Read before you tell me I'm doing it wrong. I know the process to check the oil. But; I'm sometimes not getting a level in the glass. Will run the bike then let sit and nothing will show. Its seems to be a sometime problem. Been talking to the shop but you know how that can go.

check this thread out you may have forgotten about. i've pretty much given up on checking the oil in the sight glass. i checked it one morning in CO before I rode the hardest i've pushed the S10, and there was nothing showing. Yet I had high confidence I had enough oil. Don't stress over it and ride it like you stole it...

One thing I have noticed is the sight glass is very sensitive. What I mean is if the bike is not completely level you won't get a correct reading or any reading.

It is sencitve about how plumb the bike is. I've got almost 12000 miles on it and try to check it over regular. First time I have seen this. Checked this morning cold and was at top line. Got to work let sit 10 mins and nothing.was plumb best I could

In general, I haven't noted extreme variations like this. Doubt anything is wrong, but it is odd. Is the commute very short?

On the BMW boxers, putting the bike on the sidestand during the "settle period" seemed to help - the theory was that if you immediately went to the centerstand, the oil cooler wouldn't drain back to the sump. Might try this if you're a centerstand parker at work.

I did talk to a buddy that runs a GS and that's what he said; so will try that a few times and see. The only thing that worry me is that its back and forth. Makes me think something may be floating around and stopping the oil from draining back down. Has anyone seen a flow semantic; or anything to show the oil route. Just thinking out loud.

I have not had any "issues" with my sight glass.

Besides at initial fill, I check it with the engine warm, usually at the gas pumps or in my garage on the center stand. I don't over think it, that said I have never had what I consider to be an erroneous reading.

The one time it was low, it was accompanied by intermittent illumination of the oil level warning light. Hundreds of miles per day at high speed (western interstates) it was real. Added oil to the full mark, problem solved.

I have peaked at it when cold or after sitting extended periods and it is inconsistent. When checked warmed up, level ground on center stand, no issues.

I have had similar issues with inconstant sight window readings of the oil level. The problem for me seems to be that I was putting the bike on the center stand and as Offcamber said above

Too true! Very Very sensitive!
I no longer check it on the center stand. I put it on the side stand and then go around to the right side. I hold the right grip and the brake and then tip the bike upright while watching the sight window. You can feel when the bike is strait up and down very easily. That is where you want to take your reading. If you tilt it back and forth just a little, you will be shocked how much the level in the window changes! ??? I have been doing this for a month or two now and always get consistent readings. I can detect the small amount that I am burning on long high speed runs and add more when it gets down 1/2 qt of so. (after about 2 to 3K miles of 80 MPH all day running)
Give this method a try. I would be interested to hear if it works as well for others as it does for me.

Put the right amount in when you do an oil change. If the shifting feels crappy (and you are SURE your shift shaft is clean) before your next oil change interval, throw it up on the centerstand and add oil until she is 2/3 in the window.

I've been doing this for 21k miles of beating the ever living piss out of this thing. She loves it.

Hi,
Basically I find the sight glass useless for determining how much oil to put in. I put in the 3.4 liters with a filter change and I'm done. After a ride, not just sitting there idling, when I get home and put it on the center stand it is just about always in the middle of the sight glass. Dry Sump Motor.

Almost 33,000 miles on mine... And I've gotten to the point I just don't worry about it much.

For some reason my S-10 like 3.6 liters of oil to get the right "middle of the sight glass" view after an oil change and proper warming up and re-checking, etc., and that includes pre-filling the new oil filter prior to spinning it on, etc. Basically mine just seems to like about 3,600 cc's.

After an oil/filter change I just check it as per the owners and/or service manual's instructions from time to time and that's it. Every now and then it cooks off a 100cc's or so from a high-speed slab run, but other than that it stays pretty stable. I checked the volume of what was drained with some of the early oil changes in the bike's life, and it was always close to what needed to go in, so no worries.

Like everything else about the Super Tenere, seems like the best way to handle it is just ride the thing and not worry about much, if anything. ::008::

What a machine... :)

Howdy,
OK Dallara, I've seen this mentioned many times before about filling the oil filter prior to installation, since the filter is horizontal how do you keep the oil from running back out, and if it does run out to some degree is that the extra .2 liters that you put in?

I pre fill mine to. If your quick and it spins on you won't loss but a drop or two. Ain't sure if it makes a difference. But like the idea of the oil getting back in the system as quickly as it can

I make sure I drain her as completely as possible at oil changes and add the recommended amount. Unless I find an oil leak, I just don't worry about it. When it was new this troubled me and I drained the oil and measured it again. Well guess what, it was what it was supposed to be. Don't sweat it. If you add oil every time it appears low in the glass, you are going to overfill it.
