For those with OEM heated grips and Kaoko Cruise Control

Hi, all:

Thought I'd fill a tiny bit of this rainy Saturday with the installation of my Kaoko cruise control, which arrived yesterday. The installation kit comes with three washers which the instructions say are to be used when installing with the OEM heated grips. I can't seem to get the cruise control installed whether using these washers or not; no matter what, when I tighten the bolt for the bar-end weight, the throttle binds immediately. Even when I back the Kaoko friction nut all the way off before tightening, it binds.

A couple questions:

1. The instructions say to insert the thrust washer inside the handlebar tube prior to fitting the Kaoko kit. They do not specify whether the smaller shoulder of that washer should face inside the handlebar tube or toward the friction nut. Anyone know which is correct (I tried both, and neither improved the binding problem). The photo on the instruction sheet is very blurry, so I can't tell if the smooth face of the thrust washer should face into the handlebar or away from it.

2. I assume the three provided washers are to be placed inside the handlebar tube, to provide an earlier stop which pushes the Kaoko kit away from the handgrip. Is this correct? However, again, whether I placed the washers inside the handgrip, on the outside of the bar end, or didn't use them at all, the same binding problem occurred.

Am I missing something really obvious here? The installation instructions are very, very simple, and this should take about thirty seconds, I'd think. I'm reluctant to add additional washers, as I'm not sure the bolt would then have much thread to grip to hold the whole thing together.

Thanks!

I had the exact same issue. Use the provided longer screw, add all the washers from the kit, go get one or two more of the same washers and add until you get what you need. I ended up needing one extra over and above that which was provided. There's plenty f thread in there to do the job. Don't forget to blue loctite the bolt before putting it in.

7,000 miles since my install I have not had to touch it and it has continued to work flawlessly.

Hmm. My kit (from Adventure Designs) didn't come with a longer bolt. Just the Kaoko kit and the washers, and a little 2mm Allen for the grub screw. Wonder if Home Depot will have a bolt of the right length/diameter -- guess a trip to the hardware store is in my future!

Any idea on whether the shoulder on the thrust washer should face into the handlebar or away from it, toward the friction nut?

Thanks for the info!

Thanks, Phil!

Went out to the garage, found a slightly longer bolt, threw on one more washer, and bingo! All's well sorted, and the kit works as advertised (well, when standing in the garage, anyway).

If I'm heading to your neck of the woods (I have folks in Sacramento), remind me that I owe you a pint . . .

I just put mine on today and had the same problem. I shaved down the friction washer on the smaller side of the washer and added 2 extra washers inside and worked fine then. The instructions stunk I found. They never mentioned the 3 washers that came with it, I just figured it out that I need the spacers.

I didn't worry about the longer bolt, I just used blue Loctite. One extra washer did the trick. Thanks to all on the forum.

My kit had the longer bolt and the three washers included like the other members on the list. I assembled the machined spigot toward the handle bar and tightened the bolt but found there wasn't enough clearance.
I removed it measure the combined thickness of the three washers add .020 and machined it off the friction washer.
Reassembled it without the washers.
Its really nice to give the right hand a rest once and awhile.

Thanks for the advice everybody..I had similar problems installing mine as well. It bound every time. I saw that the instructions say the three washers are to be used with the heated grips but I don't have heated grips. Going to try using them as see what happens. If I tightened the long bolt down too much everything bound up. If I loosened it up then the end weight would just spin a long with the thrust washer. I'll try the washers and see what happens....very frustrating! But thanks for the advice..!
