The FJR got the gear indicator back in 2006 with the re-design. At this time, Yamaha spent the bucks to put a sensor on the shift drum. They cheaped out on the S10 revision. Perhaps it is more difficult for some reason.

Actually, there is very, very little in common between the FJR and S10. I'm sure they share a few parts for stuff like fasteners, but otherwise, they're completely different bikes.

The switch gear on the '14 S10 is from the '13 FJR. I'm trading my '13 FJR for a '14 S10 and will eventually sell my '12 S10. I'm disappointed in the way the gear indicator works, but do like the rest of the package. I actually like the all LCD cockpit. Oh well, I'll live with this one "issue" over all the known and yet unknown issues on the new 1200GS LC.

@Big Blu - We're just whining about some pretty trivial stuff, huh? :D

@Mingo - Color me surprised then. I had been under the impresion that the '13 FJR did the dash thing when stopped too. That is news to me. And does make one wonder why there is a difference between the two, as much is shared in hard parts between the '13 FJR and '14 S10.
I don't see any whining here, just facts a feeling about a cheaped out piss poor design from Yamaha. They did better on the FJR, and hell, we deserve nothing but the best! ::025::

Hilarious.
Please Old Man Winter, you've had your turn. Now beat it. It's making folks coo coo.

If our 2010-2013 had had this gear indicator, Yamaha would have removed it on the 2014. Lol

Arguably, when the clutch is in you're not in gear. ::021::
Right, but when you are in a stop sign, with the clutch in, at the time to release it, you would like to know which gear you are in.

Re: 2014 ST GEAR INDICATOR

Thank you all for your comments, they are very helpful and appreciated.
In my opinion, technology is here to make our life easier and safer. and if safer means more gadgets and things to review in the dash, then Im ok with it. My last two motorcycles had the gear indicator and for me it became a must in a new bike, also, at least, the Traction Control and ABS.
I´m sure sometime ago, the old school was not happy when the speedometer was introduced, why do we need something telling me the mph?, or the tachometer, why do I need this gadget if I have my senses to know if I´m revving too much? or the ABS or the Traction Control, or the Cruise Control, or the Tire Pressure sensor, or the heated grips, or the unified braking system, or the ABS with the leaning sensor, or the active suspension, again, in my opinion if these aids are going to make a highly dangerous activity, a little less dangerous, then I welcome all possible help.

Re: 2014 ST GEAR INDICATOR

I feel the exact opposite antiwaki.
I do not mind comfort bits on my car, AC, CC, ABS.....but I hate them on my bike. I ride to get away from daily life. I ride to test my senses. I ride to challenge my abilities. I ride to smile. I do not ride to be safe and careful.

I ride most of the time in TC-off and always that way in dry conditions. I wish my bike would remember that setting all of the time, more like a switch. I wish ABS were switchable without the center stand rigmarole.
I have no use for a gear indicator. I do not hate them, if it were on there that is fine. But if it is going to be on there I would want it to read what gear the TRANSMISSION is in at all time.
Just because the clutch is in does NOT change that the transmission IS or is NOT in a gear. But that said, I always use the trans gear to slow down and that includes 1st gear so I know what gear I am in at a stop light/sign. I do occasionally try to hit 7th gear erroneously but that has never hurt anything so no stress.

I have no use for ES or even CC...I like a throttle lock for its simplicity and durability.
I have no issues with performance enhancers like FI and computer ignitions....

If all I could buy to keep riding was a '40 HD flat head 18 over with drum brake on the rear and no front....I would STILL ride and ride it as hard as I could. If all I could buy was a Honda 90 step thru I buy that and ride the snot of that too.

That's easy to do. There is info on this forum on installing a simple on/off switch in the ABS circuit at the fuse. It's just a switch of your choice, an inline fuse holder, the fuse from the fuse block and some spade connectors. There is a $60 kit that will supply all this for you, but the same switch can be had off ebay for cheap. Or just choose one you like. They use a bar mounted switch. (I use that same switch to control one of my aux lights.)

It's switchable to off, on the fly. But to get it back on, you have to move the switch to on, then stop and cycle the ignition key.

I don't need to escape from my daily life. ;)

I'd say your reasons for riding are shared by most riders, but if you going to exclude "safe and careful", your riding days will be far fewer then most others. just say'n...

Then you do not work for my boss and have the pain I do.
My life is great from a family and spiritual standpoint. It is a train wreck from an employment and health standpoint.
Riding has always been a mind cleansing act for me. It is freeing and stress relieving.

But as with everything we all do things for different reasons.
I have never found a career that I enjoyed that actually paid much. I must be doing something wrong. I have done lots of things I liked doing but they do not usually pay anywhere near what my construction trades have paid. Body and brain and paid its toll from that though.

I did not say I exclude safe and careful. I said "I do not ride to BE safe" There is a difference.
My riding career has been 45 years so far and include street bikes, MX racing including national events, desert racing, road racing at multiple tracks and lots of general hooliganism. All without ABS/TC/gear indicators/CC/ and other crap.

Re: 2014 ST GEAR INDICATOR

Kmac, you're a hoot. :)

If I went 3 or 4 days off a bike, for whatever reason, my wife would actually insist I go for a ride. She SO knows me.
And I never needed any of this technology on wheels. I've said it before, this bike would be pure science fiction when I was growing up.

But, :)
We only had 3 channels on TV too. Which means it was a bit different experience to escape reality for a couple of hours back then, than it is today. Big screens in HD and Dolby Digital home theaters...........
The Wizard of OZ whisked me away as a little kid. Made a heck of an impression. Just like that CT70 and TS50. But today's Fifth Element or The Matrix is a far richer experience. And so are these machines of marvel.

Nothing wrong with riding in the rain and being able to do so much more aggressively because technology provides a bit of a safety net. I find THAT a bit richer too.
Oh, and I wish you didn't have to work so hard. But it sounds like you've been well rewarded! Cheers to that.

I have a '13 FJR which shares the same LCD display with the new S10 and the gear indicator works the way it should, it's on at all times.
Exactly. I LOVE having the gear indicator on my Gen3 FJR but mostly so I know when I'm in 5th. On my '04 FJR I was shifting into 6th constantly for the entire 9 years I owned it. I haven't found myself doing that as much on the S10 because it has 6 gears and less power. When you're at the top of 5th and 6th it's working harder and you can feel it through the bike.

I guess I would say the 'new' way the '14 S10 shows gear selection is better than nothing by a long shot but not as good as it could be. I'd have been happy as a clam if the Gen 1 FJR had it.

It's not a big deal, but if Yamaha is gonna add a gear indicator, why not do it properly and add a gear position sensor like every other bike that has a gear indicator.. Do we really need to give moto journos one more reason to crap on the S10?

It's a personal philosophy of mine, either do it right or don't do it at all.. half measures make you look like an amateur and leave a bad impression on others.

Having said that, I have a deposit on a '14 S10 ES. I'd just have to adjust, like I do now, I glance at the gear indicator before I pull the clutch in with my current setup with my GI Pro on my '12 S10.

My feeling exactly, why settle for mediocrity?
