Extended warranty or not....

I bought my S10 the second week of January 2013. I been debating for a year whether to purchase the extended warranty. I figure I have a few days to buy it before I am SOL. With the reliability of this bike its hard to justify $400 for just in case situation. Anyone used the extended warranty? Is it worth $400...

I realize its more peace of mind than anything else. I guess my biggest concern is on a long trip and having a failure.

Sorry if this is ::002::

I'm grabbing one soon. peace of mind, resale value, potential wallet saver. I think of it as the ultimate stealth farkle. ;)

I have it. I have not used it on the S10. That said, I'd still buy it again. It only takes one good repair to pay for itself. I also had it for the FJR and it did pay for itself on that bike, which wasn't a big problem bike either. 3 cam chain tensioners and some good will from the dealer on a major problem around 100k.

I'll be getting one for that just in case moment. As mentioned, one major repair will pay for the YES a couple times over, hopefully I'll never use it.

Had one on a prior FJR, didn't use it either...but it did help with resale.

Unless you have YES, you can't brag to folks asking about the bike.......Is it reliable?

Should be. It has a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty. Better than an F350 Diesel. :)

Have it, used it once for the headlight harness so it hasn't paid for itself, but I'm still covered for another 40 months. I like the peace of mind and it's a helluva bargain for the coverage...

I'm gonna disagree with the consensus here, I never buy extended warranties, on anything. Buy a reliable vehicle in the first place, you most likely will never need it. Now if I just had to have some vehicle, and I knew the reliability was less than great, maybe I would consider the extra warranty.

To each their own, whatever lets you sleep at night.

I normally don't buy extended warranties as they're typically poor values, but Yamaha doesn't charge very much for YES and you can get some deals which make it seem, at least on the surface, like the odds might be with you that it would pay off. That being said, I also don't like dealing with warranties and do my own service, so the simplicity of knowing that I can do anything I want with respect to mods and service and not have to worry about voiding a warranty I've paid for is nice. As the OP mentioned, it really boils down to whether "peace of mind" is important to you. My motorcycles are recreational toys and if something breaks I can't afford to fix, I can just let it sit until I have the money or time. If it was a vehicle I was dependent on to get to work or make a living, I might feel differently.

I tip more at the local taqueria every month than YES cost for a year. Chump change. Less than one worn out Kenda Big Block. One tank of fuel in the truck. One.......

I rarely buy extended warranties either. But I have never seen a better deal.

I can count the number of extended warranties I've purchased on one hand - the YES simply represented a value quotient that didn't make sense to pass on considering the length of coverage.

Cheap, cheap insurance...plain and simple.

Especially considering the unknowns about long-term reliability on a completely new design, relatively limited production motorcycle at my time of purchase. Just couldn't pass on it...

I have never bought an extended warranty and intend never to do so. I don't want to live my life on the dictates of some presumed disaster in the future. They go laughing all the way to the bank and I, what do I have to gain for giving them my quid? I ride a bike and I know one day it will break down. I will wait for that occasion.

I thought about it long and hard. $400 for 4 more years seems like a great bargain. Then I remembered my experiences when I did have warranty issues with a motorcycle. No way I was going to pay $400 for the aggravation of having the bike in the shop for weeks at a time when I should be riding it. I don't like others touching my vehicles, especially not my motorcycle where my safety is directly involved. If the YES came with a loaner motorcycle during warranty claims I would be all over it.

$400 also buys a lot of parts, and my labor is cheap enough as I enjoy working on the bike generally. At this point, with how many guys have 10's of 1000's of miles on the bike I just don't see many warranty claims. Sure, a few guys have gotten a fork seal here and there, but that is cheap. I do a fork seal for ~$25 and an hour on my bike (I've actually NEVER blown a fork seal, each time I've had a leak the Seal Mate has worked).

If I had $400 to spend on "protection" for my bike, I'd buy a skid plate.

Some potential buyers of a used bike will find the bike more desirable if it has some extended warranty to transfer because they can figure the owner was less reluctant to get repairs done if needed when needed, and they are not buying a bike with hidden or intermittent issues.

For some the left over warranty also gives added value to the bike in their minds.

One question....

Does Yamaha start the factory warranty the date of the sale?? in other worse if I purchased the bike 1/12/2013 I should have until 1/11/2014 to purchase the extended warranty correct??

I ask because I don't want to spend the money ordering a warranty then find out the bike isn't eligible anymore.

What made my buy the warranty is that the headlight is about 300 bucks, the fuel pump is a bit of cash, little odds and ends that can really add up. and labor at my shop is 90 an hour. I am lucky to have a shop that does top notch work, very trustworthy guys. never trust a shop that wont let you stand around and watch while your bike is being done.

It's helped with resale a bit but still no buyers on my bike.

The parts rarely do break but when they do it can cost a lung.

Effectively yes. If the dealer ordered the bike under their own name, it could have started earlier. If it was ordered under your name for the PDP, it should have started the day you picked it up. The dealer can verify this for you and if you attempt to purchase an extended YES warranty with the bike out of the allowable period, it won't go thru, so you're not going to be out any money. I wouldn't wait until the very last minute though, there is no savings in doing that. The YES extended warranty, regardless of when it is purchased, doesn't start until the end of the one year standard warranty.

Yes, it starts the day that the dealer registers it with Yamaha as sold.

Why in Canada the 4 year warranty cost near 1400$ instead of 400$ for you US guys???? ::010:: ::010:: ::010:: ::010::
MSRP for the USA 4 year YES is a lot more than $400 if that makes you feel better. We are just fortunate that we have some dealers that will discount it.
