Not the adventure I expected.

Too long a story for iPhone typing, so I'll be brief. Wife's helmet was stolen while we were at lunch today in Damascus, VA. Police were great. Big thumbs up to Lt Turner who loaned me a helmet to go get another. It's been an expensive day and we've had to back track 150 miles to pick up another Bluetooth unit tomorrow. We are actually back in the same hotel room tonight that we were in last night. Dealer here is charging the unit for us tonight so it's ready for s to pick up in the morning.

Like I said. This is not the adventure I expected. But still an an adventure and I'll make the best of it.

Before you ask... no, deductible is too high for insurance to cover.

Yes, since this is over $200 it is a felony.

Learning experience, now you know to carry your expensive helmets in with you.

Yep. Hard to argue against that point.

Sounds painful financially, in time, and aggravation.

I had a very high end expensive helmet at one point that I locked to the bike with the D-rings. Came back and found somebody'd simply cut the straps, leaving me with a nice set of D-rings and no helmet. You feel violated.

Same thing happened to one of my riding buddies, left with a lock & short piece of strap with the D-rings. For local RTE's I usually throw on the 52 L Givi top box to toss in my helmet & jacket.

Sure. They're just 1" nylon webbing that is available at any fabric or camping store.

That's why I started a loooong time ago using a coiled up bicycle cable lock through my helmet's eyeport, rather than trusting the D-rings again. Even if I have no boxes on the bike, I can secure two helmets and usually a jacket or two, by passing the cable through a sleeve.

Sorry to hear about your trip. It is shame we have come to this point that we need to carry a cable to lock things up. Like to catch a few of these guys and teach them some manners and a little about Texas justice.

Picked up the Bluetooth first thing this morning all charged up as promised. As my wife had said, we've seen the best and worste in people thru this incident. The bad is obvious, but from the police, to the pizza guy that jumped into action to try to find a loaner helmet, to the dealership that was willing to charge up a unit for some stranger on the phone that hadn't even bought the unit yet, we've witnessed a lot of good.

I'm going to focus on the positive. My wife likes her new helmet and we managed to get in a nice 240 ride today, most of it on the BRP. Life is good.

...and I hope they catch the bastard. :)

The theft sucks, but I'm glad people were helpful.

Finally took a photo last night of using the cable lock. We already had all sorts of stuff in the bags and throwing the cable lock through the grab rail, two helmets, and a jacket is quicker & easier than re-configuring everything. (The 2nd jacket did go in the top box)

Bummer to hear dirt dad. I am glad the local PD is helping out and being good. Any photos of the lid? We find a lot of stolen stuff on craigslist. Post a photo of the helmet, size, and where it was stolen from so we can check CL while you are on the road.

Sorry, sorry bastards! This kind of crap boils my blood. Great approach to the situation, though - not letting it ruin your trip. Glad to hear some good people helped out.
