The cigarette lighter is only good for minimal cell phone or GPS charging. The wiring to it is good as a source of "switched power" to turn a relay on and off when the bike has power.

Thanks Don in Lodi.
Can you recommend a more suitable wire to connect to.

You will ultimately want to add other electrical accessories, so see the posts in this thread, which is a sticky in the Electrical sub-forum tech area.

Here's one option of many available. The nice part is this one has specific instructions for plug-n-play, so it directly answers your question.

Re: 2014 Non ES Factory Heated Grips

Has anyone plugged aftermarket heated grips into their 2014+?
My bike came with aftermarket grips and I would like to use them. Can anyone take an ohm reading of their OEM grips? I'm assuming it's a 2 wire heating system?
Thanks so much

The grips came in a box or installed? Are you wanting the amperage draw on your grips compared to OEM?

Do a search and you ought to find somebody - seems I remember such a conversation.
iirc - They did have a big difference in resistance and had to figure out the wiring to get the bike console to play with them.

The grips were already installed when I bought my bike. I will check the ohm resistance on the ones I have (not sure of the brand) and see if I can make them plug and play. If nobody knows the ohms, I'll check the ones on my FJR this winter.

Thanks. I've tried a few searches but not seeing anything yet. Now that I know someone else posted something, I'll keep digging. Thanks.

Since you're a new guy and did try . . .

Turns out that I had it backward, the OEM heated grips are 1.5 ohms and SOME aftermarkets are 7 ohms. See these threads:

Thanks so much!!
It looks like everything I need. I looked thru some photos and the grips I have are the Hot Grips Model 475, 525 or 575. I have a Fluke meter and will measure tomorrow after work.

I measured my Hot Grips and they are 9 ohms. I guess I will be replacing these for OEM grips this winter.

Can you use the controller that came with the grips? You don't have to run them through the bike's system.

I can and will use them until the snow flies but then I'm pulling the bike apart over the winter. The grips have a toggle hi/ low switch but I like the OEM system being integrated into the bike. Then where the hole was drilled for the hi/ low switch, I will put my Warm and Safe heat controller for my electric jacket liner.
Now if only Yamaha had a plug for electric clothing and temps could be set like OEM grips.

Re: 2014 Non ES Factory Heated Grips

I've wanted to add the heated grips and finally ordered the parts from Stadium Yamaha. Total price for the set is now $220.64 plus shipping, so $233.61 total.

Re: 2014 Non ES Factory Heated Grips

My guess is the Yamaha 2014 OEM heated grips would fit my 2013 Super Tenere. Can someone confirm? Thanks.

They won't have the dash interface for control going onto the older model. Weren't there factory heated grips made for the older bikes? They would have their own stand alone controller. I can confirm the Oxford Adventure heated grips are a clean install and have worked very well in the short while I've had them.

Any warranty with these? Mine stopped working last week, noticed a burning smell after starting the bike. Then during the ride when I press the Menu button the Grip Warmer screen no longer appears. I checked the fuses and all good. Installed about 14 months ago.

Re: 2014 Non ES Factory Heated Grips

Bought a Mulitmeter and checked the grips based on the Service Manual. The right grip (grey connector) came up 0.0. The left grip (black connector) came up 1.4 which is within the stated range. Gonna replace it and looks like the prices have gone up.
For reference here are the ranges in the Service Manual:

Grip warmer resistance in Ohms:
Left 1.21-1.48
Right 1.17-1.43

Not sure if this was the cause of your problem but Yamaha recommends lubricating the wires on the throttle grip regularly. Reason being is inside the housing the wire is coiled up and every time you twist the throttle it sort of pulls the wires. Some type of grease keeps the wires from binding and causing damage. Poor design in my opinion but as long as it's lubed it should work I guess haha.
