi guys Im having trouble with a 2015 Es Grey colour sold second hand low milage from Oliver's Motorcycles Brisbane Australia I bought a few months back. Cannot bring up the heated grips in the menu.
I found this image second post in a topic regards AuxLights . "4 pins is grips 3 is aux lights".

Is this fact regards the grips issue as I've both these connectors as shown in the image.
Thanks in advance.

My '15 has both those connectors unused and the heated grips work fine. The OEM equipped ones must be connected differently.

That's Gen I info. Gen II have two different connectors for the heated grips. smaller ones, gray if I recall correctly. Do your grips have wires coming from them? W/O the heated grips, the menu does not show them, only shows teh menu 'pages'. I'm not sure non-US ES models came with standard heated grips.

Grips have wires in black sheath exiting from undersides just like the 60th aniversary bike of Skidooos.
Menu only shows pages.
FWIW, Yamaha Australia lists Grip Heaters as optional for both the standard and ES versions. If you're seeing the wires at the bottom of the left grip and bottom of the throttle switch housing, it sounds like you have heated grips in place, but they are not plugged in and recognized by the computer. Can you tell if they are Yamaha grips or aftermarket ones? Aftermarket grips don't have the same resistance and can't be easily wired to the oem grip heater wiring. Because the resistance is wrong, the ECU won't recognize them and allow control thru the menu. You can still wire them to power and use a separate controller though.

First thing I would do is find the small two wire plugs that go to the grip heaters under the right side battery access panel. You may have to remove the upper panel as well to find these wires/plugs. Check to see if they are even being used or plugged in correctly. If they are plugged in as normal with OEM plugs, they should work.

My grip heaters just disappeared from the menu. I hope this isn't from one of the grips dying. I really don't want to buy replacements. I'd probably just get oxfords, but the factory wiring is nice a clean, and I'd rather be able to just run them from the triggers.

I just had the same exact thing happen to me on Sunday on my gen 2 ES.

Does anyone have any idea as to why this happened or what caused it?

Well, it could be because they are broken down, as ErikV write, then the "control" don't "see" them because of missing resistance, and will take them away from the menu.
Have you tried to set the dashboard to default?
Maybe they will appear again, if they just are deleted from the menu, by operator, by mistake ;)
