Phil,
Was this statement in the manual or were you paraphrasing? Our 49 states manual and the Euro manual as well as the service manual do not have it.

Oils of diesel spec of CD or ANY oil higher than quality specified or oils labeled "energy conserving II" or higher are not spec'd either.
Our manual has this specification only:

SAE 10W30, 10W40, 10W50, 15W40, 20W40, 20W50
API service grade SG type or higher, JASO standard MA.

Nothing is stated regarding Commercial grade oils, which because of their more stringent standards are superior to SG oils.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Cali manual was different, but it WOULD seem odd.

No worries other than a lot of people here think what they read on the internet is gospel, so it should be cleared up.

Paul

By the way, congrats on the great year you're having. ;D

Actually, it is in our owners manual. Not in the spec section, but in the how-to.

I know what I read and what has worked for me about the Rotella oil, but just really curious since I do not ever remember reading such a strong warning to NOT use this type of oil.

I'll be using the Rotella T6 5w-40 Synthetic in mine.

However, I've had some Rotella Dino 15w-40 sitting around for a year that I keep forgetting to use on the ST1300 so I used that for the 1st oil change.

DON'T PANIC, I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE THINKING... But, I shook it real good before I put it in so I'M GOOD. ;D

Oh hell, why not.......

and then there's the age old debate of oil change interval. The book calls for every 4000 miles on oil and, heaven forbid, every 8000 miles for the filter. EEK!!!!!!

:D :D :D
Firefight,
I used to know a guy driving a Honda ST1100. He had it since new and every other oil filter change or so he would change oil. I think it went like 15k miles on oil and 7k or so for filter only. When he sold his strong runnig STeed, he had over 150k on it!!! Just saying!!!

And a tongue in cheek with emoticons at the bottom somehow made you think I was in any way concerned or serious. Dude, it's an oil thread. There is no way on God's green Earth you will get consensus, agreement, validation, or anything. ALL I have done is typed in what the manual says. To each his/her own beyond that. I have not paraphrased or added any of my opinion to the data I gave. I merely copied it. Do with it as you will.

Oil threads are for stirring dino oil, or synthetic, chiming in on oil filter uses and changes, and let's now add the all important CRUSH WASHER debate while we are at it!!!!!

Wait for it....

Here it comes....

:D ;) :) ;D :mad: :( :eek: 8) ??? ::) :p :-[ :-X :-\ :-* O:)

Okay - now I have a question/concern!!!!

I have used Rotella T (CG grade) in numerous motorcycles as it is suitable for a wet-clutch. But reading this above goes totally against that!!

Yesterday I changed my oil and once again used the Rotella T 15W-40. Have I done wrong? Do I need to change it out ASAP?

I have been using Rotella for years in motorcycles and trucks. My 06 KLR since new. No oil burning (usage) between changes or clutch problems. Great oil for motorcycles with a wet clutch and smooth shifting. 8)

I've used Yamalube for twenty years and never had a Yam use oil. Use synthetic if you feel you must or whatever's cheap if you change your oil every two weeks. I usually change oil and tires about the same time, 5K miles or so and I have never had a smoker or a problem.

I went with the Yamalube for the first change. It's good oil too but I will change to Rotella from here on due to I use the same in all my motors and have had zero oil related problems. Most name brand oils these days fit the bill. They have improved leaps and bounds.

I think the cleanest looking oil on the market is Valvoline. I don't know if it is better but it sure looks good enough to drink. :)

X3 - it's all that ever goes in my bikes. Nice to know that any Wallyworld or truck stop will have a jug when you're on the road and need to change the oil.
