Anyone place your hand on the final drive housing after a long ride?
I was shocked to find it was VERY HOT?
So hot, you could not keep your hand on it. ???

I did yesterday... I could have cooked an egg on it.... I have a laser temp gauge, im going to check it next time... I'm guessing mine was maybe 150-170.. If I held my hand close but didnt touch it and you could feel the radiant heat... But it WAS 110* F out...... LOL

Re: Finale Drive Temp

The final drive sucks up 10% or more of the transmitted power. The designers have put cooling fins on the rear housing. Not surprising that it gets warm.

Re: Finale Drive Temp

Not as warm as the cylinders just below top dead center where the oil comes in contact!

My 05 FJR was very hot (exact temp unknown) when new but now is cooler. still warm though. Don't know if you can compare the two but some racecars use coolers and fans on there diff's.

Re: Finale Drive Temp

I am glad I finally found this post. I was starting to get concerned about how hot my differential has been getting. I even changed the oil out again as a precaution.

Re: Finale Drive Temp

this is going to sound crazy but maybe just maybe it has something to do with all the gears in there spinning around and the friction caused by that?

its just a idea crazy as it sounds but who knows ::024::

I think if Nick Sanders(sp) road over 40k miles in some god awful conditions, I'm not going to worry about the temp.. ::021::

Re: Finale Drive Temp

I compared my temp to a early model concours while traveling with him. The concours wa a little cooler so much so I didn't snatch my hand back like the S10. Not concerned about it but if it starts leaking then I will worry.

There might be a temp difference if the bike as more use/mileage verus a new bike with low mileage. Lower temp, high mileage vs higher temp, low mileage.

I've had two other shaft driven bikes, a 2002 Kawasaki Mean Streak and a 2010 Triumph Thunderbird 1700 (still have the latter). The final drives all get quite hot, no material difference from my S10. I haven't ever checked the diff on my truck after a long drive, but imagine it gets hot too. That power lost to a shaft drive (versus chain or belt) has to be going somewhere, and the somewhere is friction that results in heat. But, just like pistons in the engine, the final drive is made to handle that heat...just change the oil with good quality stuff from time to time.

Wow buddy. I am glad you are brilliant and personally know all about the Yamaha final drive. I am glad someone posted this originally and I was able to find it. Any time I find anything I find strange I am going to look into it. If you don't care to read the post then don't.

Im sorry im not brilliant i just don't find it strange that an aluminum casing with steel gears inside gets hot if you make the gears go round and round ::013::
