Just curious...

Has anyone else noticed how there doesn't seem to be anymore reports of the "hard starting" issue?

Have all the bikes out there that had such "hard starting" suddenly cured themselves? Are the planets just mystically aligned correctly? Did Yamaha somehow *beam* a cure to all the ECU's out there? ::025::

Or is it perhaps that owners who had trouble have just learned how to start their bikes? ???

Been reading about it for a while. Had it happen for the first time a few weeks ago after installing some aux lights and cycling the key on and off a bunch. I did the WOT thing and after quite a few tries, it started. Havent had the issue again though.

I think there is just enough info about it on here now that we can figure it out with a quick search.

Good point on not hearing much about that. Heck, you could even extrapolate that thought into any topic here...

Been pretty quiet.

What I noticed is that the only issues that ever came up when these bikes were brand new, are STILL the only issues. (Spokes, wiring harness, hard start)
I keep thinking that sooner or later the weaknesses of the bike would start to be exposed. You know, the ones related to HARD miles or LOTS of miles.
We now have lots of examples of HARD miles and several examples of high mileage.

And still, nothing.

Seriously, that's just remarkable. It would be if this were some multiyear production bike that finally had the weaknesses refined out. But we are all beating up on an original clean sheet design. Again, that's outstanding.

I've had lots of great bikes. I've never had one I believe in more.

I actually had a hard start problem just last week. I didn't worry about it because my bike had been sitting for nearly 20 days. I figured she was just playing hard to get. That's the longest I've ever let it sit....and the first time I've ever had the issue. No problems since.

Had it again today. Bike had sat for 6 days. No key cycling during that time. Took a long time to start at WOT. Amazed that the battery and starter will take it. This is 8 or 9 times that the bike has done it. BTY it is reflashed. No other vehicle I have ever owned has done this.

No, they probably just got tired of you (Dallara) being a smart ass about it so they don't dare mention it anymore. ::025::

I had the hard start problem 2 weeks ago.. The key had been cycled several times while replacing a Denali aux light and the bike had sat for almost 2 weeks. It took me 3 days before I got it started again. WOT won't do it. Eventually, I had to charge the battery and pull the EFI fuse. Even then, it did not want to start readily. This is the third time for me in 2+ years of ownership.

have you changed out your battery yet? I thought I had escaped the dreaded hard start but low and behold, changed out the tired battery and BAM the new battery would just turn and turn, with no chance of starting. it is a good thing it was a new battery, cause I pushed it really hard. It finally started with WOT but not easily, and had me really guessing if it would. I have not had any problems since.

So let me get this straight...Dallara started a thread for people to report hard start issues?

Didn't see that one coming.

For the record, 43K+ Tenere miles, 3 hard start issues.

I once had a neighbor who would cuss when a commercial came on TV and cuss the the whole time until the show come back on.
I couldn't tell if he hated commercials or just loved to cuss! ;D

Well as it happens, I had a hard start episode just the other day...

Heading south from Uyuni, Bolivia toward the Argentina border, there's 120 miles of dirt, which include a sandy stretch in the middle of it. Sand on a loaded Super Tenere is not my favourite thing in the world... I had to get off and push, and at almost 13,000 feet, you run out of breath pretty fast. Your clutch/throttle coordination also goes to shit... so I stalled a couple of times. You can hear the engine is not very happy, pinging a bit. Bolivian gas is supposed to be 88 octane, and I was adding some octane booster just to be on the safe side, but maybe not enough.

After the second time I stalled it, it didn't want to start. Shit. Middle of nowhere, stuck in sand, last thing I needed. I just parked it, took a deep breath (actually many deep breaths) and walked away and left it for 15 minutes. When I came back it didn't start straight away so I gave it WOT for about 20 seconds (seemed like 20 minutes!) and gradually it caught an fired. Phew!

She is overdue for a service, getting one in Santiago - plugs have 26,000 miles on them. Last set looked fine at 21,000 though, so I don't really think that's the cause of my problem.

Super Tenere in the sand

2 hesitant starts but that's all.

Wife had a hard start on the Toyota though.

Does that count?

Nothing like that... Really pretty simple. All the arm-waving, "sky is falling" wailing to file complaints with NHTSA over on the "Cooked Headlamp Harness" thread got me to thinking about the "hard starting" reports. At one point there were some folks so up-at-arms about the "hard starting" thing they were talking about NHTSA complaints to force a Yamaha recall, etc., but all that died down to nothing.

Just wondered why is all... ;)

Well, some say I cuss too much... But I've been working on it! Don't cuss nearly as much as I did 30 or 40 years ago! ::025::

But I do hate commercials... So much I hardly watch television. Lots of better things to do. ::001::

I've only had the one episode over a year ago and my bike regularly sits for weeks without starting. Battery tender keeps the battery up. 8)

Hey Dallara,

You gotta admit, it was like an ant bed that used to be viral with activity, but now it looked crusty and abandoned.

So you kicked it. :)
