Last April I was riding in the Mojave with a bunch of Rayhyde people.
I did a highly scientific test :)) during one ride.
It was 95f+ so after doing quite a few desert miles then a rapid road section (80mph+)
we stopped for a water break and I was parked beside a new 1200gsa
I reached down & touched my final drive (quite warm-not hot) then a reached over to feel the gsa's drive
the owner saw this and yelled at me to be carefull not to burn myself ::005::
His was SMOKING HOT
I don't worry about mine any more ::021::
Yea that sounds right even in April it will get above 90f. Damn unbearable though in August when it was an honest 120F where I work. Thermometer in shade. But something like that is almost unridable. I worry as much about tires delaminating, wether I need to worry or not ,there is always a huge increase in tread on the highways in the Mojave in summer, and not just big rig recaps at that! As for the shaft, seems I myself have not heard of one catastrophic failure yet.

No problem - the final drive's the same as what's in the Vmax, so no need to worry on it being a weak point in the bike.
This came up on another thread and I spent some time with the parts fiches. Sorry to disagree, but I think this is urban legend. Other than some design similarities, the two final drives are completely different and other than minor stuff like fasteners, they don't share a single common part.

I am on my second S-10. Both bikes seem to run super hot when compared to my gold wing. The wing, as you all know is much heavier, and delivers more power and torque than a tenere. Both my tenere's run hotter in 50 degree weather than the wing fully loaded, riding 2-up, on a 100 degree day. I have also wondered about this, but history tells us that the tenere is not going to damage itself. I've used the yamaha lube, and also tried Amsoil 75w90, and could not detect any difference.
My first tenere was an early 2012, and had a loud whine at cruise speed, and this was my main reason for trading it. My new 2014 has a much lesser whine that I can live with. I am sure the old one has not "eaten itself", but I just couldn't listen to this noise any longer.
I also have a concours 14 that does not run nearly as hot as the tenere's final drive. The fact that some members report less heat is interesting. I'm not going to worry about it.
