Has anyone ridden the Hatfield McCoy trails? http://www.trailsheaven.com/ These look like a lot of fun.

I've been thinking about trying to get down there for a quick weekend ride. Any experiences or suggestions would be helpful.

I have seen the episode on Fisher's ATV on Outdoor channel about this place. It looks like fun, but I thought it was geared more towards ATV's and dirt-bikes. I'm curious to hear about it when you go.

I am pretty sure that some of the trails are big bike friendly. If you look at their site the trails are color coded and IIRC, there are at least three levels of difficulty if not more. No first hand knowledge but if you are registered at ADVrider try posting to the Adventure in Ohio thread. I bet they can give you more info.

I've been a few times and I'm going again in October. I'm taking my YZ, but there is plenty to do on a bike bike.

I suggest the area around Ashland Resort. That area has the "outlaw" trails and 2 Hatmac systems.

There is plenty of active mining with interstate width haul roads, logging roads, backwoods twisties with no center lines, etc.

Can you ride a S10 on the trails? I could, and I'd like to, but I would not do it alone and I would not do it in wet conditions. The green trails are the ones that get used the most and can be pretty torn up. However, there are miles and miles of green trails that are very well groomed gravel roads for gas or mining operations.

In general, it is rocky. Some areas are solid rock. i can't think of any green or blue trails that wouldn't be doable in dry conditions, but you better be good and the consequences could be very high.

All that said, if I were going there with only my big bike, I would explore the area and stay off the hatmac trail system. Save the $50 for beer.

Seasoned veterans of the area will say that the outlaw trails are just as good or better. i agree in some respects, but they are totally unmarked and without a guide, you will be lost all day. The outlaw trails on a S10 is a bad idea unless you have plenty of help, imo.

Rockhouse is fun. i think I've ridden every mile of it.

I have some videos and pics. I'll try and post some up.

Thanks Bloodline! Nice videos! If everything comes together, I'll try to get to the Ashland area with the S10 in the fall. I'll check ADVRider too.

Our group will be at Ashland Oct 20. No big bikes this time, but we will be camping and cooking. Come hang out.

Sounds good! Lets see what timing looks like when we get closer to October. At the moment, I'm lucky if I can plan more than 3 days out! :D

Love Hatfield & McCoy. Here's a video from the Little Coal River trail network from back in our ATV days.

Hatfield McCoy ATV Ride

Still wonder why I'm called Dirt_Dad?

Little Coal River is a fantastic H&F network. I would not hesitate to ride the S10 on any of the green trails of this network on a dry day. Might think twice if it's rained a lot recently or before doing some of the blue ones.

There's a reason they call Hatfield & McCoy "Trails Heaven." It's an awesome place to ride.

Be certain to stay well clear of active haul roads and mines themselves. The coal truck drivers often have NO CHOICE in where to go should they meet you and you would be placing both yourself and them betwixt a rock and hard place. Most mines are secured, but there are back doors that could be accidently breached. Heavy equipment operators on site simply don't play well with others, not to mention the blasting that occurs a couple of times a day.

Given the interest that's being shown, what do you guys think of a H&M Green Trail S10 group ride?

Or I could put together a green trail ride and save everyone the fee. Having lived in southern WV for 5+ decades, I know a road or two here, there and yonder. Just wouldn't have the H&M monniker.
