Well, you can turn the sirens and light off. If I don't think it is correct, I have the right to say so. And if you would like to notify the vendor, that's fine with me. Let's see if he/she, can defend their product.

Cheers
And I'm not saying your wrong nor that you don't have a right to say what you want. I'm just wanting some facts in the matter and playing some Devil's Advocate. It just seems to me that there are claims of activity that may even be criminal without much in the way of facts. AFAICS the vendor deserves the benefit of doubt unless proven otherwise. That's all. ::019::

Ok, after doing some research, I found the guy started selling manuals in 2002. He also belonged to several forums, both car and bike. Sold some parts prior to selling manuals. In 2002 he started by selling out of date manuals for 50.00 then graduated to copies of factory manuals.

This is a quote from a post he made about the manuals that were copied.
"Hi. Was it new or used? This replica is NEW. It's an exact replica of the Fcatory version, red front cover and red back cover. I didn't like the original pages.. much too thin. It tears easily
... "

Also found a person that called him on the copied manuals. Said it was a nice copy with pictures front and back, but it was still a copy and it was illegal.

Now if you want to find more info on the guy, you may wish to do a search yourself.

Cheers

I did and went through 10 pages of positive reviews on the sell.com site. I went through it and didn't notice any complaints. Also I googled the guy and he had a lot of positive comments on the Gixxer forum. I like to respect everyone's intellectual property, just as I would like mine to be respected. I guess I'll find out. If it's an obvious copy, I'll go to Yamahapubs.

It sounds like the seller admits the manuals are copies, even if he uses the term "replica". So the only question is whether he is authorized by Yamaha. I doubt he is simply because I've never heard of Yamaha authorizing any third-party to copy their manuals and if they did, I doubt they'd allow it to be done at a price that undercuts the wholesale price they charge their dealers for the manual. It just doesn't make any sense.

This sort of low-level commercial copyright violation is done all the time. Some companies aggressively pursue these folks; others just don't think it is worth the trouble. It's a "whack a mole" problem - by the time you stop one pirate another ten will rush in to fill the void. And Yamaha may look the other way a bit simply because they don't mind that much to have wider distribution of their technical data.

Like I said earlier, it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, but this doesn't prove it is a duck. Believe what you like.

I would be interested if the copy includes the copyright page.

I just checked my....errr... CD. It's an exact copy complete with copyright page :D I wanted to do this the right way, but my Yamaha dealer quoted me $400.00 USD equivalent for the real thing. Gotta have a manual, but I had to draw the line when the price is so ridiculous. If I come across the legit manual somewhere online, I will still purcase that. I've done PN searches and still come up empty handed. :-\

@protondecay - Me thing thou dost protest too much. It's a blatant copy of the original material. It's obvious from his site, the pictures and the way it's put together. I have a factory manual, bought from the dealer and it's clear the vendor in question has bought one, taken it apart, made very high quality copies of it and is selling those at a price far below the dealer's MSRP.

Chose to support a pirate or not, your call. ::)

I was very tempted to buy my shop manual from this guy. The good comments are nice, but of course people are going to be happy if they get a manual for half price.

Ultimately, I couldn't figure out how this guy could be selling manuals for half price without copyright infringement. Would Yamaha give this guy license to use the copyright and then sell manuals for half what they charge?! Doesn't seem likely...

I bought my manual from Yamaha and feel good knowing I have a legit copy.

In case anyone was wondering about the legitimacy of the service manuals on sell.com... they are unauthorized. I emailed Yamaha publications the link to the manual on sell.com and they confirmed that they are Yamaha's only authorized source.

Thank you so much for informing us about the unauthorized copies and link. We are Yamaha’s only authorized source. I have forwarded this information to our legal department to handle.

Once again thank you,

First, congrats on buying the real Yamaha manual. ::012::
Also thanks for making them aware of the unauthorized seller. The world will never be rid of thieves, but this is one more good effort.

Well I bought a copy of my service manual for a 2005 Yamaha FRJ1300 for $15 at Building 19 3/4 in Norwood, MA in 2008 and it was an original copy, brand new, still in the shrinkwrap. They are a salvage outfit that probably got it from a brankruptcy. So not everyone that offers something for halfprice or less is a thief. I'm glad you contacted Yamaha's vendor and I will buy a copy from Yamahapubs. I don't care to buy rip offs at all and should have had to foresight to check with yamaha myself. Thanks.

It does not sound good. If you are selling a copy of the original manual, take your ass to another forum. Or better yet,
drop dead..

I ordered it from yamahapubs > Crestec or whatever it's called from a link on My Yamaha. When you register at My Yamaha and get your bike registered with them they will provide a link to purchase your service manual. It was $104, but I bit the bullet. ::022::

Good morning, teleubieca. Could you post a bit of information about yourself, where you live, what you're riding, etc. ??? While your offer seemed to be a generous gesture, we have discussed this topic at some length previously, and most of us have concluded that it is unfair to the producers and publishers of these manuals to distribute them electronically, either for profit or for free. It's money out of the pocket of the people who go to great length to produce them. So it is our policy, unwritten I guess, not to do this. I think some members feel more strongly about it than others, but it's still our "policy". Plus, there may or may not be a legal liability issue for the founder of this Forum. He has come out, on principle and not out of fear of legal repercussions, against this activity, and we respect his position on it.

Please give us some info about yourself, and have another go at the Forum.

By the way, if I have misrepresented the tone of this Forum, I encourage any of the other members to speak up. This is my understanding of our "position" on this topic.

In the meantime, I have four feet of snow, had an upset stomach yesterday morning, and my bike is 3,000 km away. Can I get a little sympathy, please? Money is better. ::008:: R.

What teleubieca may be providing is a link to an online service manual. I've sniffed that out as well. It's for the European models. I just stumbled into using an online search engine, but it's not for the US models IIRC
